Book Beginnings + Friday 56: I'm Your Venus (Sylvia Stryker Space Case #2) by Diane Vallere

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice and asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your ereader and share a non-spoilery sentence or two.

This week I'm featuring a fun cozy mystery set in space - I'm Your Venus (Sylvia Stryker Space Case #2) by Diane Vallere.

About the Book
Sylvia Stryker is taking space by storm—and the galaxy is gearing up for adventure as national bestselling author Diane Vallere blasts Sylvia’s Moon Unit to Venus…

When Sylvia Stryker boards Moon Unit 6 as uniform lieutenant, it’s with an eye on the future. After space pirates destroyed her life, the trek to Venus provides a fresh start. But when the winner of the promotional contest designed to hype the trip is found dead outside the uniform ward, sleuthing takes top priority.

The amorous effect of Venus on the already frisky passengers threaten to compromise the investigation—not to mention the victim’s secret relationship with Sylvia’s boss. Forward thinking, back channels, and distractions on the side lead Sylvia on a pulse-pounding probe that exposes a murderer along with the surprising truth about her past.

Book Beginning
Moon Unit 6 was twice the size of the last spaceship the company had in rotation, and, thanks to the wonders of technology, half the weight. At least that's what the promotion catalog claimed. The ship was docked by the boarding station where families gathered. The sweepstakes was a publicity stunt intended to distract the tourist-traveling public from what had happened the last time a Moon Unit promised "the adventure of a lifetime."

Friday 56 (56% on my Kindle)
I released the computer tablet from the wall and handed it back to Daila. "This wasn't my call," I said.

Review: Switchback (Nightshades #2) by Melissa F. Olson

About the Book
The Bureau of Preternatural Investigations returns in the sequel to Melissa F. Olson's Nightshades.

Three weeks after the events of Nightshades, things are finally beginning to settle for the Chicago branch of the BPI, but the brief respite from the horror of the previous few weeks was never destined to last.

The team gets a call from Switch Creek, WI, where a young man has been arrested on suspicion of being a shade.

The suspect is held overnight, pending DNA testing, but seemingly escapes in a terrifying and bloody massacre. But is there more to the jailbreak than a simple quest for freedom?

My Thoughts

I meant to read Switchback a lot sooner, but it somehow kept getting pushed further and further back in my TBR pile. I'm so glad I finally found the time to read it! I loved the first book and this one was just as good. I was afraid I'd be a bit lost when I started it since it'd been a while since I finished Nightshades, but no worries. I dove right in with no trouble. It was an action packed, fast paced quick read. My only complaint was that I wished it had been longer. It ends with a cliffhanger, leaving me very eager for the next book. I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves urban fantasy.

Can't Wait Wednesday: Magnolia Summer (Southern Seasons #1) by Melanie Dickerson

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week I'm featuring Magnolia Summer (Southern Seasons #1) by Melanie Dickerson releasing September 5, 2018.

About the Book
From New York Times Bestselling author Melanie Dickerson comes a story of love, heroism, and secrets so dangerous they could change this sleepy Southern town forever.

Truett’s hometown needed a doctor, so after finishing medical school, he returned to Bethel Springs. Fighting a secret war with a corrupt lawman wasn’t in his plans, but Sheriff Suggs thinks he’s above the law and can lynch anyone who crosses him. When Suggs threatens his childhood friend, Truett dons a cape and hood and rescues him—placing “the Hooded Horseman” in Sheriff Suggs’s crosshairs.

Celia Wilcox arrives in Bethel Springs, Alabama, in June of 1880. She’s come from Nashville to help her sister care for their younger siblings. She hopes only to be on the small farm for the summer, just until her mother recovers from the shock of Celia’s father’s death. She must return to Nashville to fulfill her dream of opening her own dress shop, especially now, to provide for her family.

The lovely Celia catches Truett’s eye, and he finds himself wanting to impress her. But she flatly refuses to flirt with him or to fall for his—if he does say so himself—considerable charm.

Celia’s growing attraction to the young Dr. Beverly terrifies her, and even if she could marry him, which she cannot, what will happen when Sheriff Suggs discovers Truett is the Hooded Horseman? Will Celia be able to prevent the sheriff from carrying out one last lynching?

Why I Need It

I've enjoyed lots of Dickerson's previous books and was excited when I saw that she had a new series coming out. It sounds great and I'm super intrigued by "the Hooded Horseman".

What upcoming release are you excited about?

Review: The Eli Diaries: Volume One

About the Book
What would Jesus be like if he were a teen today?
Who would be his friend? His enemy?
Who would want to kill him?

Books one through seven of the novella series collected in one edition. Each told by one of these characters...

Satan - out to destroy Eli at any cost
Maggie - the all school sleep-around
Peter - the hot-tempered jock with a bad case of foot-in-mouth disease
Tommy - the Eeyore of the group
Martha - the do-gooder Pharisee
Judas - friend, con-artist, and future betrayer

Each character tells their own story as they face the demanding struggles of high school life in today's world...while interacting with a fellow classmate who just happens to be the Son of God.

My Thoughts

The Battle Begins by Bill Myers
POV – Satan
This was super interesting. The way that Satan tries to get into everyone's minds and get them to sin really made me stop and think. It definitely intrigued me and made me eager to read the other stories in this series.

Skin Deep by Melody Carlson
POV – Maggie
Maggie's had a rough life and she's struggling. But then she witnesses Eli doing weird – amazing – things and starts to question all her bad decisions.

A Plan Gone Wrong by Jeff Gerke
POV – Judas
Jude likes to be in charge and “above” everyone else. If he's not in control, well, he's not a happy guy. He has a plan to win over Mary, but things don't go quite the way he had hoped. This was another interesting story. My favorite quote was, “Stop trying to be more than you are. What you are is enough.”

Not Good Enough by Krista McGee

POV – Martha
This has been the best yet. Martha's stressed and takes on way too much. She tries to be perfect which just stresses her out even more. This was a great story that gives a powerful and thought-provoking look at things. It takes a look at Pharisees in this modern world. An awesome read.

Thanks for Nothin' by Shawn Hopkins
POV – Tommy
Tommy's a pessimist, always expecting the worst to happen and, well, things do tend to go awry around him. When he can't remember what happened the night before, he goes on a mad scramble to figure out what actually occurred. This story took me a minute to get into, but it wasn't long before I was hooked and reading it as fast as I could. It ended up being one of my favorites in this collection.

Daily Grind by Melody Carlson
POV – Maggie
This is the second story featuring Maggie as the narrator and I've gotta say, I enjoyed it even better than the first. Maggie's got a new job at the coffee shop and is doing really well with everything, but she still has to deal with the rude and judgmental people who won't let her forget about her “bad reputation”. I've really come to like Maggie a lot and really admire the way she's trying to change and improve herself.

Payback by Tim Shoemaker
POV – Pete
Pete has some anger issues. When the girl he has a crush on is being threatened by an ex, he thinks he's found the perfect way to release his pent up rage. He's gonna find the guy and teach him a lesson. Eli, on the other hand, has a more peaceful solution in mind. This was a great addition to the series. It was fast paced and showcased the wonderful things that can happen when showing mercy to someone. I enjoyed getting to know Pete better.

All in all, I had a great time reading these stories. It deals with a lot of mature subjects in a way that shines a light on the awesome power of the Lord. It didn't sugarcoat things and I appreciated that. I highly recommend it and am excited to read the next installment.

Book Beginnings + Friday 56: Tides of Deception (Lantern Beach Romantic Suspense #1) by Christy Barritt

This week I'm featuring a fantastic romantic suspense - Tides of Deception (Lantern Beach Romantic Suspense #1) by Christy Barritt.

About the Book
Change has come to Lantern Beach: a new police chief, a new season, and . . . a new romance?

Austin Brooks has loved Skye Lavinia from the moment they met, but the walls she keeps around her seem impenetrable. Skye knows Austin is the best thing to ever happen to her. Yet she also knows that if he learns the truth about her past, he’d be a fool not to run.

A chance encounter brings secrets bubbling to the surface, and danger soon follows. Are the life-threatening events plaguing them really accidents . . . or is someone trying to send a deadly message?

With the tides on Lantern Beach come deception and lies. One question remains—who will be swept away as the water shifts? And will it bring the end for Austin and Skye, or merely the beginning?

Book Beginning
"I understand," Austin Brooks muttered into his phone. "You've given me a lot to think about, and I'll wait for a follow-up call."

Friday 56 (57% on my Kindle)
Skye felt like she'd just been run over. And in a way she had - both physically and emotionally. She had no idea sharing her story with Austin would be so draining.

Review: Snowbound with the Best Man by Allie Pleiter

About the Book
Do their matchmaking daughters have the right idea?

A Matrimony Valley novel

Snowed in with the best man at a wedding weekend, florist Kelly Nelson can’t help but notice that the handsome widower seems overwhelmed raising his young daughter. So Kelly is delighted when her own daughter befriends the girl. But when the little matchmakers target Kelly and Bruce with an adorable Valentine’s Day plot, will the reluctant single parents give love a second chance?

My Thoughts

Snowbound with the Best Man is another winner from Allie Pleiter! It's the second book in the Matrimony Valley series, but stands alone great. It's a story full of heart and second chances featuring two little girls set on matchmaking their parents.

Kelly and Bruce have both suffered devastating losses and are doing their very best coping with their grief. But it's hard, so hard. Bruce is numb to everything, feeling like a zombie moving through life. He's isolated himself from God and his church while Kelly's done the opposite and has surrounded herself with God, friends, and her church. They have so much in common, but are complete opposites in many ways too. They're great characters who I loved getting to know and watch grow throughout the story. And their little girls were so adorable.

I enjoyed being back in the charming town of Matrimony Valley. It's such an inviting town full of friendly residents and cute “matrimony” themed businesses. It's the perfect small town setting.

I highly recommend Snowbound with the Best Man to anyone who enjoys sweet, inspirational romances. I can't wait for the next book!

I received a complimentary copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Can't Wait Wednesday: Night and Silence (October Daye #12) by Seanan McGuire

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week I'm featuring Night and Silence (October Daye #12) by Seanan McGuire releasing September 4, 2018.

About the Book
Things are not okay.

In the aftermath of Amandine's latest betrayal, October "Toby" Daye's fragile self-made family is on the verge of coming apart at the seams. Jazz can't sleep, Sylvester doesn't want to see her, and worst of all, Tybalt has withdrawn from her entirely, retreating into the Court of Cats as he tries to recover from his abduction. Toby is floundering, unable to help the people she loves most heal. She needs a distraction. She needs a quest.

What she doesn't need is the abduction of her estranged human daughter, Gillian. What she doesn't need is to be accused of kidnapping her own child by her ex-boyfriend and his new wife, who seems to be harboring secrets of her own. There's no question of whether she'll take the case. The only question is whether she's emotionally prepared to survive it.

Signs of Faerie's involvement are everywhere, and it's going to take all Toby's nerve and all her allies to get her through this web of old secrets, older hatreds, and new deceits. If she can't find Gillian before time runs out, her own child will pay the price. One question remains:

Who in Faerie remembered Gillian existed? And what do they stand to gain? No matter how this ends, Toby's life will never be the same.

Why I Need It
This series is awesome! You'd think after twelve books things would start getting stale, but that is not the case with October Daye. Each book gets better and better and the stakes keep getting higher. I've got this book preordered and plan to drop everything when it arrives.

What upcoming release are you excited about?

Top Ten Tuesday: Authors to Pull You Out of a Reading Slump

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

The topic this week is: Books to Pull You Out of a Reading Slump, but I decided to switch it up a little and list Authors to Pull You Out of a Reading Slump. Here's some authors that help pull me out of a slump. Maybe there's something on this list that would help you out of a reading slump too.

1. Maria V. Snyder - She's my favorite fantasy author. I've lost count of how many times I've read her book Poison Study. Her world building is fantastic and the characters are great too.

2. Seanan McGuire - When I've been in a reading slump and grab one of her stories, the slump is instantly over. She has a wonderful way with words and instantly pulls me into the story, no matter what it's about.

3. Christina Coryell - She writes characters who feel so real, who I wish were my friends. I know when I pick up one of her books, I'll be swept away into the characters lives and lingering there as long as I can.

4. Pepper Basham - I'm sure to have a smile on my face when I finish one of her books. There's always a nice balance of humor, heart, and faith in her stories that always leave me in a good mood.

5. Ronie Kendig - Her books are fast paced and action-packed. There's never a dull moment when I'm reading her books and sometimes that's exactly what I need to get out of a slump.

6. Heather Blake - Nobody does a cozy mystery like Heather Blake! I always become completely absorbed in the mystery, the characters lives, and the setting.

7. Christy Barritt - She's one of my favorite mystery/romantic suspense authors. She's a speedy writer, so I don't have to wait long for her next book. They're always exciting and heart-pounding reads.

8. Sarah Sundin - She's a master at WWII fiction. The amount of research and knowledge she has for the time period is astounding. I always learn something new while reading one of her books. Plus, there's always a powerful message of faith woven into the story that never fails to move me.

9. Jen Turano - When I'm in need of something that'll make me laugh, I'll grab a Jen Turano book. Her characters always find themselves in zany and outrageous situations that leave me laughing so hard.

Are there certain authors who help get you out of a reading slump?

Review: Crime and Poetry (A Magical Bookshop Mystery #1) by Amanda Flower

About the Book
From Amanda Flower—who writes the national bestselling Amish Quilt Shop Mysteries as Isabella Alan—comes the first in the new Magical Bookshop Mystery series.

Rushing home to sit by her ailing grandmother’s bedside, Violet Waverly is shocked to find Grandma Daisy the picture of perfect health. Violet doesn’t need to read between the lines: her grandma wants Violet back home and working in her magical store, Charming Books. It’s where the perfect book tends to fly off the shelf and pick you...

Violet has every intention to hightail it back to Chicago, but then a dead man is discovered clutching a volume of Emily Dickinson’s poems from Grandma Daisy’s shop. The victim is Benedict Raisin, who recently put Grandma Daisy in his will, making her a prime suspect. Now, with the help of a tuxedo cat named Emerson, Violet will have to find a killer to keep Grandma from getting booked for good...

My Thoughts

I'm definitely adding Crime and Poetry to my list of favorite cozy mysteries. It was a delightful read full of a cast of quirky characters set in the charming town of Cascade Springs.

The magical bookshop was so much fun and such a neat idea. Books really are magic! The shop was host to a couple of animal friends that I completely adored, Faulkner the talking crow and a cat named Emerson.

The mystery was great and even though I figured out 'whodunit', the motive was still a conundrum until the reveal.

Crime and Poetry is a cozy mystery I'd recommend to book lovers everywhere. I can't wait to start book two, Prose and Cons.

Review: A Dangerous Deception by Debra E. Marvin

About the Book
Jerome, Arizona Territory, 1899
When Andromeda Barr left her colorful past behind in pursuit of a normal—albeit solo—life, she didn’t exactly settle for the mundane. Performing is in her blood, and right now she has to believe she’s lying for all the right reasons—justice for the excluded, the overlooked of society—a debt she owes to the two unusual people who raised her.

Pinkerton Agent Connell O’Brien is on the trail of a wanted murderer holed up in ‘the wickedest town in the west.’ Hiding his identity is part of the job, but when he meets the surprising Miss Barrington, he begins to wonder how many secrets are too many.

Two close calls with disaster seem to suggest it’s time they both stop running from the guilt of the past and let mercy catch up, but will these two solo acts join forces before the danger of discovery becomes a matter of life or death?

My Thoughts

I really enjoy books that feature the Pinkertons. A Dangerous Deception has not one, but TWO Pinkerton agents! I couldn't wait to read it! Once I started it, I didn't want to stop! It was fast paced and had me clicking through the pages as fast as I could. It was an exciting and fun read filled with danger, intrigue, and a great message of faith.

I loved the name Andromeda! It's so unique and completely fit the character. She's full of sass and spunk and was so much fun to read about. Connell was the perfect guy for her.

The circus terms and definitions at the beginning of each chapter were really interesting and I learned lots of new things from them.

A Dangerous Deception is my favorite story from Debra Marvin yet! I can't recommend it highly enough!

Can't Wait Wednesday: Changeling (Sorcery and Society #1) by Molly Harper

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week I'm featuring Changeling (Sorcery and Society #1) by Molly Harper releasing August 22, 2018.

About the Book
Sorcery and Society Book 1

“Witty and classic, Changeling had everything I wanted from a coming of age story: friendship, scandal, and a heroine learning to flex her magical muscles. If you liked Harry Potter, you will love CHANGELING!” —Kristen Simmons, critically acclaimed author of the Article 5 series

If 14-year-old Cassandra Reed makes it through her first day at Miss Castwell’s Institute for the Magical Instruction of Young Ladies without anyone discovering her secret, maybe, just maybe, she’ll let herself believe that she really does belong at Miss Castwell’s.

Except Cassandra Reed’s real name is Sarah Smith and up until now, she lived her whole life in the Warren, serving a magical family, the Winters, as all non-magical “Snipes” are bound by magical Guardian law to do. That is, until one day, Sarah accidentally levitates Mrs. Winter’s favorite vase in the parlor...

But Snipes aren’t supposed to have magical powers…and the existence of a magical Snipe threatens the world order dictated during the Guardians’ Restoration years ago. If she wants to keep her family safe and protect her own skin, Sarah must figure out how to fit into posh Guardian society, master her newfound magical powers and discover the truth about how an ordinary girl can become magical.

“Molly Harper’s Changeling is masterful fantasy—a spunky Cinderella story with a heroine who’s equal parts compassion, determination, and pure magical delight.” —Rachel Vincent, author of the Soul Screamers series and The Stars Never Rise

**Includes eight original illustrations!**

Why I Need It
Molly Harper's venturing into Young Adult fiction and I couldn't be more excited! I love her paranormal romances, but I'm not gonna lie, I do get a bit uncomfortable reading all those steamy scenes. So it'll be nice to see her take on a story for a younger audience that won't leave me blushing, lol.

What upcoming release are you excited about?

Review: Sparrow Hill Road (Ghost Roads #1) by Seanan McGuire

About the Book
Rose Marshall died in 1952 in Buckley Township, Michigan, run off the road by a man named Bobby Cross—a man who had sold his soul to live forever, and intended to use her death to pay the price of his immortality. Trouble was, he didn’t ask Rose what she thought of the idea.

It’s been more than sixty years since that night, and she’s still sixteen, and she’s still running.

They have names for her all over the country: the Girl in the Diner. The Phantom Prom Date. The Girl in the Green Silk Gown. Mostly she just goes by “Rose,” a hitchhiking ghost girl with her thumb out and her eyes fixed on the horizon, trying to outrace a man who never sleeps, never stops, and never gives up on the idea of claiming what’s his. She’s the angel of the overpass, she’s the darling of the truck stops, and she’s going to figure out a way to win her freedom. After all, it’s not like it can kill her.

You can’t  kill what’s already dead.

My Thoughts

It's been a few years since I first read Sparrow Hill Road, so I figured I should reread it to refresh my memory before starting the sequel, The Girl in the Green Silk Gown. I loved it the first time and loved it even more this second go around.

It's a little spooky, but not too bad. I'm not usually a fan of scary stories, but I found this one to be just right, I think. It was a bit melancholy at times, but it's narrated by a ghost who died too young, at the age of sixteen, so that's to be expected. Though there was also a lot of humor, too. So that was nice.

Rose is an instantly likable character. She's seen many things and traveled many roads through many decades often known as “the Ghost of Sparrow Hill Road, “the Girl at the Diner”, and “the Phantom Prom Date”, just to name a few. She's not someone to be messed with. She's grown to be fierce, but she's also just about the most helpful and honorable ghost you'll ever meet.

It was great to travel the ghost roads with Rose once again and I'm very eager to find out what happens next in The Girl in the Green Silk Gown.

Review: Jane By the Book by Pepper Basham

About the Book
Four years ago, Jane Warwick escaped the shame and heartbreak of being jilted at the altar by becoming a housekeeper at the secluded Inn at Simeon Ridge. Predictable and quiet, the inn helps Jane find a place to heal and celebrates her strengths, where she is promoted to head housekeeper. But an unexpected visit to Bath, England, upsets Jane's plans and sends her out of her comfort zone, directly into the harrowing path of historical detective author, Titus Stewart.

The only plans Titus sticks to are family holidays and the ones that send him careening into his story worlds, but when an uptight and nervous innkeeper stumbles into his life - and his latest novel - nonfiction begins to take on a much more interesting gleam.

As the unlikely pair delve into the mystery behind a one-hundred-and-fifty-year-old letter, will they both uncover a romance that stands the test of time?

My Thoughts

Jane by the Book is my new favorite story from Pepper Basham. I've loved every one of her books that I've read, but this one tops them all.

I'd been hearing about Titus and wondered if he was truly as terrific as everyone said. Well, let me tell ya', he most certainly is! Oh my! He's so wonderfully weird and likable and oh so swoonworthy. He's a genuinely great guy and my new favorite leading man.

I loved the faith element in this story. It was so great! There's also an intriguing mystery surrounding Jane's ancestral namesake that I really enjoyed.

I loved every single second of this feel-good romance and can't recommend it highly enough! It's a story that's sure to leave a big smile on your face!

Can't Wait Wednesday: A Touch of Gold by Annie Sullivan

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week I'm featuring A Touch of Gold by Annie Sullivan releasing August 14, 2018.

About the Book
Gold is wealth. Wealth is power. Power is a curse.

King Midas once had the ability to turn all he touched into gold. But after his gift—or curse—almost killed his daughter, Midas relinquished The Touch forever. Ten years later, Princess Kora still bears the consequences of her father’s wish: her skin shines golden, rumors follow her everywhere she goes, and she harbors secret powers that are getting harder to hide.

Kora spends her days locked in the palace, concealed behind gloves and veils, trying to ignore the stares and gossip of courtiers. It isn’t until a charming young duke arrives that Kora realizes there may be someone out there who doesn’t fear her or her curse. But their courtship is disrupted when a thief steals precious items from the kingdom, leaving the treasury depleted and King Midas vulnerable. Thanks to her unique ability to sense gold, Kora is the only one who can track the thief down. As she sails off on her quest, Kora learns that not everything is what it seems—not thieves, not pirates, and not even curses. She quickly discovers that gold—and the power it brings—is more dangerous than she’d ever believed.

Midas learned his lesson at a price. What will Kora’s journey cost?

From author Annie Sullivan comes A Touch of Gold, the untold story of the daughter King Midas turned to gold, perfect for fans of Cinder and The Wrath and the Dawn.

Release Day Review: To Catch a Witch: A Wishcraft Mystery by Heather Blake

About the Book
National bestselling author Heather Blake is back with wishcrafter Darcy Merriweather in her eighth magical Wishcraft mystery adventure.

Wishcrafter Darcy Merriweather might be a witch with the ability to grant wishes for others, but wishing isn’t going to help her catch a killer…

When wishcrafter Darcy Merriweather’s personal concierge company is hired by elite runner Abby Stillwell to organize the Wicked Mad Dash, a competition that takes place in the Enchanted Village, Darcy is more than willing to help her friend. As blizzard conditions rage on the morning of the race, Darcy’s main concern is the terrible weather—until Abby goes missing…and is later found dead, buried in the snow.

As Darcy investigates her friend’s untimely death, she learns that she didn’t really know Abby well at all. And those closest to the woman—her secret fiancĂ©, her roommate, her ex-boyfriend, and her co-workers at Balefire Sports—seem to have plenty to hide too. As Darcy digs deeper, she uncovers complicated relationships, a possible embezzlement scheme, and allegations of cheating against a top athlete.

Just when Darcy is convinced she’s hit a dead end in the case, a startling burglary and the hunt for Abby’s elusive ex send Darcy down a dark, dangerous trail. It will take the help from friends, family, and a little bit of magic for Darcy to stop a stone-cold killer from striking again.

My Thoughts

I think I actually squealed with delight when I first saw To Catch a Witch. I'm a massive fan of the Wishcraft Mystery series (it's the best cozy series out there) and I was ecstatic to find out there was a new one coming out!

Even though it's been a couple of years since the previous book was released, I was able to slide right into the story, as if no time at all had passed. It felt like coming home. It was such a great feeling and it was so wonderful visiting the Enchanted Village again and catching up with all the quirky residents.

The mystery was excellent and kept me guessing until the end. This might sound weird, but I love it when I can't solve the mystery beforehand. In To Catch a Witch, there were many viable suspects and when I'd think I had it all figured out, something new would come up that had me questioning everything. I thought I'd solved it, but nope, not even close.

To Catch a Witch is an awesome addition to the series. It's a mystery full of heart and magic. I was sad to reach the end, but am so excited for what's to come! I highly, highly recommend this book to anyone who loves cozy mysteries.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Book Beginnings + Friday 56: Thirst of Steel (The Tox Files #3) by Ronie Kendig

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice and asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your ereader and share a non-spoilery sentence or two.

This week I'm featuring the conclusion to The Tox Files - Thirst of Steel by Ronie Kendig. I was lucky enough to read an early copy of the book (here's my review) and OH MY GOODNESS - what an epic ending to an amazing series! This is Kendig at her finest. There were so many twist and turns and shocks... and a few tears. And it features an intriguing archaeological mystery surrounding the sword of Goliath. It's one of the best books I've read this year.

About the Book
Dismantled centuries ago, the sword of Goliath is still rumored to thirst for its enemies' blood. Cole "Tox" Russell only wants to begin his life with Haven Cortes, but he must first complete a final mission: retrieve that sword and destroy the deadly Arrow & Flame Order.

The AFO, however, is determined to claim the sword. Wielding their father's life over Tzivia and Ram Khalon, they threaten to expose Ram's long-held and dangerous secret while demanding Tzivia locate the sword. With the Wraith team slowly being torn apart, things only worsen when Mercy Maddox, a new operative, emerges with the stunning news that the sword is tied to both Ram's secret and a string of unsolved serial murders.

Tox, Ram, and the others are forced to set aside fear and anger to focus only on the enemy. No matter the cost, Wraith must stop or take the enemy down with them.

Book Beginning (From Chapter One)
Beside Joseph Cathey, the air stirred, and he released a long, grieved breath. "Could you not come during a less daunting part?" he muttered as he tugged down his reading glasses and looked up at his visitor. "And has anyone mentioned to you that it is impolite to appear twenty years younger than a man you outnumber by centuries?"

Friday 56 (56% on my Kindle)
The dead tone of a severed connection rang in her ear. Haven stared at the phone, stunned.

Review: Called to Protect (Blue Justice #2) by Lynette Eason

About the Book
For the past year, Chloe St. John has been working as a K-9 cop with her German shepherd partner, Hank. After being dumped by her fiance for another woman, Chloe has decided that Hank is just about the only male she likes. She's over the whole romance thing and focuses her attention on doing her job. Because a serious case of human trafficking with connections to her missing cousin just landed in her lap.

When US Marshall Blake MacCallum's daughter goes missing, he's ordered to kill the judge he's protecting and tell no one about his daughter's disappearance or she will die. Blake races against the clock to rescue his daughter while Chloe and Hank are asked to be a part of the task force assembled to bring down the traffickers. Chloe finds herself attracted to the silent, suffering man, but thanks to her previous bad judgment, she wonders if she can trust him. And can Blake trust himself around this firecracker of a woman?

Bestselling author Lynette Eason warns readers to buckle in for a fast and furious ride that will have their hearts pumping from the very start.

My Thoughts

I loved Oath of Honor, the first book in this series, and couldn't wait to dive into the second one. I didn't know if it could possibly be as good as the first one, but I had no need to worry. It definitely is! It's an intense nail-biter from the very first page. It had my anxiety high and my heart racing.

Dealing with the serious topic of human trafficking, Called to Protect is a compelling, heart wrenching, and hard to put down read. It's disturbing to think that what happens in this book is actually happening all over the world right now. It wasn't always an easy read, but it's an important one. I appreciate books that shine a light on these heinous crimes.

One of my favorite aspects of this story was the relationship between Chloe and her K-9 partner Hank. The amount of trust they had in each other was awesome. It just reiterated how amazing those dogs are.

It was great being back with the St. John family and even though this is book two in the series, it stands alone just fine. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys heart-pounding suspense. I can't wait for the next one!
