This week I'm featuring Kings of Dawn & Dusk (Chronicles of Twinsbane Book 2) by Mariposa Aristeo.

SYNOPSIS
Not even their connection can stop fate.

The giant cracks fissuring the kingdom of Twinsbane threaten to divide the world into eternal day and night. Many believe the rift is a divine sign to sever the last connection between every twin, but the truth is far darker than anyone could imagine.

With no one left to trust, King Daccias turns to his twin, Waruu, in hopes of vanquishing the Separator's power over the land. Daccias seeks to uncover the lost history of the first two kings and resurrect the connection doubles once shared. But regaining that ancient bond may not be as easy as it seems, especially when the only way to fix his fractured world is to face the hidden nightmares from his childhood.

Joining forces with Daccias, Waruu is torn between his devotion to his family and the strange and annoying connection that allows him to feel Daccias's thoughts and emotions. But Waruu is willing to do anything to save what's left of his broken family—even if it means turning against the man who raised him.

To restore the kingdom and right the wrongs of the past, both boys must be willing to sacrifice the one person who has become like a brother—each other.

Review: The Burning Tree by Helen Dent

SYNOPSIS
There’s a secret growing in the woods.

In Ellie Caster’s town of Bishop’s Gap, the Casters and the powerful Levy family have been feuding for generations. The families share just one thing in common—they both dread the mark, a scorch that appears at random on their doors, bringing a curse from the Burning Tree.

When the mark hits Ellie’s door, her sister Jean falls into a coma. Ellie knows the Burning Tree is to blame, and desperate to save her sister, she braves the forbidden woods to confront it. But this choice ignites a chain of unintended consequences, forcing her to work with her nemesis, Charlotte Levy.

Together, they must complete an impossible task, uncover the ancient secret of Bishop’s Gap, and end the curse before time runs out for their entire town.

MY THOUGHTS

Y’all! This book was so good! The premise sounded awesome, but the book itself exceeded all of my expectations. It had all the haunting and atmospheric vibes I love. It’s the perfect spooky season read.

The intrigue surrounding the tree and the mystery of what was going to happen next made for a really exciting read. It was a race against time to fix things, and the suspense just kept building. I finished this book in record time. I couldn’t read it fast enough. It reminded me a bit of some older YA books, but it was also very unique in its own way. I loved it and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys lightly spooky YA books.

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Review: Karabos (The Timebound Duology Book 1) by Lyndsey Lewellen

SYNOPSIS
Enter a dangerous game of magic beetles, buried secrets, and shifting time.

Winslet Nubek knows bugs better than she knows people. The sixteen-year-old, homeschooled entomologist is determined to earn her place among the ancient and dangerous ranks of magical insect hunters. With her father’s failing mines pushing them toward bankruptcy, winning the Tournament of Scarabs becomes her only shot at securing her dream and saving her family from ruin. But when she touches a forbidden time scarab before the competition begins, she’s left with a mark she can’t explain and trips into the past she can’t control. Forced to hide her mistake, Winslet enters the tournament with a growing fear of being discovered. As her secrets grow, so do her slips through time.

Rafe Stormholt charts maps like other people write diaries, but his own future isn’t his to navigate. He needs the tournament prize to keep his grandfather’s company out of treacherous hands. After the preliminaries go awry, Rafe ends up on a team of academic misfits, including the bug girl he’s already judged as a liability. But when he’s dragged into the past alongside her, Rafe uncovers truths that shatter the faith his family has held for generations.

Bound by a time-slipping curse, Winslet and Rafe must navigate the tournament’s perilous trials while unraveling a conspiracy buried centuries deep. As enemies close in and the past begins to bleed into the present, they’ll have to decide what they’re really fighting for and what they’re willing to lose to win.

MY THOUGHTS

Karabos was such a unique, compelling, and unputdownable read. I loved it so much! It was fast-paced and has one of the best opening lines I’ve read in a while. I was hooked immediately.

The worldbuilding was fantastic. It felt familiar yet was unique too. It was never overwhelming, which I appreciated. I was able to slip right in and feel at home. I loved the Indiana Jones and Mummy vibes.

I really liked Winslet and Rafe. They had a bit of a grumpy-sunshine thing going on, which was a lot of fun. I loved seeing them get to know each other and understand each other better. I thought it was really cool that Winslet was homeschooled. I loved seeing her supportive family. I also really liked Rafe and Winslet’s teammates. They were a great group.

I really appreciated seeing how strong Winslet’s faith was in the face of so much adversity. It was really inspiring! It had me thinking about what I would do in her situation.

This book took some turns that I didn’t see coming, and with that ending, I’m so looking forward to the next installment! It can’t come out soon enough. I’ve read some really great books this year and this one is near the top. I can’t say enough good things about it. I highly, highly recommend it!

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Review: The Secrets of Everlight (Shattered Kingdoms Book 1) by Julie Hall

SYNOPSIS
A thief turned spy must unravel an assassination plot against the fae prince by disguising herself as a princess competing for his heart in this entrancing romantasy by USA Today bestselling author Julie Hall.

For nineteen years, Rowan has fought to survive: first on the streets scavenging for scraps, then bound by a decade-long contract to a corrupt master. She longs for freedom but spends her days stealing from the highborn to pay off her servitude.

When a mysterious fae buys her contract, Rowan seizes her chance to escape. But her freedom comes at a price: she must uncover the assassin targeting Prince Dryden of the Ember Kingdom. To do so, she will pose as a princess among the royals competing for his hand in marriage.

Thrust into a world of silks and finery, Rowan has just weeks to master her role while hunting a killer hidden in plain sight. Eavesdropping and sneaking through gilded halls may come naturally, but the bonds she forms with the other princesses—and Dryden’s growing interest in her—are complications that threaten to unravel everything.

As whispers of danger beyond the kingdom rise, Rowan realizes the stakes are far greater than she imagined. And every stolen glance with the prince pulls her closer to a desire that could cost her not only her future but the kingdom itself.

MY THOUGHTS

I’m a big fan of Julie Hall’s Life After series, so when I first heard about this book, I was really excited. And, I’ve gotta say, I enjoyed it! I was invested right from the start and couldn’t read fast enough.

Rowan was a sympathetic character. I was fully in her corner and rooting her on. She was thrown into a situation that was so foreign to her, but I thought she adapted well. I liked seeing the growth she experienced from beginning to end. I really liked Neo. The chemistry between him and Rowan was off the charts!

I don’t want to say too much because of spoilers, but there was something that I think was supposed to be a shocking reveal, but it was actually really obvious. And it kinda made Rowan seem a bit clueless since she didn’t figure it out, which did not fit her character at all. But other than that, this was an enjoyable read. Well, except for that ending! I need the next book ASAP!

I received a copy of this book via NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Review: Elle's Magical Shoes (The Magical Things Collection Book 1) by Carla Reighard

SYNOPSIS
Fairies.
Foster kids.
One box full of magical shoes.

Eleven-year-old Elle has two things keeping her going in her Colorado foster home: her vivid imagination and an unshakable belief that her missing family will return. She just didn't expect her imagination to crash through her bedroom window in the form of a blue-haired fairy named Florena.

Suddenly, Elle’s stories are real, and she is handed an impossible task: give away a box of magical footwear, one life-changing pair at a time, to the people around her—including her worst enemy. It's a test to prove to a bitter fairy queen that humans are capable of generosity. If Elle succeeds, she wins a mysterious prize. But when the queen breaks her promise, Elle must journey directly into the heart of the secret fairy kingdom. To save everyone she loves, Elle will have to face a centuries-old grief head-on before both worlds tear apart

MY THOUGHTS

I absolutely adored this book! It was such a sweet and encouraging read. So imaginative too. It’s the perfect read for young girls and their parents too!

Elle was an endearing character. I liked seeing her resiliency and imagination. And I loved seeing the growth she experienced. She faced a sometimes daunting task with the shoes, but I thought she handled it all very well.

I loved that even though this story has fantasy elements, the characters also believed in God. Despite some of the serious subjects that were discussed, it was all handled with care. I appreciated all the life lessons that were woven into the story too. I can’t say enough good things about it and am really looking forward to the next book!

Review: Once Upon A Bear (The Galamere Chronicles) by Gabrielle Landi

SYNOPSIS
An illegal herbwitch, a man turned bear, and the curse keeping them apart.

Guinevere has spent years hiding her illegal magic, healing on the sly with enhanced salves and tonics. Life in her tiny cottage making potions by firelight is quiet and lonely, but it keeps her safe…even if it’s hard to buy food sometimes.

Gideon Rendon is tired of being a bear, but with silence woven into his curse and anyone who sees him trying to kill him, he’s run out of hope. When Guinevere discovers his secret, he begins to feel hope for the first time in years–but the curse is taking over, and he’s spending more and more time as a bear.

As Guinevere stitches his wounds, helps with his brother’s injury, and attempts to break his curse before he loses his humanity, the line between healer and patient begins to blur. But with Gideon’s noble family and Guinevere’s dangerous secret between them, falling in love might be a risk neither of them can afford.

Once Upon A Bear is a cozy fantasy romance inspired by the Goldilocks fairy tale, full of grumpy sunshine vibes and wound tending, and the fifth book in the Galamere Chronicles. Each standalone, young adult romance is a clean and wholesome retelling of a beloved story or fairytale, with the swoon-worthy sweet romance of a Hallmark movie, the wholesome and heartwarming feeling of cozy fantasy, and the comfort of a found family of friends, with a sprinkling of danger and a dash of magic.

While Once Upon A Bear is the fifth book in the Galamere Chronicles series, each couple has their own romance with a happily ever after that can be read in any order.

MY THOUGHTS

Once Upon a Bear was another sweet and cozy addition to this series! Don’t worry if you haven’t read any of the other books yet, this stands alone just fine. It’s my favorite book from Gabrielle Landi yet.

Guinevere and Gideon were wonderful characters. I loved the grumpy sunshine vibe between them. I liked seeing Guinevere grow in her confidence and skills. I really felt for Gideon with his curse. I was really hoping they’d find a cure for it.

This story was a really fun Goldilocks retelling. I don’t see that story retold often, so I loved that. It was fun seeing the callbacks to the original tale, but I also liked how unique it was too. If you’re a fan of sweet fairytale retellings, don’t hesitate to pick up a copy! You’ll love it!

Review: Galinda: A Charmed Childhood by Gregory Maguire

SYNOPSIS
#1 New York Times bestselling author of Wicked Gregory Maguire shares the eagerly awaited origin story of Galinda, the pink-clad, effervescent, and popular favorite character in this sister volume to Elphie.

Who was Glinda the Good Witch before she floated down in her bubble to greet Dorothy? Who was Glinda before she became Elphaba Thropp’s magnetic and popular roommate at Shiz University?

Well, before then, she was Galinda. With a “ga.”

The youngest of four children in a high-born family down on their luck, Galinda is both pampered and ignored. Her natural grace promises to elevate her in the district dance competitions—but these efforts distract her from seeing the growing resentments of local merchants who disapprove of her family’s business strategies. Enmired in the self-satisfactions and unnamed timidities of childhood, Galinda finds in herself neither canniness nor the need to cultivate it. However, as her father deftly pivots around the snares and nets laid for him by his competitors, Galinda begins to dance toward a life that might lift her above her proud, if hardscrabble, childhood.

Galinda reveals the girl behind the bubbly, shallow cliché—offering fans of Wicked their first richer glimpse into the life of a beloved and iconic character.

MY THOUGHTS

I had mixed feelings when I read Elphie last year. I think my expectations were just a little off. So I went into this book with different expectations, and I ended up enjoying it quite a bit.

I liked getting to know more about Galinda and seeing how she became who she was. This book explained so much. It was really interesting getting to know her family too. I will say that I didn’t enjoy the parts of the book that focused more on Ham, one of Galinda’s brothers, quite as much. But, again, it explained a lot.

This book was slower paced. Nothing all that exciting happened. It was more slice of life than anything. But I couldn’t put it down. I was completely hooked. I really enjoyed my time reading it. I recommend it to anyone who has read Wicked.

Note: This book does contain some strong language.

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Review: The Sisters Grimm by Merrie Destefano

SYNOPSIS
Descended from the Brothers Grimm. Hunted by an evil regime. Their story was never just a fairytale.

When her sister is gravely injured during a rescue attempt, Ivy Grimm is forced to team up with River, a disowned Fae prince, to save children trapped in a dark fairytale world. But their mission quickly turns into something far more dangerous.

With a rising rebellion, a ruthless enemy closing in, and a love neither of them expected, Ivy must decide how far she’s willing to go to rewrite this story’s ending.

With echoes of The Nightingale, Nazi oppression, and Grimm’s Fairytales, The Sisters Grimm is a romantasy of courage, hope, and the fight to survive—even when the darkness seems endless.

The Sisters Grimm is available to back on Kickstarter now!

MY THOUGHTS

The Sisters Grimm is Merrie Destefano at her finest. I’ve loved everything I’ve read by her, but this is a new favorite. I know I’m going to want to read it again and again. The premise was great, and the world-building was stunning. So rich and immersive. There was such a grand feel to the whole story.

I loved Ivy and River so much. They were wonderful characters who were easy to root for. I loved that we got both of their POVs.

I enjoyed seeing the supportive and sisterly bond between Ivy and Sparrow. I thought the whole cast of characters was great. It was very interesting to see some of the classic fairytale characters in a new way.

I didn't want this book to end. I didn’t want to say goodbye to these characters or this storyworld. It sucked me in and still hasn’t let go. I can’t say enough good things about it. I highly, highly recommend it!

Review: Vigilante Sasquatch by Frank L. Cole

SYNOPSIS
Fourteen-year-old Ben Ostman’s lack of respect for authority has gotten out of hand, and now he is one mistake away from landing in juvenile detention. Having run out of options, Ben’s mother turns to her brother-in-law for help, leaving Ben no other choice but to spend his summer on his estranged Uncle Garth’s Mississippi farmhouse.

Right from the beginning, Ben and Garth don’t exactly hit it off and it doesn’t take Ben long to discover there is something not right on his uncle’s property. Aside from the manual labor Ben is forced to do around the house, Garth often disappears for days on end. And then there’s the mysterious music Ben hears every night coming from deep in the forest.

When he accidentally stumbles upon his uncle’s gathering of heavily armed teenagers in the woods, Ben is plunged headfirst into the world of the bizarre. Uncle Garth is keeping more than a few secrets. Not only does he work for a shady organization known as the Department of Wildlife Phenomenon, but he spends his days hunting down violent, mutated beasts with the help of an unusual partner named Sid—an eight-foot tall, double-barrel shotgun toting sasquatch with a flair for plucking the banjo.

Reluctantly, Garth allows Ben to tag along on the D.W.P.’s dangerous missions. The work is risky and difficult, and Bigfoot may be the most unpredictable of them all. As Ben develops new friendships with the likes of Dacia and Drubber, he finds himself totally immersed in the D.W.P.’s exploits, and he begins to unravel the mysteries of the forest. Sid isn’t all that he seems and, for that matter, neither is his Uncle Garth.

MY THOUGHTS

This book looks like it's out of print now, but I checked it out with Kindle Unlimited a while ago and finally got around to reading it. It was a lot of fun! Ben's been getting into a lot of trouble lately, so instead of getting sent to juvenile detention, he's sent to his uncle's farm. It was definitely out of his comfort zone, to say the least, but it ended up being a very interesting trip.

It took me a few chapters to really get into the book, but that could've been because of the constant interruptions I experienced. But once I had a long stretch of uninterrupted reading time, I really got into it and ended up enjoying it.

Ben was not likable in the beginning. He was an entitled troublemaker with a chip on his shoulder, but I really liked seeing his character growth. By the end of the story, he had really changed and grown up quite a bit. I loved Sid, though. He was such an awesome character!

While this story was a lot of fun, things got pretty intense in the second half. Things took a turn in a way that I wasn't expecting. It was a definite page-turner! If you're a fan of middle-grade fantasy and can find a copy of this book, I definitely recommend it! I really enjoyed it!

Review: Splintered Life (Shattered World Book 2) by W.R. Gingell

SYNOPSIS
The world isn’t the same as it was yesterday. In fact, Viv is no longer sure that she is the same as she was yesterday. She can do something she never knew was possible—and Luca tried to kill her, just like Jasper said he would if she let him get too close.

At the teahouse, it’s business as usual, however: tentacles in the top floor, an invasion of not-quite-real-but-nevertheless-terrifying spiders...and a new murderer to catch, of course. Someone is trying to make sure a Greek-Australian couple never makes it to the altar, and it's not just perfume they're sneaking into the bride's room.

But Luca isn’t talking to Viv; not since she stopped him from escaping. That shouldn’t be surprising—and the last thing Viv should be doing is trying to talk to him more than she has to—but there’s another murderer on the loose, and they’re going to need Luca’s help to catch him.

Life was already hard, but now Viv has to somehow stop the wilder side of that life from spilling over into her normal life. Her human life. But if the two halves begin to split apart, which should she try to hold onto?

MY THOUGHTS

I started reading this book immediately after finishing the first one. I can't get enough of these characters, the story, and the worlds. I enjoyed this story just as much as the first one.

It picks up right after the events of the previous book. I was hooked! I loved the cozy mystery vibes and enjoyed seeing Viv come into her own as she grappled with the new otherworldly aspects of her life. Luca is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters I've read about in recent memory. Yes, he's unhinged, but I can't get enough of him.

I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys twisty urban fantasy. Be sure to start at the beginning because this does not stand alone. I can't wait to start book three!

Review: Muse & Malice (Echoes of Olympus) by Anna Hawke

SYNOPSIS
No one worships the God of the Dead.

Feared by mortals and mistrusted by his own family, Hades has ruled the Underworld alone for millennia. When a prophecy ties the fate of the pantheon to a mortal woman, he has no choice but to bring her into his realm—and keep her close.

Persephone enters the Underworld with a secret purpose: steal Hades’ keyring and reclaim the son she lost. She expects a cold and merciless god. Instead, she finds a man worth protecting. If Persephone’s deception is exposed, it may destroy more than their fragile bond.

It may bring down the gods.

Echoes of Olympus is a non-explicit shared world of dark fantasy and paranormal romance reimagining classic Greek myths through shadow and desire. Each story follows different myths, different couples, and a different descent into danger—where gods and mortals collide.

MY THOUGHTS

What a fantastic conclusion to this series! I loved it so much! This story was very fast-paced and had me completely invested from beginning to end.

I was surprised by just how much I ended up liking Hades. He was completely different than I expected, which I loved! I felt for Persephone right off the bat. She was grieving her son and would do anything to get him back, even take on the god of the Underworld. I was so curious to see how that would turn out!

This was my favorite of the series. I’m sad it’s over, but what a wonderful trilogy! I can’t say enough good things about it and highly recommend it!

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. I'm also linking up with Carrie at Reading is My Superpower for First Line Friday. Friday 56 asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your ereader and share a non-spoilery sentence or two. It was started by Freda at Freda's Voice, but Anne over at My Head is Full of Books has taken over for the time being.

This week I'm featuring Splintered Life (Shattered World Book 2) by W.R. Gingell. I'm enjoying this series so much! This second installment is just as good as the first!

Book Beginnings / First Line Friday
There was a tideline in the lunch room. Viv saw it, hazily. She might, she thought, have been able to see it better if the room wasn't sideways. She followed the tideline with her eyes, aware of the scent of salt and seaweed, and was mildly curious that she didn't seem to find either the scent or the tideline odd.

Friday 56
Maybe she should have expected to see that the bins had already been put away when she arrived home, but somehow, Viv hadn't. A searing moment of utter exasperation burnt through her chest, leaving her cold and dizzy and angry in its wake.

Can't Wait Wednesday: The Stargazers by Ava Lauren Grayson

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week I'm featuring The Stargazers by Ava Lauren Grayson releasing September 15.

SYNOPSIS
THE ASTRONAUT. Sixteen-year-old blue-haired JULIA MASTROFF fears nothing, except not living up to the memory of her heroic astronaut father.

THE MECHANIC. KY NOLAN wants nothing more than to escape his criminal past, but to do that, he has to betray the one he loves most.

THE AEROSPACE ENGINEER. Daughter of a decorated military officer, NATALIE DÍAZ, might be a genius when it comes to engineering, but even better, she’s a survivor.

THE ASTRONOMER. MILO FRY has one goal in life…okay maybe two: 1) to stay alive, and 2) to become the greatest young scientist of his time. From the safety of Earth.

Attending an elite NASA training program, the American Space Academy, Julia Mastroff, Ky Nolan, Natalie Díaz, and Milo Fry are invited to be the newest members of The Stargazers Project, a top secret program that creates working teenage astronauts.

On a test mission, The Stargazers’s space shuttle is sucked into a portal and they crash on a magical planet with a past of its own. Now stranded somewhere in the universe and threatened by fae hunters, unidentified creatures, and secrets beyond their imagination, they must find a way to survive or a way to get back home.

But it gets even more complicated when Julia is saved by a Luarian hunter and she discovers she has magical abilities she did not possess before. With love entanglements and betrayals, The Stargazers must survive the creatures hunting them and unravel the mystery of the truth behind The Stargazers Project. Julia can’t and won’t leave Luella until she finds out exactly what her destiny is.

Review: Worlds Collide (Worlds Collide Trilogy Book 1) by Clint Hall

SYNOPSIS
Five worlds at war. Only one can survive.

Ten thousand years ago, five cosmic beings—a dragon, a phoenix, a serpent, a lion, and a wolf—set their worlds on an inevitable collision course. Each civilization was given one command: destroy the rival worlds, or crash into them and die.

As the planets draw near to each other, the moment of final reckoning is at hand. In a galaxy filled with starfighters and superweapons, magic and manipulation, planet-killing devices and mechanized legions, five heroes must defend their homeworlds against overwhelming odds.

But when prophecy and destiny collide, a far greater power begins to stir—one that challenges everything they’ve been told.

Oaths will be broken. Chains will be shattered. Champions will rise. The fate of the universe hangs in the balance as these heroes discover whether any world deserves to survive.

The War of the Creators has begun.

Perfect for fans of Red Rising, The Expanse, and mythic sci-fi epics, Worlds Collide blends high-stakes interplanetary war with a legendary, fate-driven mystery—where the final battle may not be what it seems.

MY THOUGHTS

It’s not often that I want to go back and immediately reread a book right after I’ve finished it, but that’s exactly what happened with Worlds Collide. What an intricate, compelling, and just downright fantastic start to this sci-fi series. I loved it so much!

The worldbuilding is stunning. So complex and detailed. It follows five different characters on five different worlds. I was afraid that with all the characters and information that I might feel overwhelmed and not be able to keep things straight, but that wasn’t the case at all. It was fascinating learning about everything. And I really enjoyed reading about each of the characters and their world. But I think my favorite was TOM. I won’t say much, but his story was so fascinating.

I can’t recommend this book highly enough. It’s one of the best books I’ve read, not just this year, but maybe ever. I can’t say enough good things about it. If you’re a fan of this genre, don’t hesitate to grab a copy. You won’t be disappointed.

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.
