Book Beginnings + Friday 56: To Bring You Back (Rhythms of Redemption Romances #1) by Emily Conrad

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice and asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your ereader and share a non-spoilery sentence or two. I'm also linking up with Carrie at Reading is My Superpower for First Line Friday.

This week I'm featuring To Bring You Back (Rhythms of Redemption Romances #1) by Emily Conrad. I can't say enough good things about this book. I LOVE it!

It's been a stressful week, to say the least. My desktop computer completely died at the beginning of the week. It would cost more to try to fix it and/or recover my data, so I'm having to order a new one. It took me a few days (it takes me forever to make a big decision like that, lol), but I've finally ordered a new desktop and it should arrive in a week or two. I'm praying it's a good one. I always stress about making these kinds of decisions. I'm thankful I have a laptop, though. It's been a lifesaver, but I've still gotten really far behind on pretty much everything. I just wanted to let y'all know in case I'm a little slower with things right now.

About the Book (From Goodreads)
He's determined to confront the past she's desperate to forget.
Broke in more ways than one, the last thing Adeline Green can afford is for her now-famous high school crush to descend on her quiet life.

People in the small town of Lakeshore, Wisconsin, think of her as the hard-working church secretary or as the local food truck's lunch-hour cashier. They'd never suspect the shame she's hiding.

She attended high school with both the lead singer and the drummer of the rock band, Awestruck. In fact, she used to play in the band herself, but that was back before Awestruck made it big—and before her relationship with lead singer Gannon Vaughn took a turn that ultimately led to tragedy and heartbreak.

She's living a different life now, but when Gannon shows up, he brings with him a public spotlight that threatens to expose her deepest regret. The closer she gets to him, the more she risks the carefully curated life that's finally brought her a measure of peace.

Gannon Vaughn and his rock band, Awestruck, have conquered the music industry, but he can’t overcome his feelings for Adeline.

She may have been right to cut off contact between them years ago, but thanks to the grace of God, he's a changed man. When he hears Adeline’s struggling, he sets out to turn her life around and win back the love he lost to poor choices eight years ago.

But when Gannon’s fame and their mutual regrets jeopardize their relationship anew, will grace be enough to bring them back to God and each other?

A meaningful Christian romance with a side of fame and fortune for readers who enjoy faith-filled escapes and happily-ever-afters where no one is beyond hope of redemption. Start reading today!

Book Beginnings
At the sight of the food trailer's next customer, Adeline Green coughed on the bacon-scented air.

Friday 56
Gannon let the last note fade before glancing to gauge Adeline's reaction. Her eyes were wide, but her gaze pointed away, toward the painting. She started to open her mouth, then bit her lip. When she raised her hand to scratch her neck, her fingers trembled.

Review: An Alaskan Secret by Heidi McCahan

Their teenage romance is one neither has forgotten, but Asher’s secret lies between them. Now he will have to risk it all. Because telling the truth is the only path to a family reunion.

From Love Inspired: Uplifting stories of faith, forgiveness and hope.

MY THOUGHTS

I loved this heartwarming tale of forgiveness and second chances. It was my first time reading anything by Heidi McCahan, but it certainly won't be the last.

This story totally flips the secret child trope on its head, with the guy in the know and the heroine in the dark. I've only seen this done one other time, so I was curious about how it would play out. I've gotta say, I thought it was really well done. I was completely engaged and invested in these characters' lives.

I enjoyed the setting and the residents of Hearts Bay, Alaska, and am eager to visit again. I recommend this story to anyone who enjoys sweet contemporary romance.

Review: Cinderella Must Die by W.R. Gingell

About the Book
Cinderella is married to The Prince, and the Evil Stepsisters are banished to a pocket dimension for their punishment and rehabilitation. It’s Happily Ever After.

Or is it?

Jane and Charlie have been imprisoned for two years now, serving a sentence especially chosen by their stepsister as justice for her sufferings. It seems that they’re the only two people in the world besides Ellen who know that Ellen’s “sufferings” were a carefully manipulative campaign to win a prince and a crown; the two stepsisters merely collateral damage.

But now, trouble is brewing at the castle: death threats, torn gowns, ruined books.

Is Ellen up to her old tricks, or is someone really trying to kill her? And when even their closest friends didn’t believe them innocent the first time, can Jane and Charlie escape the blame a second time if Ellen does die?

MY THOUGHTS

If you know me, then you know I love a good retelling, Cinderella ones in particular. Though I think because that was my favorite fairytale when I was a kid, I'm a little pickier when it's retold. This one, from one of my favorite authors, was really good. It did take me just a little bit to get into it, but it wasn't long before I was obsessed and reading as fast as possible.

This story completely flips the original narrative and paints Cinderella as the villain and her stepsisters as the protagonists. I loved the whole idea and thought it was executed really well. And because it's a W.R. Gingell novel, it was a twisty and unpredictable ride from start to finish. That's one of the things I love about Gingell's books; I never know what will happen next. I'm constantly being surprised. I might think I have things figured out, but nope! I love when that happens! If you're a fan of twisted fairytales, pick up a copy of this book. You won't be disappointed.

Friday 56
Jane kicked Charlie in the ankle before she could say the remark that was obviously on the tip of her tongue - no doubt pointing out the acute similarity between Alaric and Harvey, who had also been trying very hard not to hear things he didn't want to hear and disbelieving those he couldn't help but hear.

As fear batters Fog Lake residents once again, Bear and Piper join forces to track down the truth. But the killer is determined to remain in the shadows—and he’ll destroy anyone who stands in his way.

MY THOUGHTS

What a great conclusion to the Colson family's story and the saga of the Good Samaritan Killer. I've been kept on the edge of my seat this entire series. There's so much action, suspense, and danger. It's been an exciting ride, to say the least.

Bear intrigued me from the moment he first appeared on page, so I was excited to get to know him better. There was a definite spark between him and Piper, but they both had some serious trust issues to work through before they could even think about anything serious between them.

The mystery was good. While I did guess a couple of the reveals, I was surprised by a few things. If you're looking for entertaining and quick reads, check out this series.

Can't Wait Wednesday: Knit or Dye Trying (A Riverbank Knitting Mystery #2) by Allie Pleiter

About the Book
Business is booming for Libby Beckett and her fabulous Maryland shop, aptly named Y.A.R.N., but when a town festival brings a fatality with it, Libby gets all tangled up in murder.

As spring comes to Collinstown, the village launches a food festival to draw a new group of tourists. Libby, proud owner of Y.A.R.N., has planned a yarn event to provide an alternative option to a foodie weekend. Artisan fiber dyer Julie Wilson--known for her work with animal-friendly, plant-based knitting fibers such as bamboo and hemp as well as her brilliant use of color--will hopefully draw a crowd with a special dyeing workshop.

The festival begins, but it draws more than crowds. First a flock of sheep parades down the street, herded by farmers protesting Julie's antiwool stance. Then Julie's celebrity chef sister appears, and the siblings resume a long-standing rivalry. Despite all this, Julie's workshop has sold out. Libby is thrilled, and they're preparing for a full house. But the night before the event, Julie is found alone in the warehouse event space--dead. The witty "Watch Julie Wilson Dye" workshop title now has a terrible new meaning--and it's up to Libby to catch a crafty killer.

Review: Galvanism and Ghouls (Manners and Monsters #2) by Tilly Wallace

About the Book
Together beyond death...

A new unnatural horror is about to rattle Hannah Miles' quiet existence, and it's not the short-tempered viscount prowling the hallways. Someone is creating a monster by stitching together pieces of different people. When a limb makes an escape attempt, Viscount Wycliff is called to investigate. All of London knows there is one mad scientist among them capable of creating such an ungodly monster... Sir Hugh Miles.

Hannah's father is suspected of a most heinous crime and she is determined to clear his name, even as Wycliff works to see the murderer hang. Buried secrets that touch all their lives will be brought to the surface. One such secret belongs to Hannah and could tear her world apart.

With Hannah and Wycliff on opposing sides, can they find the real monster and will it be the hand that wields the scalpel, or the creature hiding in the dark?

MY THOUGHTS
One didn’t have to scream and shout that one was not following the expected conventions. Many like herself went about quietly doing as they pleased. Marching to their own drum, as it were.
I had such a great time reading this book! This series is turning out to be so much fun. This installment was even better than the first. The world building is spectacular and the characters are charming and easy to root for. I can't get enough.

There were twists and turns and a couple of surprising reveals that I didn't see coming. I thought the mystery was good. I was absolutely convinced I knew who the guilty party was. So much so that I pretty much dismissed everyone else. Boy, was I in for a shock! And while this mystery was solved, there are quite a few loose threads that I'm sure will carry through the rest of the series, which I'm eager to read ASAP! If you're a fan of paranormal cozy mysteries, this series gets a huge recommendation from me. Start with book one and you'll be hooked!

Review: Shady Hollow by Juneau Black

About the Book
The first book in the Shady Hollow series, in which we are introduced to the village of Shady Hollow, a place where woodland creatures live together in harmony--until a curmudgeonly toad turns up dead and the local reporter has to solve the case.

Reporter Vera Vixen is a relative newcomer to Shady Hollow. The fox has a nose for news, so when she catches wind that the death might be a murder, she resolves to get to the bottom of the case, no matter where it leads. As she stirs up still waters, the fox exposes more than one mystery, and discovers that additional lives are in jeopardy.

Vera finds more to this town than she ever suspected. It seems someone in the Hollow will do anything to keep her from solving the murder, and soon it will take all of Vera's cunning and quickness to crack the case.

MY THOUGHTS

This was a really fun and whimsical cozy mystery. I thought the whole concept of the story was great. Talking animals living together in a cozy village trying to solve a murder? Yeah, sign me up! The story really did come alive. The descriptions were vivid, and I felt like I could picture everything clearly.

It's full of wonderful and lively characters. Good or bad, they were all distinct and very intriguing. From Vera the fox and investigative reporter, to Gladys the hummingbird and town gossip, to Orville the bear and police deputy, to Heidegger the owl and know-it-all philosophy professor, to Reginald von Beaverpelt the president of the sawmill, to Lenore the raven and owner of Nevermore Books, and so many more. They were so fun to read about.

The mystery was really good. Otto was not a very likable toad, so the suspects were plentiful. I had my suspicions early on but was never 100 percent sure and couldn't figure out a motive.

I expected to enjoy this book, but it was even better than I thought it'd be. As the story deepened, my love for it just kept growing. I can't say enough good things about it. If you're a fan of cozy mysteries, it's a must read.

I won this book in a giveaway and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

This week I'm featuring Give Your Heart to the Barrow (Bluebeard's Secret #3) by Sarah K.L. Wilson releasing March 29. The previous book ended on a horrible cliffhanger and so to say I've been anxious for this follow-up is an understatement.

About the Book

GIVE YOUR HEART TO THE BARROW is the third book in the Bluebeard's Secret series following the eerie and romantic story of DANCE WITH THE SWORD.

But Izolda is not the practical girl she once was who would have been happy for a home and a place. Instead, she's willing to make any bargain and offer any sacrifice if it will just get her back into the Wittenhame with a chance to win back the life of the man she loves, the man she once feared, the man destined to change everything - Bluebeard.

Can Izolda out-bargain the bargainers, out-trick the tricksters, and out-dare everyone else in her desperate bid to get back everything she's lost?

Warning: There are four books in this dark romantic fantasy series. Read at your own risk.

Review: The Do-Over by Bethany Turner

About the Book
Sometimes dreams come true. Other times, the best outcome begins with an epic fail.

Career-driven McKenna Keaton has devoted her life to attaining the senior partnership at her law firm. So asking a man on a date should be nothing. But the past four days have been the worst of her life and have called everything she thought she knew about herself into question. Besides, she can’t remember her last real date—one that didn’t involve using a blind date as an opportunity to get a stranger’s perspective on effective cross-examination techniques. (It’s like sharing fondue with a jury!)

But a real date? And with shy, nerdy Henry Blumenthal—McKenna’s high school rival for valedictorian who once took three hours to beat her at chess? Scratch that. He’s Hank Blume now, the famed documentarian, Durham’s darling son, who has attained all his dreams and more. He also happens to look like he stepped out of an Eddie Bauer catalog.

Whereas McKenna is a disgraced workaholic from New York on unpaid leave, accused of a white-collar crime she would never commit, succumbing to panic attacks, watching her dreams unravel. At age thirty-eight—and destined by the family curse to die before she turns forty, it appears—it’s absolutely the wrong time to have a major crush on a man. Especially one who treasures his memories of McKenna as the girl Most Likely to Succeed.

MY THOUGHTS

This was another fun romantic comedy from Bethany Turner. She has a real gift of bringing a story to life. This novel had the feel of so many of my favorite romantic comedy movies. It was unique in its own right, but there was just something nostalgic about it that I really enjoyed.

I really enjoyed McKenna's narration style. While she wasn't always the most likable person, she was always engaging and entertaining. She was very self-involved and solely focused on herself and her own goals, at the detriment to pretty much all of her relationships. Family, friends, etc. So it was very interesting seeing her head back home and come face-to-face with some of those issues. I do wish that she hadn't kept her secret from so many people for so long. I totally understand why she did it, but it still frustrated me to no end.

Now, Henry Blumenthal? Wow! What a swoonworthy hero! I mean, how could I resist the awkward smart guy who grew up to be such a ruggedly handsome documentarian? So irresistible!

I had a lot of fun reading this novel and recommend it to anyone who enjoys clean romantic comedies. I'm eagerly looking forward to whatever Bethany Turner releases next.

I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Review: Brass Carriages and Glass Hearts by Nancy Campbell Allen

About the Book
A steampunk retelling of Cinderella.

Emmeline O’Shea is determined to save the world—single-handedly, if necessary. A strong voice for societal reform, she is the natural choice to deliver a key speech at the end of the International Shifter Rights Organization’s week-long Summit in Scotland.

But when a death threat arrives at Emme’s home, she is immediately placed into protective custody, watched over by none other than her personal nemesis, Detective-Inspector Oliver Reed. The two have crossed paths many times, with disastrous results, but now they will have to work together in order to reach the Summit before midnight of the last day in order to ensure legislation is passed to protect the Shifter community.

As unseen enemies close in around Emme and Oliver, they struggle to reach Edinburgh by any means necessary, only to find Emme’s vindictive stepsister, Oliver’s vampire brother, and a dangerous political minefield awaiting them in Scotland.

Even more difficult is their own refusal to admit that the fiery animosity that once burned between them might be turning into the heat of romantic passion. Could a straitlaced policeman determined to uphold the law and an outspoken activist willing to break the rules ever find true love? Or will all their dreams shatter like glass when the clock strikes midnight?

MY THOUGHTS

This was a fun read. The whole series has been a blast. I love a good retelling, and when you add steampunk into the mix, how can I resist?

This was probably my least favorite in the series, but in no way was it bad. I loved that Emme and Oliver finally got their happily ever after, and I enjoyed getting to see the previous characters. It was neat seeing what they were up to now. I did feel like the pacing was a little uneven at times, which made for a slower read than I expected. And while I felt like we got to know Emme really well, Oliver wasn't quite as fleshed-out and three-dimensional as her.

I loved all the nods to Cinderella. I thought the first part was a little light on the retelling aspect and I was beginning to wonder when the fairy tale parts were gonna show up. But they did eventually appear, and I thought they were cleverly done. (I loved Gus Gus!)

If you're a fan of steampunk, or just wanting to give it a try, I definitely recommend this series. I'd say start with book one, though. This one could probably technically stand alone, but there's a lot of backstory that would be missed out on. Plus, Beauty and the Clockwork Beast is one of my all-time favorite retellings.

About the Book
Can this undercover agent save the woman he loves--or is her heart as counterfeit as the money he's been sent to track down?

After all that Grandfather has sacrificed to raise her, Theresa Plane owes it to him to save the family name--and that means clearing their debt with creditors before she marries Edward Greystone. But when one of the creditors' threats leads her to stumble across a midnight meeting, she discovers that the money he owes isn't all Grandfather was hiding. And the secrets he kept have now trapped Theresa in a life-threatening fight for her home--and the truth.

After months of undercover work, Secret Service operative Broderick Cosgrove is finally about to uncover the identity of the leader of a notorious counterfeiting ring. That moment of triumph turns to horror, however, when he finds undeniable proof that his former fiancée is connected. Can he really believe the woman he loved is a willing participant? Protecting Theresa and proving her innocence may destroy his career--but that's better than failing her twice in one lifetime.

They must form a partnership, tentative though it is. But there's no question they're both still keeping secrets--and that lack of trust, along with the dangerous criminals out for their blood, threatens their hearts, their faith, and their very survival.

Combining rich history, danger, suspense, and romance, Crystal Caudill's debut novel launches this new historical series with a bang. Fans of Elizabeth Camden, Michelle Griep, and Joanna Davidson Politano will be thrilled to find another author to follow!

MY THOUGHTS

I was so happy to have won this book in a giveaway. I probably never would've picked up a copy of it otherwise. I don't read a lot of nonfiction. I probably should read more of it; I've just always been more drawn to fiction. But anyway, this book was great. Filled with lots of helpful advice and words of wisdom for this chronic worrier.

My favorite chapter, and the one I'm going to strive to put into practice right now, was "What If...Wow." This really opened my eyes up to how often I always think and then prepare myself for the worst-case scenario to happen. Thinking, "What if...ugh" situations. But what I should be doing instead is thinking about all the "What if...wow!" moments that could happen. Starting with a positive attitude and thinking about all the wonderful things that could happen, instead of expecting everything to go wrong. This isn't gonna be easy, but I'm really gonna try.

This was a really great book that's backed up with scripture. And while there were a few things I didn't quite agree with, this book as a whole was very helpful and full of lots of good tips. I highly recommend it to every woman. Everything in here might not apply to everyone, but it's well worth the read. I'm planning on reading it again soon.

I won this book in a giveaway and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Book Beginnings + Friday 56: Brass Carriages and Glass Hearts by Nancy Campbell Allen

This week I'm featuring Brass Carriages and Glass Hearts by Nancy Campbell Allen, the fourth book in a series of steampunk fairytale retellings.

Book Beginnings
Emmeline Castle O'Shea stood at a podium on the balcony of the Municipal Hall for Citizen Affairs and looked out with satisfaction at the murmuring crowd, feeling the energy build in the large room as she finished speaking.

Friday 56
Gus looked at Oliver with sympathy, which reinforced Emme's prior assessment of their new acquaintance. "It is easy to don blinders where family is concerned. The most crucial information for you to know at this point is Lawrence Reed and the vampire Cadre, which he leads, are determined to prevent wide-scale acceptance of shifter reform."

Review: The Real Thing: A sweet & clean opposites-attract disabled hero romance in Scotland (The Macleans Book 4) by Autumn Macarthur

About the Book
He's an embittered cynic. She's a perpetually cheerful Pollyanna. They both need to learn what trusting God really means.

Disabled since birth, bullied as a child, Edinburgh author Brodie Maclean has no faith in God, or in human nature. He learned young that his best weapons are his sharp tongue and his biting honesty, and he doesn’t hesitate to use them. When he’s forced to employ Flynn Ferguson as his housekeeper, it’s instant dislike. She’s too cheerful, she’s too loud, she’s too everything. Including distracting. How is he supposed to write with her around?

Even always-look-on-the-bright-side Flynn finds it hard to be glad about her new boss, apart from the little fact the generous salary he pays means she can give her daughter a wonderful birthday. As soon as she can (“Tomorrow, please Lord?”), she’ll quit.

Neither intends to deceive the other, but only when they meet online in an unintentional deception, safe behind names that aren’t their names and photos that aren’t their photos, are they able to be their real selves and fall in love. Can they recognise the truth behind their false impressions before it’s too late?

You’ve Got Mail meets As Good As It Gets meets a mischievous ferret in this faith-filled Scottish enemies-to-love opposites-attract romance.

MY THOUGHTS

I really enjoyed this sweet read. It was so much fun and was filled with a lot of laughs, a ton of heart, and an inspiring message that really resonated with me.

I liked Brodie and Flynn a lot. There was just something so endearing about both of them. Brodie was a bit of a grump at first glance, but he was hiding a heart of gold beneath that gruff exterior. Flynn was cheerful and always tried to look on the bright side of things, even when things weren't all sunshine and roses. You could say they were complete opposites, but they complimented each other so well.

This book left a big smile on my face. And even though it's book four, it stands alone just fine. If you're a fan of sweet romances and Hallmark movies, you're sure to love it!

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Can't Wait Wednesday: The Do-Over by Bethany Turner

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week I'm featuring The Do-Over by Bethany Turner releasing March 15.

About the Book (Synopsis from Amazon)
