Book Beginnings + Friday 56: Just the Way You Are by Pepper Basham

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice and asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your ereader and share a non-spoilery sentence or two.

For the next couple of weeks I thought I'd share some of my favorite books I've read this year. This week I'm featuring Just the Way You Are by Pepper Basham.

Book Beginning

One step into the massive, glass-walled waiting area was all it took.

In a cataclysmic chain of events, someone bumped into Eisley Barrett, sending her purse and all its contents skittering across the glossy floor of Heathrow International Airport. Just as she regained her balance, her heel caught on her purse strap, forcing her off-kilter.

She liked comedy, but this was ridiculous.

Friday 56 (56% on my Kindle)

"I have connections in many unexpected places, my dear. I know how to find information when it's useful to me." A smirk crept onto her face, slow and wicked, like the Grinch whose heart was three sizes too small.

About the Book

Single mom, Eisley Barrett, prefers to keep romance housed within a centuries-old mystery, but when she travels to England to unearth the secret, an actor with a sordid past offers her heart a very different type of discovery.

Wes Harrison has a past he's ashamed to confess. Suspicious and cynical, he's managed to avoid romantic entanglements since a tragedy upended his career and life, that is until American Eisley Barrett comes along. Her authenticity and kindness upend his bitter assumptions and send his heart into unscripted territory.

When his past threatens to ruin a second chance at love, can some Appalachian matchmaking and letters from the grave salvage their unexpected romance?

Humor, love, mystery, cute kids, crazy families, and culture clashes make this Britallachian Romance a unique and delightful romantic comedy sprinkled with adventure.

Review: Relentless: A Raven Remington Novel by Christy Barritt

About the Book

An ex-CIA operative. A top-secret mission. Danger that lurks at every turn.

Raven Remington is facing her most challenging mission: protecting the man who may have killed her sister. The former spy is still trying to integrate into life as a civilian and figure out whom to trust. With each passing day, the task becomes more difficult.

Can Raven figure out who is trying to assassinate the man—the senator—she’s been tasked to protect . . . or will surprises hidden just below the surface destroy life as she knows it?

*Relentless is based on the fictional TV show starring Hollywood starlet Joey Darling from The Worst Detective Ever mystery series.

My Review

Four Stars

It was so great to get a peek at an episode of Joey Darling's (from the Worst Detective Ever series) hit TV show Relentless and to see her character Raven Remington in action. Raven is awesome. She's strong and fierce, a force to be reckoned with. I can totally understand why she has such a passionate fan base.

This novella was full of suspense and had me turning the pages as fast as I could. While I was reading, it really felt like I was watching an actual TV show. If this were a show that was on TV right now, I would totally watch it. I'm really hoping there are more episodes to come! And even if you haven't read the Worst Detective Ever series, yet, Relentless can definitely still be enjoyed. Highly recommend!

I received a copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Can't Wait Wednesday: Keturah by Lisa T. Bergren

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week I'm featuring Keturah (The Sugar Baron's Daughters) by Lisa T. Bergren releasing February 6, 2018.

About the Book

In 1772 England, Lady Keturah Banning Tomlinson and her sisters find themselves the heiresses of their father's estates and know they have one option: Go to the West Indies to save what is left of their heritage.

Although it flies against all the conventions for women of the time, they're determined to make their own way in the world. But once they arrive in the Caribbean, proper gender roles are the least of their concerns. On the infamous island of Nevis, the sisters discover the legacy of the legendary sugar barons has vastly declined--and that's just the start of what their eyes are opened to in this unfamiliar world.

Keturah never intends to put herself at the mercy of a man again, but every man on the island seems to be trying to win her hand and, with it, the ownership of her plantation. She could desperately use an ally, but even an unexpected reunion with a childhood friend leaves her questioning his motives.

Set on keeping her family together and saving her father's plantation, can Keturah ever surrender her stubbornness and guarded heart to God and find the healing and love awaiting her?

Why I Need It

I've not read many books set in the West Indies or dealing with sugar plantations, but I've really enjoyed all of the books I've read by Bergren. So I'm really interested to check this one out. I bet it will be great.

Review: One Enchanted Eve by Melissa Tagg

About the Book

A delightful Christmas romance about finding the perfect recipe for love.

After years of mistakes and regret, Colin Renwycke finally has a plan: Hone his baking talent at the Denver Culinary Institute and embark on a new career as a pastry chef. If he's lucky, he might even manage to earn back his family's respect. But despite his skills in the kitchen, Colin's a mess in the classroom and his ongoing disasters are proving too much for his prickly instructor. If he loses his spot at the school, he's out of backup plans.

Culinary school instructor Rylan Jefferson has the chance to reclaim her dream of running her own bakery. But she only has until Christmas Eve to come up with the perfect recipe to impress an eccentric investor. She has no time for holiday parties or family plans . . . and especially not for the unruly student baker who couldn't follow a recipe if his life depended on it.

But Colin has the one ingredient Rylan needs most—talent. Lots of it. And when he makes a proposal that just might solve both their problems, Rylan can't say no—even if it does mean traveling all the way to Iowa. It just might be that the snow-covered plains and a charming small town full of postcard Christmas cheer are exactly what her hungry heart needs . . . along with a man who is much more than he seems.

My Review

Five Stars

One Enchanted Eve was SO good! It was such a wonderful and 'enchanting' novella that's perfect for putting the reader in the Christmas spirit. I've loved everything I've read by Melissa Tagg. She's so great at crafting realistic and likable characters, swoony heroes, and meaningful faith-filled moments that touch my heart. And I've gotta say, I absolutely loved being back in Maple Valley. I love that town! Seriously, it'd be a dream place to live!

I'll admit it, I have a bit of a crush on Colin. He's kind of a disaster in the kitchen, but his determination was super endearing. And the fact that he's trying to change his old habits, made him even more likable. Rylan likes things a particular way, while Colin likes to shake things up. So, as you can probably imagine, their interactions were quite entertaining.

I read this super quick. And even though it's a novella, it didn't feel like one. It was a complete, fully fleshed out story. I found myself with a big smile on my face numerous times throughout this story. I highly recommend and can't wait to start Leigh's story, One Enchanted Noël!

Book Beginnings + Friday 56: Mowed Over (Beards and Belles Book 1) by Christina Coryell

For the next few weeks I thought I'd share some of my favorite books I've read this year. This week I'm featuring Mowed Over (Beards and Belles Book 1) by Christina Coryell. This was such a cute and quirky novella that I adored. It's the story that first introduced me to Ms. Coryell and her fabulous writing. She's now got a spot on my favorite authors list.

Book Beginning

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a beautiful fairy in possession of a large mushroom hut must be in want of companionship. #willowfairies

Friday 56 (56% on my Kindle)

He was either sweet as syrup on a candy cane or a little delusional. She didn't want to take a guess at which was accurate.

About the Book

A tiny, chatty fairy artist with multicolored pastel hair. A burly, bearded landscaper who can’t get a word in edgewise. They have nothing in common, but is that enough to keep them apart?

Willow Sharpe has two current relationships: her recently relocated best friend, and the fairies she draws for a living. She’s promised to create a romance for her most popular fairy, but can’t seem to make herself follow through. That changes when a local landscaper nearly mows her over, disrupting her solitary existence.

Clint Kirkland doesn’t pursue relationships. Most women expect him to hold up his end of the conversation, and he’s not adept at small talk. When he meets the city slicker artist with the pastel colored hair, the only thing he knows for sure is that she makes him uncomfortable. But things get even more complicated when one of her fairy creations begins to look a lot like him.

Soon the two can’t decide whether the real relationship is driving the fairy romance, or vice versa. And though they both know that opposites can attract, they have to discern whether opposites can sustain the kind of love that lasts.

Review: Ordinary Snowflakes by Jennifer Rodewald

About the Book

Someone has noticed me. A secret admirer? A man with a good heart, who sees how much I actually need help, even though I never admit it? Maybe this is the beginning of a beautiful story—a romance full of hope and second chances and love.

Maybe…

A secret Santa gift left on Kale Brennan’s front porch opens up a fresh view of her ordinary life, and perhaps of God. Maybe she does matter. Maybe God sees her—as does a new-to-town music teacher who has her seven-year-old daughter gushing and her own knees buckling with his killer smile. But as Kale embraces new possibilities, a staple in her life—a man who is kind and steady, not to mention necessary for her injured daughter’s recovery—also snatches her attention in an unexpected way. Will the one pursuing her with his secret gift and kind gestures be the one her heart longs for in the end?

My Review

Five Stars

Wow! Ordinary Snowflakes was outstanding! It made me laugh. It made me cry. It made me sigh in wonder and squeal with delight. It was the perfect novella to get me in the Christmas spirit. Kale was super likable and her daughter, Sydney, was absolutely adorable. Sydney has faced a lot in her life, but she has such a sunshiny spirit and positive attitude despite it all. So admirable!

Ordinary Snowflakes was a powerful read. There were times when it literally took my breath away. The message of this story was so impactful, so meaningful, something that really touched my heart. God is always near. He is always close. He will never leave us. This story will stay with me for a long time. I highly, highly recommend!

Can't Wait Wednesday: The Orphan's Wish by Melanie Dickerson

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week I'm featuring The Orphan's Wish by Melanie Dickerson releasing June 26, 2018.

About the Book

From New York Times bestselling author Melanie Dickerson comes a magical fairy tale retelling in The Orphan’s Wish.

From the streets of the Holy Land to an orphanage in a faraway kingdom, Aladdin has grown up alone. Until he meets Kirstyn. With a father who is the duke of Hagenheim and a mother who is the patroness of the orphanage where Aladdin lives, Kirstyn is a member of the most powerful family in the land . . . and way out of his league. Despite the difference in their stations, Aladdin quickly becomes Kirstyn’s favorite companion for taking walks in the forest, and their childhood friendship grows along with them.

Through his scrappy skills, intelligence, and hard work, Aladdin earns a position serving in the duke’s house. But he knows it isn’t enough to grant him his one desire: Kirstyn’s hand in marriage. If he hopes to change his station in life and feel worthy of marrying Kirstyn, he must leave Hagenheim to seek his fortune.

But once Aladdin leaves, no one is around to protect Kirstyn, and the greedy men desperate to take advantage of her father’s wealth take notice. Now, more than Aladdin’s background stands in the way of the future he’s worked so hard to obtain. His only hope is to rescue Kirstyn and somehow manage to win her hand as well.

Why I Need It

While Aladdin has never been one of my favorite fairy tales, I'm excited to see what Ms. Dickerson does with the story. She's a master at fairy tale retellings, so it should be really good.

Review: Christmas at Gate 18 by Amy Matayo

About the Book

Supermodel Rory Gray just wants to go home. After wrapping up a three-day high-fashion photo shoot overseas, she’s exhausted and ready for the holiday. A holiday that involves Hollywood parties, air-kissing the industry elite, and a whole lot of fakeness…but whatever. Once she gets through that torture, she’ll head to her beloved Seattle and the life of anonymity she misses so much. In less than twenty-four hours, she’ll be there.

Colt Ross has spent the past six months detaching himself from the Hollywood world he grew up in, and home is the last place he wants to be. But he’s been called back by his overbearing father for reasons he can only imagine. Likely reasons that involve taking over the family corporation or fund raising among Hollywood elite—something Colt has no interest in being part of. Not that he has a choice; when you’re the son of an industry executive, rubbing elbows comes with the territory. In less than twenty-four hours he’ll be home. After all this time away, home no longer appeals to him. Especially not at Christmas. Leave it to his father to ruin a holiday.

But when a late-season hurricane grounds both of their flights in the Dominican Republic, Rory and Colt find themselves stuck at the airport far longer than anticipated. As weather conditions worsen, they both begin to realize that this Christmas will be spent with strangers packed inside a single airport terminal—specifically at gate 18.

Rory and Colt are faced with a choice: band together in their misery or make this Christmas one they will never forget. For two people who aren’t real fond of the holiday, this Christmas might turn out to be the best they’ve ever had.

My Review

4.5 Stars

Christmas at Gate 18 was so much fun! It was a lighthearted and hilarious rom-com, but there was depth and a great message, as well. Rory and Colt are stranded at an airport in a foreign country for Christmas because of a freak late-season hurricane. Can they make the best out of a bad situation or will they succumb to the stress of their 'ruined' holiday?

I wasn't sure I was going to like Rory. She's a supermodel, who at first glance seemed very high maintenance and stuck-up. But it soon became apparent that that was not the case at all. She's incredibly likeable and even somewhat relatable. And Colt... oh goodness! Just like Rory, I wasn't sure I was gonna like him either. He came off as a jerk in the beginning. But it wasn't long before I warmed up to him. He had many hidden layers and was trying his best to change. This novella was an excellent reminder that first impressions are more often than not deceiving.

Christmas at Gate 18 was a fantastic Christmas novella that had me cracking up with laughter from beginning to end. I highly recommend!

12 Days of Clean Romance – Day 12 – December 16th – Cami Checketts (Plus a Giveaway!)

How to Kiss a Billionaire by Cami Checketts

Sassy meets swoon-worthy in this fast-paced contemporary romance.

Miriam Salisbury escapes to Oregon to avoid a boyfriend who won’t take no for an answer, killing her beloved cat to prove it. When her father sends Clay Browning to protect her, she’s certain he’s lost his mind. As far as she’s concerned Clay’s experience is limited to posing for the camera, charming women, and making fun of her. He’s been teasing her since they were children and she’s never gotten over the way he threw crawdads at her at church picnics.

Clay retired from the military and entered the world of private security. When he gets the call to protect Miriam he’s excited to be around his lifelong crush. As expected, he teases her nonstop and the only thing he takes seriously is her security. He knows she’d never give him a chance and he can’t help but give her a hard time.

After Miriam is dumped in the freezing ocean on a crabbing expedition and Clay saves her from drowning and freezing to death, she takes a second look at her hired gun. But opening up to him is more terrifying than facing her stalker.

As events escalate to a frenzied climax, Miriam and Clay must put aside past grudges in the hope of finding a lasting love for their future.

Miriam closed her eyes as Clay’s arms came around her and held her tight.

“Whoa, darling, if I would’ve known I’d get this reception, I would’ve broken into your house years ago.”

Miriam pushed away from him, stumbling from the realization that he hadn’t changed. Clay was a vicious flirt and never took anything seriously. She shoved at his chest, but he didn’t budge. He was real and he was here, and unfortunately for her unsteady nerves, it didn’t look like he was going away. “What are you doing here?” she demanded.

“Your daddy hired me.”

“My daddy … hired you?” She glared at him. “For what? A pinup model?”

He smiled and tilted his head to the side. “I know I look good, but I actually have a few skills in protection too.”

“You do not. All you’ve ever been good at is spending your billions of dollars and getting women to simper at your feet.” She knew he’d been in the military for four years after high school, but after that, he appeared to be the ultimate player. At least, it looked that way in the online photos she’d seen, when she’d googled him. Okay, it was pathetic that she’d googled him, but he was Clay Browning, a.k.a. Miriam’s dream man.

He spread his arms, and she couldn’t help but notice the definition from his forearms and biceps up through his shoulders and chest. Maybe he should find a shirt that wasn’t so … form-fitting. “Hey, I’ve got lots of talents. What can I say?”

Miriam pushed out a huffy breath. “You are not here. This is all some kind of crazy fantasy.”

“I know I’m the stuff fantasies are made of, but I really am here.” He sauntered a step closer, and that spicy cologne made her stomach heat up. “You want to enact some of those fantasies you’ve been having about me?”

She put a hand on his chest to keep him from coming any closer. Those muscles were real. Yikes. She dropped her hand and stepped back. “For one second, just for one, be serious. Why are you here, and how did you get in my house?”

Clay rolled his eyes and folded his arms across his chest. Sheesh. What did he do with biceps that defined? Wrestle bulls?

Focus, Miriam!

“Your daddy called me, said Greg was threatening and stalking you and I had to find you. So I found you, and now I’m here to watch over you.”

Watch over you? She would not survive with this man in the same town, let alone the same house. Her throat was dry and all those daydreams she used to have about him rotated through her mind.

“How did you get in?” she demanded.

“I told you: I have skills.” He smiled and finally admitted, “I was special ops in the Army and I’ve worked in private security since then.”

“You’re being serious now? This isn’t some bull crap line that Clay Browning is giving me?”

He smirked. “You can believe whatever you want, sweetheart.” He took a step closer, and her legs betrayed her by not backing up. “But do believe that I’m here and you I and are going to get real cozy.”

Miriam looked over his gorgeous face. She clenched her trembling hands together and swallowed hard. “I’m not one of your flavors of the week, Clay.”

He leaned in and sniffed her. “Ah. Yeah, I think you are. Vanilla with a hint of chocolate. My favorite flavor this week.”

Lux’s cheeks dusted pink. With her red hair and fair skin, she should have flushed bright red, but only this sprinkling of pink appeared, like she’d been dusted with pink powdered sugar. Why did this woman bring to mind sweet things like powdered sugar and chocolate and kisses at sunset? He gave his head a mighty shake. “You fell in the water.” “I know.” At least, he thought he knew. Everything had happened so fast. He’d fallen asleep and woken up when the ice cracked. He plopped his feet to the floor only to have them land in several inches of water. His stove had tipped over and the hot metal had melted clear through the ice. There must have been a crack in the ice nearby. “We pulled you out.” “We?” Quik adjusted the blankets over his arms. He could only imagine Lux and Ginger and Frost tearing his clothes off. Lux made to adjust her glasses, but they weren’t there. She looked around like they’d fallen off and she didn’t know how. So he wasn’t the only one thrown off by all this. Quik’s eyes traveled lower to find her bare shoulders and her skintight tank top. He jerked his eyes back up to her face, hoping she hadn’t caught his wandering eye. “Me and Dunder.” She chewed her lip. “My reindeer.” “Of course.” The situation was going up in weirdness. Having used up all his ability to care about propriety, Quik leaned back against the seat. He was in the bottom of a fancy velvet-lined sled. Yep. Weird. His eyes dropped shut. “You cut my pants?” he asked. “I’ll get you new ones,” offered Lux. “Did you cut my shirt too?” “No!” She was offended. That was kind of cute. “Too bad. I needed a new shirt.” He half smiled.
