Book Beginnings, First Line Friday, & Friday 56: Shade Grown (Barks & Beans Cafe Cozy Mystery #8) by Heather Day Gilbert

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. I'm also linking up with Carrie at Reading is My Superpower for First Line Friday. Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice and asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your ereader and share a non-spoilery sentence or two. Freda is taking a hiatus right now, but Anne over at My Head is Full of Books has taken over until Freda returns.

This week I'm featuring Shade Grown (Barks & Beans Cafe Cozy Mystery #8) by Heather Day Gilbert.

About the Book
Welcome to the Barks & Beans Cafe, a quaint place where folks pet shelter dogs while enjoying a cup of java...and where murder sometimes pays a visit.

During Lewisburg's popular summer home and garden tour, Macy and her brother Bo discover new aspects of their hometown's history. One of the last homes they visit features a lush commemorative shade garden marking where a Civil War soldier's bones were buried. As Macy pauses to admire a bed of blue hostas, she glimpses a shadowy shape lying beneath the dinner-plate leaves. It turns out to be the body of famed movie star Cody Franklin, who'd purchased the garden house as a quiet country retreat.

Back at the cafe, Macy speaks with Cody's distraught sister, who lets slip that she's afraid her brother's killer will target her next. Macy's heart goes out to the bereaved sibling, and she agrees to speak with Cody's local acquaintances in hopes she'll uncover some helpful backstory.

But someone powerful is lurking behind the scenes, and Macy has to zoom in on the killer before everything fades to black.

Join siblings Macy and Bo Hatfield as they sniff out crimes in their hometown...with plenty of dogs along for the ride! The Barks & Beans Cafe cozy mystery series features a small town, an amateur sleuth, and no swearing or graphic scenes.

Book Beginnings / First Line Friday
"Couldn't have asked for a better day for a home and garden tour." My brother Bo pushed his sunglasses up onto his red hair. He walked a couple steps ahead of me on the buckling brick sidewalk.

Friday 56
Coal tugged on his leash. I followed him down the sidewalk, only too happy to put as much distance between me and the irritating contractor as possible.

MY THOUGHTS

This is my favorite book in the series so far. I didn’t think it was possible, but it topped the previous two. With each book, this series just gets better and better!

I’ve really enjoyed watching these characters' journeys. They’ve each grown so much! One of the things I’ve loved the most is how authentically real they all seem. These are real-life struggles and dilemmas they’re dealing with. I might not always agree with the way they act or with their reactions, but that’s life. And I’ve loved watching it all unfold. I’ve loved watching them discover new things about themselves. And I’ve absolutely loved seeing their continued spiritual growth. It’s so inspiring!

There were quite a few new characters introduced, and I enjoyed the new dynamics they added. It’ll be very interesting to see where things go next. This is a fantastic series that I wholeheartedly recommend. Be sure to start with book one because these are not standalones.

I received an advanced copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my own honest opinions.

Can't Wait Wednesday: Embers in the London Sky by Sarah Sundin

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week I'm featuring Embers in the London Sky by Sarah Sundin releasing February 6 2024.

About the Book

When German bombs set London ablaze, BBC radio correspondent Hugh Collingwood reports on the Blitz, eager to boost morale while walking the fine line between truth and censorship. But the Germans are not the only ones Londoners have to fear as a series of murders flame up amid the ashes.

The deaths hit close to home for Hugh, and Aleida needs his help to locate her missing son. As they work together, they grow closer and closer, both to each other and the answers they seek. But with bombs falling and continued killings, they may be running out of time.

Review: For the Sake of Her Sons by Allie Pleiter

True North Springs

Book 1: Restoring Their Family
Book 2: The Nurse's Homecoming
Book 3: For the Sake of Her Sons

MY THOUGHTS

I loved this story! Allie Pleiter’s books always make me feel the full spectrum of emotions. I don’t know how she does it, but there’s always some aspect of her books that I can relate to and a spiritual message that I need to hear. I loved how this story dealt with facing fears and finding courage.

I enjoyed visiting Camp True North Springs again. It’s such a special and inspiring place where families can go to help them deal with the grief of losing a loved one to tragedy.

I liked Bruce right from the start. There was a gentleness about him that really drew me to him. He was so kind and patient with Willa’s twin boys, Joe and Jack. Willa had some sharp edges, which was completely understandable considering what she'd been through. And I know firsthand how fear can do that to a person. I ended up really liking her and was rooting for her to overcome her fears.

All in all, this was another heartwarming and sweet story by Allie Pleiter. If you’re a fan of this genre, you’ll love this book!

I received an advanced copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Once, Catriona Macgregor led a charmed life. Daughter of a wealthy rancher, pretty and educated, she looked forward to all the world had to offer—until fate took a turn. Now family, home, and even her name have been stripped away. As “Black Cat Whitfield,” adopted daughter of an outlaw, she’s wanted by the authorities.

This week I'm featuring The Looking-Glass Illusion by Sara Ella. It's the conclusion to the Curious Realities duology and, oh my goodness! It's so good! It has to be the best Alice in Wonderland retelling I've read.

About the Book
Step through the looking glass. Slay the Jabberwock. Seek the King.

Alice is not prepared to face what awaits beyond the Tulgey Wood. When she and the rest of Team Heart enter the fourth and final Wonderland Trial, it’s up to her to lead them to victory. But this Trial is more than a game. If Alice and the others fail to defeat the Jabberwock and reveal the truth about Wonderland, more than points and fame will be lost.

Chess Shire never believed he’d make it this far. Now he’s stuck navigating a Trial he’s seen but doesn’t remember, all while searching for the brother he left behind. Not everything is as black and white as the game that shares his name. And if Alice discovers his deepest regret? Chess might just lose her too.

Apart, Chess and Alice scour the eight squares of the Heart Trial in search of memories, truth, and an Ivory King who seems more illusion than reality. Will they learn to lead together to face their greatest fears? Or will they remain pawns in a queen’s game, never truly seeing the Wonderland they’ve come to believe in?

Book Beginnings / First Line Friday
Deep breath. She's all right.
We're all right.
As long as we stay together, everything will be all right.

Friday 56
I suddenly wish we could make this a lengthier goodbye. That we could spend hours and days and weeks filling in every blank and eliminating every question mark. But we have to keep moving forwards on the board. We did come to finish, after all.
And all of Wonderland - even if they don't know it yet - is counting on us to reveal the truth.

Review: The Blonde Identity by Ally Carter

About the Book
It’s the middle of the night in the middle of Paris and a woman just woke up with no memory.

She only knows three things for certain:

1. She has a splitting headache.

2. The hottest guy she has (probably) ever seen is standing over her, telling her to run.

And oh yeah…

3. People keep trying to kill her.

She doesn’t know who. Or why. But when she sees footage of herself fighting off a dozen men there’s only one explanation: obviously. . . she’s a spy!

Except, according to Mr. Hot Guy, she’s not. She’s a spy’s identical twin sister.

Too bad the only person who knows she’s not the woman they’re looking for is this very grouchy, very sexy, very secret agent who (reluctantly) agrees to help her disappear. Which is easier said than done when a criminal organization wants you dead and every intelligence service in the world wants you caught.

Luckily, no one is looking for a pair of lovesick newlyweds on their honeymoon. And soon they’re lying their way across Europe—dodging bullets and faking kisses as they race to unravel a deadly conspiracy and clear her sister’s name.

But with every secret they uncover, the truth shifts, until she no longer knows who to trust: the twin she can’t remember or the mysterious man she can’t let herself forget…

MY THOUGHTS

I absolutely loved this story! It’s a romantic comedy that features a hefty dose of suspense and mystery. Talk about a perfect combination!

I was a huge fan of the Gallagher Girl series, and this book made me think of a grownup version of those stories. It was so much fun! The amnesia trope is always hit or miss for me, so I’m happy to say that it was a hit in this book. It worked so well!

I loved that this book didn’t take itself too seriously. I laughed the whole way through. It was exactly the type of lighthearted fun I needed. It was fast-paced and exciting. I need more books like this in my life. It was so good!

I will say, though, that a little suspension of belief was needed. It didn’t hinder my enjoyment a bit, though. There was some bad language, and while there were no open-door scenes, it came close a few times and was a little spicier than I tend to like. But other than that, this was a fantastic read. I’m hoping for more books featuring these characters!

Book Beginnings, First Line Friday, & Friday 56: The Blonde Identity by Ally Carter

This week I'm featuring The Blonde Identity by Ally Carter. It's such a fun combination of rom-com and romantic suspense. I want more books like this. :D

Top Ten Tuesday: Books on my Winter TBR List

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This week's topic is Books on my Winter TBR List. I'm sharing books I have that I'm hoping to read this winter. This year has been one of the most stressful ones for me, which hasn't left me with as much time for reading as I usually have. So, some of these books have been on my TBR pile for awhile.

Estuary (Oceans of Time #1) by Lisa T. Bergren

About the Book
Can a family bond stand the test of time?

Lady Tiliani Forelli is the epitome of the She-Wolves who raised her, an adept archer with a mind of her own. It is long past time for her to wed, but she deems each young lord who comes to bid for her hand lacking. With battles upon their border, and rumors of war growing louder on every front, Lady Forelli’s decision could secure her kingdom’s peace . . . or bring about its destruction.

Centuries later, history major Luciana Betarrini takes a summer job alongside her twin, Domenico, as a period actor at Castello Forelli in Italy. As incoming college seniors, this might be their last chance to spend meaningful time together, so she’s soaking up every minute. Beauty Reborn by Elizabeth Lowham

About the Book
Fantasy and reality collide in this retelling of “Beauty and the Beast” about a young woman’s heroic quest to save herself.

Beauty’s life is the stuff of fairy tales. The youngest in her family, Beauty isn’t trying to catch Stephan’s eye. He is the lord baron’s heir, well above her family’s modest station, but when he kisses her hand at a party, Beauty is swept away by his charm, his wit, and his passionate declarations of love.

Hearts can be untamable creatures, especially when touched by the fires of first love, and Beauty doesn’t see the truth of Stephan’s intentions until it is too late. Until he stops asking for Beauty’s love—and simply takes it from her one night despite her refusal.

Beauty locks away the secret of what happened to her, and when her father emerges from the enchanted forest with a stolen rose in his hand and the tale of a vicious beast on his breath, Beauty seizes the chance to run as far from Stephan as possible.

She has some experience with beasts, after all. Certainly the one in the forest couldn’t be any worse than the one she’s already encountered.

Breaking the Beast’s curse might be the key to discovering her own path to healing—and finding the courage to allow herself to feel reborn.

The Happy Life of Isadora Bentley by Courtney Walsh

About the Book
She’s out to prove that there’s no such thing as choosing happiness.

Isadora Bentley follows the rules. Isadora Bentley likes things just so. Isadora Bentley believes that happiness is something that flat-out doesn’t exist in her life—and never will.

As a university researcher, Isadora keeps to herself as much as possible. She avoids the students she’s supposed to befriend and mentor. She stays away from her neighbors and lives her own quiet, organized life in her own quiet, organized apartment. And she will never get involved in a romantic relationship again—especially with another academic. It will be just Isadora and her research. Forever.

But on her thirtieth birthday, Isadora does something completely out of character. The young woman who never does anything “on a whim” makes an impulse purchase of a magazine featuring a silly article detailing “Thirty-One Ways to Be Happy”—which includes everything from smiling at strangers to exercising for endorphins to giving in to your chocolate cravings. Isadora decides to create her own secret research project—proving the writer of the ridiculous piece wrong.

As Isadora gets deeper into her research—and meets a handsome professor along the way—she’s stunned to discover that maybe, just maybe, she’s proving herself wrong. Perhaps there’s actually something to this happiness concept, and possibly there’s something to be said for loosening up and letting life take you somewhere . . . happy.

The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip by Sara Brusvold

About the Book
Aidyn Kelley is talented, ambitious, and ready for a more serious assignment than the fluff pieces she's been getting as a cub reporter for the Kansas City Star.
