Review: Love's Sure Dawn (Eagle Harbor #3) by Naomi Rawlings

About the Book

The bestselling Eagle Harbor Series continues with Book 3, Love’s Sure Dawn.

No matter how hard she tries to help, Rebekah Cummings always ends up causing more problems than she solves. This time, though, things will be different. She'll find a way to pay her family's debts, even if doing so requires leaving Eagle Harbor. Maybe then they'll start treating her as a capable woman who makes her own choices.

Gilbert Sinclair is going to marry an heiress. With his latest business venture sunk at the bottom of Lake Superior, he needs money to replace the steamship he lost, so he heads to Chicago where his father's business connections should land him a suitable wife. Like most things in his meticulously planned life, everything goes as expected—until he discovers Rebekah Cummings working as the new cook on his ship.

Rebekah well remembers the pain she endured the last time she tried trusting Gilbert, and Gilbert can't afford to pursue the love of a working class woman. But they can't stop the forgotten feelings swirling between them—or ignore the sacrifices they'd both have to make for a future together.

"More than just a satisfying love story." Melissa Jagears, award winning Christian author

My Review

Five Stars

The Eagle Harbor Series is quickly becoming one of my favorite series and Love's Sure Dawn is the best one yet! I was so happy to be back in Eagle Harbor and to catch up with all the characters.

I was a bit leery of Gilbert. He wasn't the most likeable character in the previous books. So, it was really nice to get a deeper look at him, to understand where he was coming from and why he acted the way he did. He's a complex and misunderstood guy. I loved seeing him in a new light and he quickly became my favorite character. I've been eager for Rebekah's story since her very first appearance in book one. She's a feisty and stubborn tomboy who often acts without thinking things through. So I wondered who would be her perfect match.

At first, I couldn't see how Rebekah and Gilbert would ever be a good match. They're complete opposites and come from completely different social standings. Then all of a sudden, I realized how absolutely perfect they were for each other. It was really great watching their growth.

The characters in this series face seemingly insurmountable odds, always leaving me to wonder how things could possibly work out. But one of my absolute favorite aspects of these books is Rawlings' brilliant ability at shining a light on God's greatness and showing that anything is possible with Him. I cannot recommend this series highly enough!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and comments are my own honest opinion.

Waiting on Wednesday: Death Overdue: A Haunted Library Mystery by Allison Brook

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that highlights upcoming eagerly anticipated releases.

This week I'm featuring Death Overdue: A Haunted Library Mystery by Allison Brook releasing October 10, 2017.

About the Book

Carrie Singleton is just about done with Clover Ridge, Connecticut until she's offered a job as the head of programs and events at the spooky local library, complete with its own librarian ghost. Her first major event is a program presented by a retired homicide detective, Al Buckley, who claims he knows who murdered Laura Foster, a much-loved part-time library aide who was bludgeoned to death fifteen years earlier. As he invites members of the audience to share stories about Laura, he suddenly keels over and dies.

The medical examiner reveals that poison is what did him in and Carrie feels responsible for having surged forward with the program despite pushback from her director. Driven by guilt, Carrie’s determined to discover who murdered the detective, convinced it’s the same man who killed Laura all those years ago. Luckily for Carrie, she has a friendly, knowledgeable ghost by her side. But as she questions the shadows surrounding Laura's case, disturbing secrets come to light and with each step Carrie takes, she gets closer to ending up like Al.

Now it's due or die for Carrie in Death Overdue the delightful first in a new cozy series by Allison Brook.

Review: Love's Healing Touch by Autumn Macarthur

About the Book

Are some wounds too deep for love to heal?

When nurse Lainie Sullivan’s beloved father dies, she vows to fulfil his retirement ambition — to visit each of the mainland US states on his vintage motorcycle, raising funds for cancer care. But an overnight stop in Sweet Grove, Texas, could stretch into weeks as she waits for repairs on her motorcycle.

The warm welcome and uncomplicated faith of the townsfolk make this place feel like home, healing her faith — and her heart. As does working on her bike with Adam Davis, a wounded warrior she nursed in the military hospital.

But for Adam, a war still rages, as he battles survivor guilt, anger with God, and adapting to the life-long effects of his injuries. His worst scars aren’t the ones on his body but the ones on his heart and soul.

Will Lainie’s love and faith be enough to help him heal, when soon she’ll be moving on?

An emotional story of love, faith, healing, and finding new purpose set in the small Texan town of Sweet Grove, from a USA Today bestselling author. Clean, sweet, and wholesome Christian inspirational romance.

My Review

Four Stars

Love's Healing Touch was my first visit to Sweet Grove, Texas and also, my first book by Autumn Macarthur. It was a very touching and heartwarming story that I greatly enjoyed.

This was a quick read where I was instantly drawn into the characters lives. Adam and Lainie are dealing with a lot. Both are struggling with their faith and have lost trust in God. It was so wonderful to watch their growth and their journey on the way to healing. They were such realistic and authentic characters, it was easy to root for them. The connection and chemistry they had was great!

If you're looking for a sweet and uplifting story, Love's Healing Touch is the book for you. I'm really looking forward to reading more from Macarthur!

I won this book in a giveaway. All thoughts and comments are my own honest opinion.

Book Beginnings + Friday 56: Written in the Stars by Christina Coryell

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading.

Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice and asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your ereader and share a non-spoilery sentence or two.

This week I'm featuring Written in the Stars by Christina Coryell. It just released this Tuesday and OH MY GOODNESS! It's SO good! You can check out my review for it here.

Book Beginning

Wretched, filthy dust.

Brooke had almost forgotten the way it filtered in like it was part of the sunlight itself, peppered everything it touched with a powdery sheen, and drifted in the air so thick she could taste it. Had nearly blocked from her memory the way it formed a cloud that seemed to engulf passing cars like a sienna-colored mist. Not that she had seen any passing cars. Her pearl-white Nissan Roadster was the only vehicle traversing the dirt at present, and the tires grew noisier the farther she traveled down the road, as though voicing their own protest.

Friday 56 (Actually 64% on my Kindle because 56% is full of spoilers)

"She said that the stars are constant," Holly continued. "No matter what's happenin' in our world, they're still there. The bright sun may hide them, or a dark cloud, but that doesn't mean they're gone. Tomorrow they'll be in the same place, waitin' for me to find them again."

About the Book

Roundabout these parts, dirt roads don’t just get you from point A to point B. They intersect to create a maze of life often missed when outsiders drive through a sleepy town. The number on the population sign might seem insignificant, but a few short steps from the beaten path, there’s more than meets the eye.

Look a little closer… That sleek out-of-town convertible is bringing former pageant queen Brooke Langdon back into town for the first time in a decade. She’s dragging nothing with her but the hyphen in her last name. Gatlin Moore is running his tractor along the fence line, spending his days keeping up his parents’ farm instead of living out his dreams in Nashville. The sheriff is pulling into Holly Christian’s driveway, preparing to tell her that her life’s about to crumble. And Hunter Pearce, the guy everyone calls when they need something fixed? He’s racing to Holly’s place too, wondering if things are too broken to put back together.

Welcome to Hope Canyon. This is our backroads story.

Review: The Texas Rancher's New Family by Allie Pleiter

About the Book

A Match Made in Texas

Tess Buckton returns to the Blue Thorn Ranch from Australia, badly needing Texas comfort. But the Outback follows her home when celebrity Aussie horse trainer Cooper Pine rents the ranch next door. The other Buckton siblings are worried Cooper's high profile will upset the idyllic Martins Gap community—but Tess isn't so sure. Cooper is surprisingly down-to-earth and a doting father to his special-needs daughter. But getting close enough to learn his secrets could mean exposing hers, and Tess isn't ready for that—even if Cooper and his matchmaking daughter are just what her heart is yearning for.

My Review

Five Stars

Tess Buckton is back home in Martins Gap, Texas completely heartbroken and humiliated by what happened in Australia. Cooper Pine, one half of the famous Pine Brothers, has moved to Martins Gap hoping to get away from the spotlight. There's an instant connection between the two, but both have had their fair share of hurts. Can they break down the walls surrounding their hearts and possibly find a way to true happiness?

I instantly liked both Tess and Cooper. And Sophie was adorable! The strength she displayed and her positive attitude were super inspiring! A couple of the Buckton siblings were quite concerned about the plans Cooper had for his ranch next door and the tension oozed from the pages.

The Texas Rancher's New Family was another wonderful romance from Allie Pleiter. I read it super fast. I didn't want to put it down and I didn't want it to end. I loved reuniting with the Buckton clan and even though this is the fifth book in the series, it can standalone just fine. I highly recommend!

I received a copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and comments are my own honest opinion.

Welcome to Hope Canyon. This is our backroads story.

My Review

Five Stars

My first introduction to Christina Coryell was her novella, Mowed Over, in the Love at First Laugh box set. I was instantly charmed and knew I had to check out her other stories. And then, when I heard about her new novel I was doubly excited! I'm a big fan of books featuring life in small towns, so I couldn't wait to dive right into WRITTEN IN THE STARS.

I was captivated from the very first page. I was transported to the small town of Hope Canyon, Arkansas, feeling like a silent observer peeking into the lives of these authentic and complex characters. At times, it really did feel as though I was reading about real people in real-life situations. There was such an authentic feel to this novel. Coryell perfectly captured life in a small town where everybody knows everybody and everybody knows everybody else's business, where gossip spreads faster than you know it.

WRITTEN IN THE STARS was one of those books that I just wanted to savor, take my time with, stay with these characters as long as possible. But at the same time, I couldn't help myself but to read as fast as possible to see where the story led to next. And then, before I knew it, I had finished the book. :sad face: It was just so good! I didn't want it to end! Time flew by while I was reading. I became completely caught up in this book! I'd look up at the clock and be shocked by how much time had passed.

I could go on and on about how awesome WRITTEN IN THE STARS was and I seriously can't recommend it highly enough! Go grab a copy for yourself, you won't be sorry! Just be ready to get completely sucked into the lives of these down-to-earth characters! Can't wait for the next one!

I received a copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Favorite Quotes

“If someone were to break in through the back door, her dog Skittles would destroy the place with his weak bladder. Not that a person would try to pull anything roundabout her neck of the woods, where everybody and their brother packed heat.”

“Is that your uppity way of sayin' you want to gossip? 'Cause that's actually frowned upon in these parts. Unless of course you frame your question with 'he needs prayer' at the end, and then you can gossip all you like. Form a chain if need be, so it spreads quicker.”

“She said that the stars are constant,” Holly continued. “No matter what's happenin' in our world, they're still there. The bright sun may hide them, or a dark cloud, but that doesn't mean they're gone. Tomorrow they'll be in the same place, waitin' for me to find them again.”

“Her spirit lifted a little, like the first small spark of a burgeoning fire that might one day turn into a full flame. And as she wondered if she should stir the embers a little, hope settled over her like a haze of smoke.”

Book Beginnings + Friday 56: Count Me In by Mikal Dawn

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading.

Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice and asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your ereader and share a non-spoilery sentence or two.

This week I'm featuring Count Me In by Mikal Dawn

Book Beginning

The little hairs on the back of Allegra Spencer's neck stood at attention. He was behind her. She could feel his presence as sure as she could smell the beans being ground by the barista on the other side of the reclaimed-wood counter.

Friday 56 (56% on my Kindle)

Allegra's face was white as a ghost. Her mouth moved, but no sound came out.

About the Book

Allegra Spencer has been living a careful life. Her safe job as an accountant is bookended by going to church and the gym. Okay, sometimes the gym. Fine. She goes to church. And the coffee shop. She avoids risk at all cost, preferring to stay safe in her cozy condo. Until her accounting firm goes belly up and she's out of a job.

Tyler Hawk had a glorious career as a star NFL tight end. He retired on a high note and now lives a second dream of owning his own business and leading others on extreme outdoor adventures. But he needs help with his books—and his heart. When Allegra takes the job, sparks fly.

It’s a case of safety zone versus danger zone, and in their minds, never the two shall meet.

Review: Logan: A Life After Companion Story by Julie Hall

About the Book

Every warrior has his weakness . . .

There are two sides to ever story; it’s Logan’s turn to tell his.

Logan has it all—friends, popularity, girls—and he’s on the brink of breaking out as a professional surfer. It appears life couldn’t get any better for him, but perfection isn’t turning out to be all he imagined.

When one mistake leads to his untimely arrival in the afterlife, he finds purpose in something greater than himself—becoming a weapon against the evil that lurks on Earth. Believing he’s finally found true peace, his afterlife turns into a nightmare when he’s captured and tortured by the same monsters he hunts and the king of Hell himself.

Broken in mind and body, Logan’s time in captivity leaves him riddled with doubts, harboring guilt, and changed in ways even he doesn’t understand. Until the day he’s assigned the challenging task of training a newbie—a girl who, from the very start, breaks his preconceived notion of what a demon hunter should be.

After meeting the fainting spitfire, the only thing he’s sure of is that his afterlife will never be the same.

LOGAN is a companion novella to the Bestselling LIFE AFTER series. It can be read as a standalone, or as Book 2.5 of the series.

My Review

4.5 Stars

LOGAN is a sort of prequel to the Life After series told from the perspective of... you guessed it... Logan. It was so awesome to get to know more about Logan. He's so mysterious and keeps a lot of himself hidden in the full length books, so I loved getting this peek into his head. I really enjoyed getting a look at what Logan's life was like pre-death and then the beginning of his afterlife. And it was great to see more of his and Kaitlin's friendship.

LOGAN is a part of the Shattered Worlds Box Set and the main reason I purchased the set. It's a great read to hold me over until the release of book three, DOMINION, but it can also be enjoyed even if you haven't read the LIFE AFTER series before. It did take me just a little bit to get into, which was probably just me getting used to Logan's POV. But it really didn't take long before I was reading as fast as I could and then being super sad because it ended.

Favorite Quote

“There was a man,” I began, “ and his sacrifice for all of us is what made the difference."

Top Ten Tuesday: Book Recommendations for People Who Love Fairy Tales

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish.

The Broke and Bookish are back this week! The topic for this week is: Ten book recommendations for ______________. Okay, so I'm gonna admit that I struggled a bit coming up with something for this. When something is so open-ended like that, there's so many options and I kinda freeze with indecision. Apparently I do better with structured topics, lol. But finally I decided to go with Recommendations for People Who Love Fairy Tales. Who doesn't love a good fairy tale? Some of these are well-known, others not so much. Some are based on well-known fairy tales, a couple are a bit more obscure. (And okay, a couple are Edgar Allan Poe retellings, which are definitely not fairy tales, but they are so stellar, I thought I'd include them, too.)

(Melanie Dickerson is a master at fairy tale retellings! I'm featuring two of my favorites from her, but she has, I believe, ten out now and more on the way. The Merchant's Daughter is a Beauty and the Beast retelling, while The Golden Braid is a retelling of Rapunzel.)

by
Melanie Dickerson

Melanie Dickerson

(I couldn't make this list and not mention the Lunar Chronicles. These are SO good and SO unique!)

by
Marissa Meyer

(I've never been a huge fan of Alice in Wonderland, but I've found that I LOVE retellings! The whole Splintered Series is amazing! A.G. Howard never disappoints!)

by
A.G. Howard

(Princess of the Midnight Ball was a charming retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses. The sequel, Princess of Glass, a Cinderella retelling, is just as good as the first!)

Princess of the Midnight Ball

Jessica Day George

(These next two are retellings of EAST OF THE SUN AND WEST OF THE MOON which is a Norwegian fairy tale. I absolutely love this tale and wish there were more retellings for it.)

by
Jessica Day George

by
Sarah Beth Durst

(The Ice Child is a unique and meaningful novelette that I really enjoyed. If you're looking for a quick read, this would be perfect.)

by
Evangeline Denmark

(I'm reluctant to admit this because I'm in the minority with this opinion, but I've never been a fan of The Wizard of Oz. So, when I heard about WICKED, which is the 'untold story of the Wicked Witch of the West', I was hesitant to try it. But oh my goodness, I loved getting the "real" story behind the misunderstood character. I know this book is not for everyone, but it's one of my all-time faves.)

by
Gregory Maguire

(I was super excited when I first heard about DOROTHY MUST DIE. Dorothy is the bad guy in this series and I completely love that! I've only read the prequel NO PLACE LIKE OZ and the first two books, but enjoyed them all.)

by
Danielle Paige

(I'm a big fan of Poe and these retellings by Bethany Griffin are fantastic!)

(If you're interested in a more mature read, Indexing by Seanan McGuire gives an interesting and unique take on fairy tales. Just a word of warning though, this book does contain strong language.)
