Book Beginnings + Friday 56: Kitty's Mix-Tape by Carrie Vaughn

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice and asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your ereader and share a non-spoilery sentence or two.

This week I'm reading Kitty's Mix-Tape by Carrie Vaughn. This is a short story collection, the final installment of the Kitty Norville series. It features lots of stories about Kitty and her friends. It was great revisiting this world again.

The Book Beginning comes from the first story, Kitty Walks On By, Calls Your Name, where Kitty goes to her high school reunion. The Friday 56 quote is the first line from the ninth story, The Arcane Art of Misdirection, which features magician Odysseus Grant and starts at 57% on my Kindle.

About the Book
The final installment of the bestselling Kitty Norville series showcases the paranormal escapades of Carrie Vaughn’s fan-favorite werewolf talk-show host. This engaging short fiction collection - with its own soundtrack for each tale - is sure to delight both existing Kitty fans and anyone who enjoys urban fantasy at its grittiest and best.

“The only urban fantasy world where I want to read every book of the series.” -The Denver Post

“Enough excitement, astonishment, pathos, and victory to satisfy any reader.” -Charlaine Harris, author of the Sookie Stackhouse series

Kitty Norville still can’t stay away from trouble of the supernatural kind.

Everyone’s favorite werewolf DJ is here to mix it up just one last time. Here you will find, or even newly discover, the irrepressible Kitty Norville with friends and enemies alike: Rick the vampire; Jessi Hardin, paranormal detective; Kitty’s husband Ben; Cormac, the bounty hunter; and the villainous Dux Bellorum. These irresistible tales are full of unpredictable twists and turns: lupines experimenting with astronomy, a cheating boxer with preternatural strength, vampires arriving from the Philippines.

As a special treat, author Carrie Vaughn (Bannerless) has provided her own selections for a mix-tape: story notes and songs dedicated to each tale.

So whatever you do, don't miss Kitty before she is gone. . . .

Ben parked, and we sat in the car for what seemed like a very long time, not saying anything, staring grimly ahead as if we were about to go into battle.

The cards had rules, but they could be made to lie.

  1. It's been a while since I last saw someone mention this series. I haven't read any of the books, but I've heard good things about them. I like the quotes.

  2. While this is not my usual genre, I am definitely curious. Thanks for sharing, and here's mine: “THE BOOK OF TWO WAYS”

  3. I featured a short story collection this week too--albeit a different one. :-) I miss Kitty and really need to dive back into the series. This series and the Anita Blake series were the two series that got me hooked on urban fantasy. I hope you enjoy this one! Have a great weekend, Ashley. Stay safe and well.

    1. This series is the one that sparked my love for urban fantasy. Just the idea of a werewolf with a radio talk show was so interesting. I couldn't get enough of it. Thanks for visiting! :)

  5. I tried this one, but couldn't get into it. Maybe this is one of those that you need the gradual build of characters through successive books.

    1. I think that's probably the case. I know longtime fans of the series will love revisiting these characters, but I'm not sure it's a great place to start for people who aren't as familiar with it. Thanks for coming by! Happy reading! :)
