Review: Janushek in Love by Christina Baehr

About the Book
Brik Janushek is nothing if not resilient. But as his time in Ormdale stretches longer than he intended, he begins to wonder if he will recover from the enigmatic woman who has captured his heart. Or could he dare to find a way through the wall that stands between them?

A short story in The Secrets of Ormdale.

Note to readers: This story takes place during the events of Books 4 & 5 in the completed series The Secrets of Ormdale. As such, it is best enjoyed after reading the entire series. It contains moderate spoilers for Book 5 (Valley of Dragons).

MY THOUGHTS

Did I immediately start reading this as soon as I received it? Absolutely! Did I miss some sleep to do so? You bet! And I have absolutely no regrets.

Janushek is one of my favorite characters from the Secrets of Ormdale series, so I was ecstatic for this short story. It did not disappoint. I loved getting to know him better and seeing things from his perspective. And I adored the romance. It was so sweet!

This short story packed a big punch. It’s a must-read for fans of the Secrets of Ormdale series. Be sure to read it after completing the series, though.

Review: The Shapeshifter Drives a Bargain (Tales from Karneesia #3) by Claire Trella Hill

About the Book
A herbalist loses her way in the swamp, only to find herself entrapped by a faefolk lord with a plan.

Tansy finds fulfillment in scouring the swamp near her home for medicinal plants and turning them into remedies. It also gets her out of her family’s bursting-at-the-seams cottage. But when she unexpectedly loses her way, she encounters one of the swamp’s fabled denizens—a powerful faefolk lord. And he won’t let her go.

Aistin must have an heir to inherit and protect his demesne, but in his isolated swamp, he doesn’t have many choices. Now he has a plan for that…and it centers on Tansy.

In order to find her way home again, Tansy may have to bargain.

Sprinkled with elements of Beauty and the Beast and Rumplestiltskin, The Shapeshifter Drives a Bargain is the third cozy fantasy romance novella in the Tales from Karneesia series.

MY THOUGHTS

This was another beautifully written story by Claire Trella Hill. It’s a quick read that I finished in one afternoon. Despite its short length, it didn’t lack a thing. I loved every second of it.

I liked Tansy and her fiery yet sweet attitude. Aistin was a bit of a mystery in the beginning. I was intrigued yet slightly leery of him, but I ended up really liking him in the end. I loved the banter between them. They had me laughing (and swooning) several times.

If you’re looking for a quick and cozy closed-door romantasy, grab a copy of this book. You’ll love it! I highly recommend it!

Review: Evergreen Chase: A Shady Hollow Mystery Short by Juneau Black

About the Book

A Shady Hollow Holiday Short Story

It’s the winter solstice in Shady Hollow, that magical time of year when creatures of all shapes and sizes come together to honor the season and eat as much pie as possible. Reporter Vera Vixen is eager to experience her first holiday in town and is especially looking forward to the unveiling of the solstice tree. But then disaster strikes. The year’s tree—the tallest in the forest—has disappeared without a trace. Can Vera, her best friend, Lenore, and Deputy Orville Braun find the tree and save the season? Or will this year’s solstice be especially dark?

MY THOUGHTS

This cute short story was the perfect way to spend an afternoon. It had all the cozy, Christmassy vibes, which I absolutely adored. I loved getting a peek at the holidays in Shady Hollow.

The mystery was a good one. The town’s special holiday tree was stolen! Since it’s the tallest and biggest tree in the area, there are lots of questions. How was it moved without being seen? Why would someone steal it? And most importantly, who did it? Who would do such a thing? I had my suspicions but wasn’t a hundred percent sure.

If you’re new to this series, this standalone short story is the perfect way to get a quick peek into this world and its characters. If you’re a fan of quirky cozy mysteries, give it a try! I loved it!

Mini Reviews: The Rival Kiss by Jessica Kate & Skullduggery by Beverly Twomey

I have a couple of mini reviews for y'all today. They're both short stories, but that's where the similarities end, lol. One's a contemporary romance, the other is a fantasy featuring a necromancer.

About the Book
This short workplace romance will leave you swooning and eager for more!

Maisie Hastings has an endless list of reasons to be annoyed with high-school-rival-turned-teaching-colleague Harry Latu. The latest: after surprising each other at school late one Saturday night, she discovers his plans to build a rival school. It could threaten the viability of the small private school they've spent their careers in, and shoots to Reason #1 on her Why Harry Is Horrible list. But there's more to Harry's secret plan than she's given him credit for. and when their principal shows up, they both have reasons for not wanting to be discovered.

There's only one good excuse Maisie can improvise of why she'd be here late with Harry - and they'd better make it convincing.

The Rival Kiss is a short romantic prequel to Jessica Kate's full-length 2024 romance Drive You Crazy.

MY THOUGHTS

This was very short, but very fun! Despite the quick introduction, I was already rooting for Harry and Maisie. I loved their fiery dynamic. And I loved that, despite the obvious animosity between them, sparks were flying. Their chemistry was off the charts! I didn’t want this story to end. What a great introduction to the series! I’m really looking forward to visiting Amity Creek again!

About the Book
Down, down to underground. Six feet under. Soil to drown...

Buried beneath the grounds of the College of Magi, The Necromantic Archives are a vast maze of artifacts, magical protections, and carefully preserved secrets. Very few have ever descended to the lowest levels, and even fewer have made it out alive. But when an unexpected death summons the Necromancer back to the College, he must delve into the forbidden alcoves to find the answers he’s long been denied.

Enter the world of The Necromancer’s Apprentice in this prequel short story and meet your mentor.

MY THOUGHTS

This short story has me so excited for more! The worldbuilding was fascinating, the characters intriguing, and the humor spot on. The Void, the necromancer’s familiar, was awesome, and the heist was incredibly entertaining and action-packed. Reading this story was a fun way to spend the afternoon! Review: Falling Down (The Boy in the Iron Box Book 1) by Guillermo del Toro & Chuck Hogan

About the Book
A group of mercenaries on an unsanctioned mission survives a plane crash in whiteout conditions in the Tian Shan mountains. The men are accustomed to danger. Now they’re growing accustomed to fear.

Team leader Liev and his band of survivors are stranded in the bitter winds with little hope of rescue—or outlasting the wolves that have scented blood. In the distance is the apparent sanctuary of an abandoned stone fortress. That an ancient bulwark even exists on this forsaken summit is beyond comprehension. So is what lies on the other side of its walls.

From Academy Award–winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Falling Down, part one of The Boy in the Iron Box, a blood-chilling series of short stories about an ancient secret that was never meant to be unleashed, featuring exclusive interior artwork. Each can be read or listened to in one breathless sitting.

MY THOUGHTS

This was an Amazon First Reads bonus short story. It pulls the reader right into the action, right into the middle of things, and I was hooked! It was action-packed and full of an ominous sense of dread from beginning to end.

It’s a quick read that can be finished in less than an hour, but be warned, this is only the very beginning of a story that ends in a cliffhanger. Which was a bit of a disappointment, but I’m invested and will be checking out the next installment. It felt like the first episode of a TV series.

Just a warning: this was a bit gory, so if you’re sensitive to that, keep that in mind.

Review: The Proper Thing and Other Stories by Seanan McGuire

About the Book
From the end of the world to the beginning, with a nice charcuterie plate to sustain us on the way, it’s time for another journey through the eccentric, eclectic short fiction of Seanan McGuire. From dangerous holidays to the beauty of the library, from the power of cheese to the power of love, this volume will take you from the past to the future, sometimes on the same page.

Learn about the insecurities of the superheroic world, and how hard some people will work to survive the end of absolutely everything. We’ve been waiting for another trip to the store on the corner, where they sell Wensleydale and wishes side by side. Come along now, let’s go.

MY THOUGHTS

This book is hard for me to review. Like with any anthology, there were stories that I absolutely loved and others that just weren't my cup of tea. I will say, though, that even the ones that I didn't like kept me engaged. McGuire has a real talent for pulling the reader into a story, fully enveloping them in it, and making the real world disappear. I really liked that McGuire had an intro before each story. It was nice to get some insight into them. My favorite stories are listed below.

Coafield’s Catalog of Available Apocalypse Events - This was a bit of a “choose your own apocalypse." It was a fun, yet slightly terrifying, way to start the anthology.

Now Rest, My Dear - This was an emotional and whimsical love letter to libraries.

In the Land of Rainbows and Ash - I really enjoyed this one. While it isn’t a 'Wayward Children' story, it very much felt like one.

Heart of Straw - An ordinary Halloween night of trick-or-treating turns out to be anything but ordinary.

Good Night, Sleep Tight - This was another story about the library, only this time, with more bugs. Yikes!

Rise Up, Rise Up, You Children of the Moon - I thought this was one of the best stories in the anthology. It's set in a dystopian world where night and darkness are forbidden. There’s no place for the monsters in the shadows, but the monsters fight back. I loved the connection to Snow White.

Under the Sea of Stars - This story is about the horrors found in the Bolton Strid. I loved the historical setting of this one.

What Everyone Knows - This was an emotional story about Kaiju. I loved it.

So Sharp, So Bright, So Final - A rabies outbreak causes a zombie-like apocalypse. Terrifying because it's not out of the realm of possibility.

Pedestal - This was a superhero story that delved into the cost of celebrity. I really enjoyed this one. I thought her superpower was really interesting and would love to read more set in this world.

The Proper Thing - This was the longest story in the anthology and the best. It’s McGuire at her finest. I'll just say one thing: magic cheese.

I received a copy of this book via NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Review: My True Love Gave to Me by Karen Witemeyer

About the Book
The Twelve Days of Christmas get a romantic Texas twist!

Anna King has pledged her heart to Simeon Shepherd, but her father refuses to grant her hand to the young farmer. Simeon determines to be patient and earn David King's respect over time with hard work and evidence of his ability to provide. However, when a wealthy new suitor arrives in Bethlehem, Texas to woo Anna with her father's support, patience is no longer an option. Simeon has twelve days before Christmas to best his rival and prove once and for all that he is Anna's true love.

A fun, quirky read that is short enough to squeeze into even the busiest holiday schedule.

Available in Kindle Unlimited at time of posting

MY THOUGHTS

This was a very short story, but there was a lot packed into it. I liked Simeon and Anna instantly and was rooting them on to try to figure out how to stop Anna’s dad from forcing her to marry someone else.

I loved Simeon’s family (especially Grandpa Joe). I thought their idea of how to help was really clever, and I liked how it tied into the song.

If you’re looking for a quick Christmas story that gives you all the feels, grab a copy of this one. I loved it!

Review: Unexpected Encounters of a Draconic Kind and Other Stories by Beka Gremikova

About the Book
Encounters. Whether with magic or science, expected or unexpected, they can change our minds, our destinies, even our world…

In this collection of twenty-two short tales, journey across multiple genres alongside various characters, including:

~a mother who gathers dragon scales to provide for her family despite a perilous jungle and her own self-doubt;

~a young half-human, half-mermaid girl on the search for her father with murderous soldiers on her heels;

~an opera singer-turned-ghost-hunter attempting to thwart a Phantom who just won’t stop interfering with her act;

~a family at risk of losing their humanity to the Moon as its magic wreaks a monstrous change within them;

~and an alien on a rescue mission to save her best friend’s children from those who wish them harm.

Full of comedy and tragedy, heartache and hope, monsters and magic, these stories are an encounter that just might change you too…

MY THOUGHTS

These short stories packed a big punch! The author has a talent for bringing forth strong emotions in just a few words. I was left in awe by how much of an emotional impact each of these stories had. Quite a few left me in tears, while others had me laughing out loud. One of the things I loved was that each story had surprising twists and unexpected turns that I never saw coming.

Some of my favorites were: Just a Hench, Change of Heart, The Grave Dancers, Deep Dive, The Mermaid’s Soul, A Taste of Grace, Unexpected Encounters of a Draconic Kind, and Sir Gawain and the Green Thumb. ALL of the stories were great, though. There's not a bad one in the bunch.

These stories are just the right size if you’re looking for a quick read in spare moments, but the collection is also great to binge-read all in one sitting. It's a must-read for fans of fantasy and sci-fi. I highly recommend it!

Unexpected Encounters of a Draconic Kind: Amika has the dangerous job of a dragon scale gatherer. She’s not having much luck this year, but an unexpected encounter might just change her luck. I loved her determination and commitment to her job and her family legacy. This story was very moving.

A Taste of Grace: This is a story of hope, forgiveness, and second chances amidst the struggle of addiction. Another moving and poignant tale.

A Spoonful of Spice: A young girl tries to be helpful by making the food offering by herself. Things don't go as expected. I loved the message of this story. The obvious, safe route isn’t always the best. Sometimes it’s good to take a chance because you never know if something wonderful will come out of it.

Deep Dive: Iris goes skydiving but really should’ve read all of the fine print first. This had a major twist I never saw coming! Loved it!

The Grave Dancers: The world-building here was fantastic; I’d love another story set in this world. One of my favorites of the collection. A bittersweet yet hopeful ghost story.

Mer-child: I really admired Tula. She was such a brave girl who had to endure so much, yet she hoped for more. Strove for more... and went out in search of it.

Tough Crowd: “Laughter heals sooner - but honesty heals truer.” It isn’t all laughs and smiles for Jessmina the jester. This was a really good reminder not to judge others.

Tipsy Turvy Tiger: At a magical circus, a talking tiger has a request for a killer clown.

Just a Hench: This was my favorite story in the collection. It's a surprisingly heartwarming tale of a young woman trying to get a job as a villain’s henchwoman. I’d love more stories about this character or set in this world.

Change of Heart: “You fear the wolf, because that is what you’ve been taught.” This was another favorite of mine. I loved the hauntingly personal way it was written.

Down in Flames: A veteran Magickal Protections Officer is on a mission with an impulsive rookie. I was so intrigued by the drakonix. It was such an interesting creature!

Prince of Bees: Ivan, a Prince who’s always been underestimated, made fun of, and thought to not be good enough, attempts to lift the curse targeting the Honey Princess.

Of Masks and Macarenas: This was a humorous tale that took place at a haunted opera house. Had me laughing out loud.

Retrieval: My heart hurt for the characters in this emotional sci-fi story. I'm so glad there was some hope sprinkled in there.

Tiger Bright: A tiger-shifter reluctantly but bravely goes on an important hunt. This was bittersweet and had a very surprising twist.

Sea Claim: Will the sea accept or reject Galia? Another mermaid story and this one had me bawling my eyes out.

The Perfumers of Qukamar: Shebalik needs help removing a rather potent curse. This story was so vibrant, I could almost smell it!

Sir Gawain and the Green Thumb:
This hilarious reimagining had me laughing out loud. I’d love to read more about Sir Gawain’s gardening misadventures.

The Screwtech Letters: Another funny one, this one told in the style of The Screwtape Letters. A gremlin tries to teach his cousin the art of computer sabotage.

No Man’s Jungle: An arrogant tracker searches the jungle after hearing rumors of monster sightings. This story had such a great twist!

The Wolf at the Door:
This was an emotional, bittersweet, yet highly imaginative Red Riding Hood retelling.

The Mermaid’s Soul: Do mermaids have souls? Ianthe desperately hopes so. This was such a powerful story. Loved it!

I received an advanced copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Review: Criminal Enchantment: An Enchanted, Inc. Short Story by Shanna Swendson

About the Book
Before Katie met Owen, the Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., team already had a job to do.

There’s spellcasting skullduggery at work in Manhattan, and Sam the gargoyle is on the case. This time, the shady spells look awfully familiar, like the work of outcast wizard Phelan Idris. There’s just no real evidence of his involvement, and without that, the MSI team can’t do anything to stop him from wreaking magical havoc in the city. To track the criminal enchantments back to their source, Sam will have to rally his security gargoyle pals, do some old-fashioned sleuthing, and keep his wizard friend Owen Palmer focused on the case instead of on that cute girl he spotted at the bookstore.

See the events that lead up to the beginning of Enchanted, Inc. in this Enchanted Universe novelette.

MY THOUGHTS

This is a prequel to the Enchanted, Inc. series, and after finishing it, I want to go back and reread that whole series! I absolutely loved that this story is told from the perspective of Sam the gargoyle, the chief of security at Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc. He was one of my favorite characters from the series, so that was a ton of fun!

This is a great intro to the series and will appeal to new readers and old alike. This story sets up the first book really well, so there's not a ton of resolution to the mystery surrounding the "shady spells". You'll have to continue the series to see how that unfolds. But, all in all, reading this story was a great way to spend the afternoon. I loved visiting these characters and this world again.

Review: A Novel Escape by S. R. Breaker

About the Book (From Goodreads)
Reading is an excellent escape from reality. But what if... you couldn't escape from your escape?

Astrid loves to read. Astrid made a wish. Now Astrid's stuck in a book.

Cue the evil kelpie. The Armageddon. The feral troll army.

The fantasy realm of fiction is everything Astrid ever hoped for.

Except it's probably going to take her life.

Astrid needs non-fictional guts, determination, and sheer will to survive before she can return to the real world.

But will she even want to?

A fun, fast-paced portal fantasy adventure novella. Perfect for fans of "A Wrinkle in Time" and "The Neverending Story."

Offbeat, easy reading fantasy and science fiction. Check out other books by S. R. Breaker.

MY THOUGHTS

I think every bookworm has probably wondered what it would be like to literally get sucked into the story they're reading. Well, after making a wish that the book she was reading was real, Astrid gets more than she bargained for!

This was fun, fast-paced, and very short. It kinda felt like things had just started when it ended. We're thrown right into the story, and since it's so short, I felt like I was just getting my bearings when it ended. It had a really cool concept, though. I'd love to see it expanded.

Review: The Sun Still Rises: A Charity Anthology

About the Book
Light shines brightest in dark places…

A selfish empress slowly turns to gold. A highschooler's hallucinations reveal a dangerous new world of Faerie. An outcast battles shadow demons to save her people from the plague.

This charity collection of YA fantasy stories celebrates the light found in dark places, just as Lani Forbes once embodied having hope in difficult times. Her spirit shines on through these beautiful, bittersweet tales full of fallen stars and fae princes, werewolves and magic wielders, samurai and smoky skies.

Featuring stories from Ronie Kendig, Jill Williamson, Julie Hall, Carrie Anne Noble, S.D. Grimm, and more!

MY THOUGHTS

This was a beautiful collection of hope-filled short stories honoring the memory of author Lani Forbes, who sadly passed away from cancer. These YA fantasy stories brilliantly showcase finding hope and light in the darkness.

With any collection like this one, I was drawn to some stories more than others, but each one left me feeling encouraged and uplifted. Some of my favorites were Pixie Dust and Princes by Julie Hall (I hope Hall expands or revisits this story because I want more!), Where I'm Supposed to Be by Callie Thomas (if I had to describe this in one word: enchanting), The Evenglow by Cassandra Hamm (this was such an emotional read. I loved it!), Falling Scales by C.M. Banschbach (I want to read more from this author!), and companion stories, The Weaver and the Dragon by Lauren Hildebrand and To Share the Sky by A.C. Williams (I loved the worldbuilding!) The list could keep going, though, because this anthology is full of great stories. There were many authors I was familiar with, but there were quite a few new ones that I'm looking forward to reading more from.

This anthology is sure to uplift the reader and fill them with hope. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Review: Between Friends: A City Between Compilation (The City Between #11) by W.R. Gingell

About the Book
What happened to the tie frog? What is the best way of disposing of vampiric watermelon? Exactly how do you get rid of goblins in the spare room?

Friends and foes, Between and Behind—all the little pieces and curiosities that make up Pet’s new world—are here to be seen and delighted in, and put on the shelf beside books 1-10.

Featuring Cloudy with a Chance of Dropbears, All the Different Shades of Blue, and every other Short Thing formerly found on the WR(ite) Blog, along with previously unpublished novelettes and three new, never-before-seen short stories, this compilation completes the main City Between series.

MY THOUGHTS

I loved this collection! It was so great being back in this world with these wonderfully weird characters. I didn't realize how much I had missed them. I'd read a couple of these stories before, but most of them were new to me. There were even a few stories that take place after the last book in the series! And, oh my goodness, they made me so happy! This collection is a must for any fan of the series.

- Training the Pet - Training the Pet? More like Pet's training the others, lol!

- Pet vs. Vampire - This was really funny. Pet does what she loves best: annoy the vampire! LOL!

- Widdershins to Deiseil - Pet calls Detective Tuatu for advice.

- Zero Sum Game - Pet gets to ask Athelas three questions.

- Cloudy with a Chance of Dropbears - I'd already read this one, but it was just as good the second time. Five-Four-One, a leprechaun, unwillingly gets sent to the human world. The only way to get home is to kill the kid. ... But, then, the dropbears show up...

- North by Tuatu - This was a Tuatu and North story and it just reiterated the fact that I'd LOVE more tales with these two. Tuatu is such a normal guy and North is this otherworldly being, but together they're this weirdly awesome team! And I'm so here for it!

- All the Different Shades of Blue - I'd already read this one, but, again, it was just as good this time. It's a story following Marazul, a hacker and merman, who gets stuck inside a cafe with Pet. So fun!

- Ties That Bind - The tie frog makes an appearance and annoys Athelas. Too funny!

- Watermelon in the Moonlight - Vampiric watermelons? What? This was crazy, weird, and totally awesome.

- Hockey Sticks at Midnight - A very short story about a girl whose items keep going missing.

- Talking Shop - This takes place after the final book in the series. A guy being chased by tentacles seeks solace inside a tailor's shop. This had a very big twist that totally caught me off guard. Loved it!

- Pins and Needles - Ah! Another one that takes place after the series ends, and OMG! There's so much I want to say, but it's all MAJOR spoilers. This was hands down, my favorite story of the bunch.

- Zero Responsibility - This Zero-centric story took me a minute to get into, but I ended up loving it. What a great way to end the collection!

Double Review: Signal Moon by Kate Quinn & My Evil Mother by Margaret Atwood

I received both of these short stories for free through Amazon Prime and thought I'd go ahead and post my thoughts about them together. Signal Moon releases August 1 but is available early through Amazon's First Reads program.

About the Book
From the New York Times bestselling author of The Diamond Eye comes a riveting short story about an impossible connection across two centuries that could make the difference between peace or war.

Yorkshire, 1943. Lily Baines, a bright young debutante increasingly ground down by an endless war, has traded in her white gloves for a set of headphones. It’s her job to intercept enemy naval communications and send them to Bletchley Park for decryption.

One night, she picks up a transmission that isn’t code at all—it’s a cry for help.

An American ship is taking heavy fire in the North Atlantic—but no one else has reported an attack, and the information relayed by the young US officer, Matt Jackson, seems all wrong. The contact that Lily has made on the other end of the radio channel says it’s…2023.

Across an eighty-year gap, Lily and Matt must find a way to help each other: Matt to convince her that the war she’s fighting can still be won, and Lily to help him stave off the war to come. As their connection grows stronger, they both know there’s no telling when time will run out on their inexplicable link.

MY THOUGHTS

I was absolutely riveted by this story. Lily was optimistic and upbeat, and always trying to cheer everyone else up, even though in actuality, she was covering up how terrified she was. She had a very serious job as a WREN. She intercepted live radio communications sent to enemy vessels. One night, while searching the signals, she came across an American's transmission as they faced trouble. But it didn't make any sense... The date the transmitter gave was 80 years in the future... What's going on?

This story had such an intriguing premise. Someone from the 1940s intercepts a radio signal from 2023 and tries to find a way to stop WWIII? Yes, yes, yes! This was right up my alley! It was an extremely quick read that I really enjoyed. It did have some language that didn't seem wholly necessary, but other than that, this was an absolutely stellar read. I'll have to look into this author's other stories.

About the Book
Life is hard enough for a teenage girl in 1950s suburbia without having a mother who may—or may not—be a witch. A single mother at that. Sure, she fits in with her starched dresses, string of pearls, and floral aprons. Then there are the hushed and mystical consultations with neighborhood women in distress. The unsavory, mysterious plants in the flower beds. The divined warning to steer clear of a boyfriend whose fate is certainly doomed. But as the daughter of this bewitching homemaker comes of age and her mother’s claims become more and more outlandish, she begins to question everything she once took for granted.

MY THOUGHTS

I have no idea how to rate this. I had some serious issues with it. There ended up being quite a bit of language at the end and there were some things that were discussed that I really could’ve done without. But it was such a captivatingly quirky and, dare I say it, heartwarming read. I literally couldn't put it down. I had to see where things were going. It kept me entertained and had me laughing in quite a few spots.

I really didn't think I'd end up enjoying it as much as I did. I had only planned to read a few pages and thought I'd probably set it aside to come back to another day, or more than likely forget about it. Man was I wrong! I read it in one sitting in the middle of the night when I couldn't go to sleep.

Review: Touchstones: A Collection by Stephanie Burgis

About the Book
The glass molded to my foot as neatly—and as chillingly—as if it had been made for me.

“This,” I said, “is a most unfortunate coincidence…”

From tongue-in-cheek fairy tale reframings to forbidden Victorian-era romance and contemporary ghosts, dive into an immersive world of magic. Touchstones is a collection of sparkling short fantasy fiction from Stephanie Burgis, including two new stories as well as fourteen short stories and novelettes that have been previously published in magazines and anthologies.

This collection includes The Wrong Foot, Undead Philosophy 101, A Cup of Comfort, Dreaming Harry, Offerings, Dancing in the Dark, The Disastrous Début of Agatha Tremain, The Wildness Inside, The Art of Deception, Midnight, Clasp Hands, Crow, True Names, Good Neighbors, Love, Your Flatmate, and House of Secrets.

MY THOUGHTS

Collections like this one are always hard for me to review. Touchstones contains sixteen short stories written by Stephanie Burgis. There were some stories I enjoyed, but I hate to say it, most of them just weren't my cup of tea. They weren't necessarily bad, but they weren't my kind of thing. I think I've come to the conclusion that I much prefer this author's full-length books over her short stories, so I'll keep that in mind in the future.

I thought I'd go ahead and tell you about the stories I did enjoy. There were two Cinderella retellings, The Wrong Foot, which addressed a plot hole from the original tale that I always questioned, and Midnight, which was extremely short, but entertaining nonetheless. Undead Philosophy 101 featured a college student trying to stop her roommate from becoming a vampire's servant. Dancing in the Dark was a bittersweet, but beautiful story. And A Cup of Comfort takes the reader to a teahouse that holds a surprising secret.

I wanted to add that although this collection wasn't for me, I appreciated the fact that all the stories, even the ones I didn't care for, had some sort of big twist that I never saw coming.

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Review: What Darkness Fears: An Anthology

About the Book
LIGHT DAWNS IN DARKNESS

Even in the darkest night, there is hope. This collection of stories and poems portrays light in the darkness. Multiple authors in various genres take you on a journey from shadow to sunrise, from despair to hope.

Within these pages, you’ll discover a ghost wandering the woodlands, a young man on an adventure choosing the worst sort of companion, a writer facing her own phantasmic characters, a bickering couple beset by a dubious hitchhiker in the middle of the desert, a woman fighting an ominous monster on the high seas, a Headless Henwoman carrying souls to their afterlife, the god of mischief visiting the underworld, and other tales to stir your spirit. So, keep the light on if you wish, but these stories are sure to shine bright enough on their own.

MY THOUGHTS

This was such a great anthology. It features short stories and poems from many different authors, some I was familiar with, but most were new to me. These tales ranged from terrifying to hilarious, but they all followed the same theme. Each story or poem showed that no matter what, the Light can break through even the deepest darknesses.

I'm happy to say that there wasn't a bad story in this bunch. With anthologies like this, there's usually an equal amount of hit or miss for me. Not here. I genuinely enjoyed them all. Some of my favorites were The Headless Henwoman and the Kissing Curse by Kristiana Sfirlea, Trickster Rising by Savannah Jezowski, The Guardian of Maelstrom by Maseeha Seedat, Nightfall by D.A. Randall, and The Night Walkers by Emily Barnett. But really, like I said, every story and poem here was great.

If you're looking for a collection of spooky stories filled with hope, this is a must read. Perfect for Halloween!

MY THOUGHTS

I absolutely loved this story! I was just going to read for a few minutes before bed, but I couldn't put it down. I had to finish it. This quick read had me fully engaged. I loved the eerie vibe and beautiful, vivid writing style that made everything come to life. I slipped into this world and, despite the haunting atmosphere, didn't want to leave. Seriously, the world building was spectacular. I never knew what to expect next. I loved the surprise of it all, the unpredictability of what was gonna happen next. If you enjoy dark fantasy, you're sure to love this story. I highly recommend it!
