Book Beginnings, First Line Friday, & Friday 56: Between Friends: A City Between Compilation (The City Between #11) by W.R. Gingell

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice and asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your ereader and share a non-spoilery sentence or two. I'm also linking up with Carrie at Reading is My Superpower for First Line Friday.

This week I'm featuring Between Friends: A City Between Compilation (The City Between #11) by W.R. Gingell. A spinoff series is coming out very soon, so it was really great visiting this world and these characters again in this short story collection. If you're a fan of clean urban fantasy, definitely check out this series.

About the Book
What happened to the tie frog? What is the best way of disposing of vampiric watermelon? Exactly how do you get rid of goblins in the spare room?

Friends and foes, Between and Behind—all the little pieces and curiosities that make up Pet’s new world—are here to be seen and delighted in, and put on the shelf beside books 1-10.

Featuring Cloudy with a Chance of Dropbears, All the Different Shades of Blue, and every other Short Thing formerly found on the WR(ite) Blog, along with previously unpublished novelettes and three new, never-before-seen short stories, this compilation completes the main City Between series.

Book Beginnings / First Line Friday (From the first short story - Training the Pet)
The house was a mess. There was, in general, some mess to it; this time however, the mess had all the distinct hallmarks of the Pet's influence.

Friday 56 (From the eighth story of the collection - Ties That Bind)
When Athelas went to fetch the paper that morning, there was a tie croaking at him from the welcome mat.

Review: A Whisker Behind (The Worlds Behind Book 1) by W.R. Gingell

About the Book (From Amazon)
Searching for redemption in the shifting realm between the human and fae worlds, not-so-reformed fae steward Athelas seems likely instead to find death, dismemberment, and deadly magic…

Exiled, excommunicated, and with a bounty on his head, Athelas is lying low in Seoul for exactly one reason: he has a wedding to attend. Whether or not he’s welcome is another matter.

Luckily for Athelas, several bodies have turned up with their soft insides gnawed out, whether by magic or Behindkind—and the latest of those bodies is at the very wedding hall he has been staking out. The Behindkind investigators suspect one of Athelas' housemates: YeoWoo, a gumiho with a thirst for revenge and an even greater appetite for soft underbelly than Athelas. To buy herself time, YeoWoo barters alibis with the suspiciously quiet fae sharing her house, but to remain free, she must find the real murderer.

By joining the investigation, Athelas has exactly the chance he needs to prove that he is now a repentant, changed, and selfless fae, bent on atoning for former deeds…no matter how many Behindkind and humans he has to cut through to confirm that impression.

NOTE: A Whisker Behind is the first book in the Worlds Behind series, a 5-book spin-off from the main "City Between" series which occurs several years after those events. Please read the "City Between" books first for a more thorough appreciation of this spin-off (or do what you want—I'm not your boss. Just be aware that there will be reasonably major spoilers).

Available in Kindle Unlimited at time of posting

MY THOUGHTS

Wow, just wow! This was a wild and weirdly wonderful ride. I loved being back in this world, but I loved, even more, the fact that this is the start of Athelas' journey to redemption. To say he's a complicated character is putting it mildly. Even after all the things he did in the City Between Series, there was still a part of me that couldn't help but love him. I enjoyed seeing a different side to him in this book. It was interesting, to say the least, getting a glimpse inside his head. He's still the twisty guy we all know, but it seems as if he's really trying to be better. And I LOVE it!

I will admit that I missed the original cast of characters from the City Between Series, but by the end of this book, I really came to love these new ones. YeoWoo was fascinating. She's gumiho, which I knew nothing about beforehand, so it was really interesting learning about her. She's fierce and fiery and not one to be trifled with.

If you're a fan of the City Between Series, this is a must read! I don't want to say too much more, but wow! I'm so anxious for book two. That ending was a doozy!

Book Beginnings + Friday 56: Between Homes (The City Between #5) by W.R.

This week I'm featuring Between Homes (The City Between #5) by W.R. Gingell . I recently finished this one and LOVED it. The City Between has become one of my favorite ongoing series right now. If you're a fan of urban fantasy, I highly recommend it.

About the Book
G'day. I'm Pet. Not, not Pet--I am a pet.

Well, I was a pet: I used to belong to two fae and a stroppy vampire. Now I'm homeless. I mean, I was always technically homeless, but this time it's different.

I just got used to having some kind of family, and now we're back to everyone wanting to kill each other--and guess who the weak link is?

I'll give you a hint: it's not the vampire, and it's sure as heck not the fae.

Book Beginning
They reckon there are two types of people, that there are two ways of seeing the world. You can see it in a glass-half-full kinda way, or a glass-half-empty kinda way.
That's garbage. There are two ways of seeing the world, all right, but they don't have anything to do with glasses - unless someone out there has managed to make glasses that help you see Between, of course.

Friday 56
Could I get away if I needed to? Where could I run? He'd catch me along the road in no time, and there's no way I'd beat him if I dodged into the tempting patch of mossy Between that existed in the stormwater drain just a drop away.

Do you talk to strangers about books especially when you see someone reading a book?

Not really. I'm too nervous to do that in person. Occasionally, I will online though.

MY THOUGHTS

I loved this collection! It was so great being back in this world with these wonderfully weird characters. I didn't realize how much I had missed them. I'd read a couple of these stories before, but most of them were new to me. There were even a few stories that take place after the last book in the series! And, oh my goodness, they made me so happy! This collection is a must for any fan of the series.

- Training the Pet - Training the Pet? More like Pet's training the others, lol!

- Pet vs. Vampire - This was really funny. Pet does what she loves best: annoy the vampire! LOL!

- Widdershins to Deiseil - Pet calls Detective Tuatu for advice.

- Zero Sum Game - Pet gets to ask Athelas three questions.

- Cloudy with a Chance of Dropbears - I'd already read this one, but it was just as good the second time. Five-Four-One, a leprechaun, unwillingly gets sent to the human world. The only way to get home is to kill the kid. ... But, then, the dropbears show up...

- North by Tuatu - This was a Tuatu and North story and it just reiterated the fact that I'd LOVE more tales with these two. Tuatu is such a normal guy and North is this otherworldly being, but together they're this weirdly awesome team! And I'm so here for it!

- All the Different Shades of Blue - I'd already read this one, but, again, it was just as good this time. It's a story following Marazul, a hacker and merman, who gets stuck inside a cafe with Pet. So fun!

- Ties That Bind - The tie frog makes an appearance and annoys Athelas. Too funny!

- Watermelon in the Moonlight - Vampiric watermelons? What? This was crazy, weird, and totally awesome.

- Hockey Sticks at Midnight - A very short story about a girl whose items keep going missing.

- Talking Shop - This takes place after the final book in the series. A guy being chased by tentacles seeks solace inside a tailor's shop. This had a very big twist that totally caught me off guard. Loved it!

- Pins and Needles - Ah! Another one that takes place after the series ends, and OMG! There's so much I want to say, but it's all MAJOR spoilers. This was hands down, my favorite story of the bunch.

- Zero Responsibility - This Zero-centric story took me a minute to get into, but I ended up loving it. What a great way to end the collection!

Calor (The Nightingale Trilogy Book 1) by J.J. Fischer

About the Book
What if you could edit memories with a single touch?

The world-that-was is gone, lost to everything except living memory . . . but remembering comes at a terrible price. Sixty-two years after the apocalypse, a new society has emerged from the ashes of the old world where highly valued memories are traded and nostalgia is worth dying—and even killing—for.

Enslaved by a cruel master, Sephone Winter is forced to use her rare ability to manipulate memories to numb the darkest secrets of the ruling aristocracy.

Then Lord Adamo appears, speaking of a powerful relic capable of permanently erasing memories and recovering Sephone’s own lost childhood. But not everything about the young lord is as it seems, and soon Sephone must choose between helping Lord Adamo forget his past or journeying deep into the land of Lethe, where the truth about who she really is might finally be revealed . . . and a long desired future restored.

The Nightingale Trilogy is a fantasy transformation of Hans Christian Andersen's beloved 1843 tale The Nightingale, with echoes of the myths of Hades and Persephone.

Maybe Lorenzo, the fiancé who barely paid her any attention in the last two years, has the right idea by planning to escape their world. But can she truly turn her back on her family?

All his life, Lorenzo’s family assumed he would become a priest, but he has different ideas—marrying Sabina and pursuing a career in the law. Despite his morals, he knows at the core he isn’t so unlike his mafiosi father and brothers. How can they rebuild what has so long been neglected and do it in the shadow of the dark empire of the Mafia?

The Emperor's Aeronaut by Shelley Adina & R.E. Scott

About the Book
In 1819, France is surrounded by armies. With Russia in the north, the Karlsruhe Confederacy in the east, and a pirate kingdom in the south, Napoleon cannot break out, nor can the English Navy seem to break in. Europe teeters on the edge of a sword. Whichever side rules the air will win.

Celeste Blanchard, daughter of the Emperor’s disgraced Air Minister, is running out of time to develop an air ship that can carry his armies to England and restore her mother to glory. But on a daring and desperate test flight, she is blown off course … and washes up, half drowned, on the shores of Cornwall, in the heart of enemy territory.

Loveday Penhale, cosseted daughter of gentry, has her own inventions to build, even as pressure mounts to behave like a proper young lady and seek a husband instead of a design for a high-pressure steam engine. But when Arthur Trevelyan, heir to the neighboring estate, Gwynn Place, asks for her help in rescuing an unconscious young woman on the beach, Loveday discovers an aeronaut and an inventor as skilled as she is. Between them, a friendship blossoms, and Loveday wonders if they might even pull off the impossible and invent an air ship that will catch the eye of the Tinkering Prince Regent, who has offered a prize to anyone who can help England break the impasse. Celeste’s loyalties are torn in two. If she is caught working secretly for France, she will lose her friend, the love of an honorable man—and her life. But if Napoleon learns she has betrayed him, she will be executed on sight.

Can friendship prevail in the face of war? Or is there a third solution—one where everything hinges on the bravery and daring of a Cornish debutante and the Emperor’s aeronaut?

Be the Serpent (October Daye #16) by Seanan McGuire

About the Book
October Daye is finally something she never expected to be: married. All the trials and turmoils and terrors of a hero’s life have done very little to prepare her for the expectation that she will actually share her life with someone else, the good parts and the bad ones alike, not just allow them to dabble around the edges in the things she wants to share. But with an official break from hero duties from the Queen in the Mists, and her family wholly on board with this new version of “normal,” she’s doing her best to adjust.

It isn’t always easy, but she’s a hero, right? She’s done harder.

Until an old friend and ally turns out to have been an enemy in disguise for this entire time, and October’s brief respite turns into a battle for her life, her community, and everything she has ever believed to be true.

The debts of the Broken Ride are coming due, and whether she incurred them or not, she’s going to be the one who has to pay.

Beyond the Filigree Wall by Melissa Wright

About the Book
A dark curse. A deadly secret. The ill-fated girl at the heart of both.

Antonetta Ostwind is about to get everything she’s ever wanted. If all goes to plan, she’ll end the fae, steal back what was stolen, and win the post she’s dreamed of since she was a girl.

There’s just one problem. His name is Gideon Alexander.

Gideon holds the key to her coveted post. He’s fantastic with a sword, looks amazing in uniform, and commands even the adoration of his great, beastly dog. He’s living the life Etta needs.

Gideon doesn’t believe Etta should have any of it. In fact, he’s planning to make sure she never does. And that’s a real problem, because if Etta can’t take her post as marshal, how can she have her vengeance and save the kingdom from the prince of the fae?

Slip into clean, slow-burn romance with a properly stabby heroine and the low commitment of a standalone series in this light regency fantasy romp for fans of Enchantment of Ravens and Little Thieves.

Book Beginnings + Friday 56: Between Kings (The City Between #10) by W.R.

This week I'm featuring Between Kings, the conclusion to the City Between series by W.R. Gingell.

About the Book
G’day. I’m Pet. Heirling. Biter of fae lords. Trouble.

I have a lot of names these days—including my own, real name. Unfortunately for me, someone else knows that name too; not to mention the names of my other heirling friends. Now those heirling friends have disappeared, stolen by the current King Behind for a fight to the death where only one contender to the throne remains.

The rules say there’s no way in and only one way out of that fight, but I’ve always preferred to work outside the rules. I just have to trust my friends to help each other stay alive long enough for me to get them out—without becoming a contender for the throne myself.

Because one thing is for sure: I am absolutely not planning on being the next King Behind.

Book Beginnings
There are some things in life that you have to learn for yourself. You know: how to make the perfect cup of coffee; how to step between the layers of the worlds without getting stuck somewhere you don't want to be; who you should trust and who you definitely shouldn't. That sort of thing.

Friday 56
"I'm no more the villain of the piece than you are the heroine: everything is a matter of perspective in this life."

This week I'm featuring Between Decisions (The City Between #8) by W.R. Gingell.

About the Book
Life is complicated.

I mean, life has always been complicated, but there’s a difference between monsters-are-trying-to-kill-you complications and monsters-are-in-love-with-you complications. I’m still not sure which is more dangerous.

G’day. I’m Pet. Two-thirds of a pet, anyway: the vampire isn’t claiming ownership these days, but he’s definitely encroaching. On the list of other encroaching complications is the threat of heirling trials, a certain fae lord, and a mysterious librarian—not to mention the thing that’s killing people on Hobart’s waterfront…

One day, I’ll have a normal life. Today is not that day.

Book Beginnings
Housemates can be a handful. Mine more than most, but that's to be expected when two are fae and one's a vampire.

Friday 56
"Don't know how you lot lived without me," I said. "Isn't it fun when all the stuff you thought you knew might not be true?"

About the Book
Two fae is company, but a company of fae is trouble.

Which is exactly what we’ve got. Trouble, I mean. Well, and fae. Lots of fae.

Something or someone is stalking and killing high-level fae around Hobart—tearing out hearts and leaving a trail of bloody bodies behind. Fae don’t like it when they’re the ones getting killed, so of course they came to hire my owners.

Owners, you ask?

Hi. I’m Pet. No, that’s not my name. I am a pet.

My owners? They’re fae. Well, two fae and one stroppy vampire.

Welcome to the world Between.

Book Beginnings + Friday 56: Between Jobs (The City Between #1) by W.R.

This week I'm featuring Between Jobs (The City Between #1) by W.R. Gingell. It's a really great urban fantasy. I got it for free on Amazon a few weeks ago and didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did.

About the Book
When you get up in the morning, the last thing you expect is to see a murdered guy hanging outside your window. Things like that tend to draw the attention of the local police, and when you’re squatting in your parents’ old house until you can afford to buy it, another thing you can’t afford is the attention of the cops.

Oh yeah. Hi. My name is Pet.

It’s not my real name, but it’s the only one you’re getting. Things like names are important these days.

And it’s not so much that I’m Pet.

I’m a pet.

A human pet: I belong to the two Behindkind fae and the pouty vampire who just moved into my house. It’s not weird, I promise—well, it’s weird, yeah. But it’s not weird weird, you know?

Book Beginning
Hi. My name is Pet.

Friday 56
I fell against the bannisters as I came to the top of the stairs, my legs briefly giving way beneath me. I couldn't stop, though. Not if I didn't want the goblins to drag me back into the coldness of Between, far away from the sunlight of the human world.

Review: Between Frames (The City Between #4) by W.R. Gingell

About the Book
Two fae is company, but a company of fae is trouble.

Which is exactly what we’ve got. Trouble, I mean. Well, and fae. Lots of fae.

My owners? They’re fae. Well, two fae and one stroppy vampire.

Welcome to the world Between.

My Thoughts

Between Frames was another awesome addition to this series! It's book four in the City Between series and while there's some recaps, I'd still definitely recommend starting with book one.

Pet is back along with her three psychos and this time they're investigating a recent string of fae murders. There's so much going on in this book. There's some enlightening reveals. Lots of interesting information is brought up. And then, the ending! Argh! Why? I need the next book now!

At the beginning of this series, JinYeong was my least favorite character. But with each progressive book, I've liked him more and more. To the point that with this book, he's become my absolute favorite. His snark is hilarious. The way him and Pet bicker back and forth, their teasing, the way they push each other's buttons, is so amusing. I can't get enough of him now.

This is quickly becoming my favorite series and this installment further cemented that fact. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys urban fantasy.

About the Book
Don’t get too close to humans.

That’s rule number one. Well, it is if you’re an emotionally constipated fae lord. As far as I’m concerned, the vampire could do a better job of keeping his distance, but he’s never been that good at following the rules.

G’day. I’m Pet. Schrödinger’s Pet, these days; depends who’s asking.

I’m human, but when you hang around with enough Behindkind, it starts getting dangerous for the other humans around you. Humans like my friend Morgana. I tried to stay away, but now she needs my help and don’t get too close to humans isn’t exactly gunna cut it anymore.

I’ve got the feeling I’m about to find out why it’s such a bad idea.

Book Beginning
Change is a funny thing. Sometimes it creeps up on you like someone's flamin' pong of a cologne, overtaking the room in miniscule, unseen increments until it's in your lungs and hair and clothes, tinging the air in the room with a faint blue cast.

Friday 56
Maybe the idea of meeting the murderer out on the street left me more uneasy than I thought, because when I left Morgana's room I could have sworn a dark shadow flitted up the hall from the direction of the stairs heading for the roof.

How do you keep track of books you will be reviewing or reading?

I have a notepad where I write down the books I receive for review. I make sure to include the release date and other important information. I keep it on my desk in plain sight so I'll see it everyday and won't forget about them. And then I cross them off the list once I'm finished and I've got my review up and everything.

Goodreads also really helps me keep track of all of my books. I have pretty detailed shelves so it's easy to find books in certain genres when I'm in the mood for them.

Book Beginnings + Friday 56: Between Family (The City Between #9) by W.R.

This week I'm featuring Between Family (The City Between #9) by W.R. Gingell.

About the Book
When someone tries to threaten me by telling me they know my name, I take that personally.

G’day. I’m not really a pet anymore, but you might as well keep calling me Pet. It’s not like I’m gunna tell you my name anyway. And if I sound stroppy, well, I am. First, I was threatened. Now, someone has cut off my house from the human world and left my emotional support vampire on the human side. On the inside, it’s just me and an emotionally compromised fae; outside, a closed arena in the world Behind, where everyone is out to kill us and a few of that everyone might actually be capable of it.

Yep. The Heirling Trials have begun, and it seems like it’s either be king or be dead when it comes to the world Behind…

Book Beginnings
Life has come to a pretty mess when you're starting to get paranoid about why you're still alive.
Don't get me wrong; I'm glad I'm alive. I'd just like to know why.
I know, I know; that sounds weird. Let me explain.

Friday 56
"I feel like it's a bad idea to go out again," I said slowly, giving voice to thoughts I didn't quite understand. "Not that it's a bad idea to make sure your parents are okay, but it feels like stuff is closing in on us, and I don't know what direction it's closing in on us from. I don't like it. I don't like that Zero's dad is in here, either."

Book Beginnings + Friday 56: Between Cases (The City Between #7) by W.R.

This week I'm featuring Between Cases (The City Between #7) by W.R. Gingell. This is such a fun urban fantasy series and this installment is one of my favorites of the bunch.

About the Book
G’day. I’m still here. Still Pet.

Well, I’m only two thirds of a Pet these days, but you might as well call me Pet anyway. Everyone does: everyone but the vampire, that is.

Life is more unbalanced these days—cases are cutting closer to home than usual. I thought I was the only one, but there are others like me: kids whose parents were murdered just like mine. Stuff that never fit into place before is beginning fall into place.

And my psychos are getting really weird. I mean, they’ve always been weird, but now they’re getting weirder.

Why would a fae lord decide to collaborate with humans?

Why has the fae steward started sneaking out at night?

And why is the vampire reading romance novels?

Book Beginnings
It's funny how perception changes stuff. I've been a pet to two fae and a vampire for more than a year now, and although my perception of their feelings toward me has run the gamut from an idea that they barely tolerate me to a feeling that they might actually care about me just enough to make a few changes about the place, it would never have occurred to me to think it would go any further than that.

Friday 56
One of these days, I'd be able to walk down the street without being followed. That's what I told myself, anyway.

Can't Wait Wednesday: Between Walls (The City Between #6) by W.R Gingell

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week I'm featuring Between Walls (The City Between #6) by W.R Gingell releasing May 31.

About the Book
Don’t get too close to humans.

That’s rule number one. Well, it is if you’re an emotionally constipated fae lord. As far as I’m concerned, the vampire could do a better job of keeping his distance, but he’s never been that good at following the rules.

Why I Need It
This is one of my favorite urban fantasy series right now. It's set in Tasmania and has a cast of hilarious, quirky, mischievous, and mysterious characters that I can't get enough of. You never know what's gonna happen next. I can't wait to find out what kind of trouble they find themselves in this time.

Review: Between Shifts (The City Between #2) by W.R. Gingell

About the Book
There’s a body beneath the skip bins. Fae on the forklift. A vampire in the manager’s office. And there’s definitely something skeevy going on in the locker rooms.

Hi. I’m Pet. Well, not exactly Pet. I am a pet.

I was meant to stay out of it, but somebody’s gotta do something when humans are being killed by Behindkind creatures.

Lucky for me, my owners are just as dangerous and inhuman as the bad guys...

…maybe more.

My Thoughts

Between Shifts was so much fun! It's the second book in The City Between series and was another wonderfully weird tale. I can't get enough of this crazy world and quirky characters.

Pet and her affectionately named “three psychos” are back and trying to solve a string of murders that have happened near the supermarket they frequent. The mystery was really well done. I had my suspicions, but wasn't certain until just before the reveal.

One of the things I've really loved about this series is that it's a clean read. There's no bad language or steamy scenes which is often hard to find in this favorite genre of mine. It's something I'd happily recommend to everyone who enjoys this type of story. Definitely start with book one though!

Can't Wait Wednesday: Between Kings (The City Between #10) by W.R. Gingell

This week I'm featuring Between Kings (The City Between #10) by W.R. Gingell releasing December 31. I'm kinda sad that this is the last book in the series. I can't believe this is the end. I've loved this series, and the characters, so much.

Review: Behind Closed Doors (The Worlds Behind Book 2) W.R. Gingell

About the Book
When is a curse not a curse? How does a house become a prison? Why is a reformed murderer the only hope for a far-too-easily injured boy?

Athelas has always been opposed to having a small, possibly-cursed Australian boy in the kitchen. When that small boy disappears, however, and Athelas’ housekeeper Camellia strongly encourages him to do something about it, he finds himself wavering.

YeoWoo wants nothing to do with the disappearing Harrow, cursed or otherwise. Caught up with her own investigation and preparations for revenge, she would prefer her housemates to remain unseen and unheard. Entirely absent is even better.

But Athelas and YeoWoo have something in common: they both tread warily when it comes to their housekeeper, who runs the house with a tea-scented, magic-laced rod of iron. Camellia holds the key to Athelas’ pretensions of reformation being accepted—and blames him for Harrow’s disappearance. And she is determined to save Harrow, no matter what it takes.

Life as a reformed murderer would be so much easier if the process didn’t include so much…reformation.

MY THOUGHTS

I didn't think it was possible, but this was even better than the first book. After that cliffhanger ending, I couldn't wait to dive into this one. Just as I've come to expect from Gingell's stories, it was a fun, weird, twisty, fast-paced ride that I couldn't read quickly enough.

I don't want to spoil anything, so I'm gonna try to be careful here. I will say that I loved that we got to see more of some favorite characters from the City Between series. And I liked learning more about Athelas' past, heartbreaking though it was. And I loved watching him try to be a better person. He's still the same twisty fae we all love, but he's working towards redemption, and I'm loving it. Camellia has to be one of the most intriguing characters ever. I need to know more of her story!

I can't say enough good things about this book. I highly recommend it to fans of urban fantasy, but just a warning, this isn't a standalone. It's closely tied to the City Between series, so it'd be best to start there.
