This week I'm featuring a steampunk retelling of Sleeping Beauty, Kiss of the Spindle by Nancy Campbell Allen.
About the Book
Doctor Isla Cooper is cursed. Literally. Each night, at the stroke of midnight she falls into a death-like sleep from which she cannot be awakened for six hours. To make it worse, the curse has an expiration date--after a year, it becomes permanent. And the year is almost up.In a desperate attempt to find Malette--the witch who cursed her--Isla blackmails her way onto Daniel Pickett's private airship bound for the Caribbean, only to discover she's traveling with three illegal shapeshifters and the despicable Nigel Crowe, a government official determined to hunt down and exterminate every shapeshifter in England. Isla and Daniel must work together to keep the identities of the shapeshifters hidden while coming to terms with their own hidden secrets, and their blossoming attraction to each other.
Filled with suspense, intrigue, and plenty of romance, Kiss of the Spindle is steampunk Sleeping Beauty story. It is a race against the clock as Isla and Daniel try to hunt down the elusive Malette before Isla's death-like sleep becomes permanent.
Book Beginning
Isla Elizabeth Cooper extended her hand toward the airship ticket agent. "If you don't have any flights leaving for the Caribbean immediately, return my passport and I'll find another way."
Friday 56
Something roared and split the night behind him, a shell shooting into the sky and setting his pulse racing along with it. Without thought, he wrapped Isla and took her to the ground, monkey and all, and shielded them with his body.

Do you have a reading challenge for 2020?
I'm participating in the Goodreads Reading Challenge. I'm hoping to read at least 100 books. I might up the number if I see that I'm gonna hit that number early though.
What have you been reading lately?
Love the descriptions in your 56 snippet! Best of luck with your reading challenge this year, and happy reading. :3
ReplyDeleteHere's my Friday post.
Thanks for coming by, Sammie! Happy reading! :)
DeleteOh, yes, great snippets. Thanks for sharing, and here's mine: “THE VANISHING”
ReplyDeleteThanks for the visit, Laurel-Rain! Happy weekend! :)
DeleteI loved the snippets from Kiss of the Spindle. I need to add that to my wish list and fast! I hope you are enjoying it, Ashley.
ReplyDeleteI didn't list the Goodreads challenge in my response to the book blogger hop question, but I did sign up for it. I chose a ridiculously low number for me just because. So, I don't know that it counts as a challenge I my case. Good luck with your challenge!
I can probably read more than 100 books this year but I didn't want to put the pressure on myself. It stresses me out when I look on Goodreads and see "X number of books behind", lol. Thanks for stopping by! Hope you have a lovely weekend! :)
DeleteI love the monkey!
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining in on another year of Book Beginnings!
The monkey is quite a character, lol! Thanks for hosting, Gillion! Have a great weekend! :)
DeleteGreat snippets for sure, and I like that cover too! Happy weekend!

DeleteI love the idea of a book with a curse! Sounds like a great story. Thanks for sharing it. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's so much fun and such a unique twist on the original fairytale. Thanks for coming by, Lori! Happy reading! :)
DeleteI'm going reading challenge free this year! Kiss of the Spindle sounds like fun. Let me know if you like it as much as Beauty and the Clockwork Beast. :)
ReplyDeleteI think it's just as good. It has a bit of a different feel to it than Beauty and the Clockwork Beast. Maybe because the majority of it is on an airship. I really enjoyed it though. Lots of fun! Thanks for stopping by, Lark! Happy weekend! :)
DeleteI hope to read 100 books, also. Good luck. My book: On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous
ReplyDeleteGood luck to you, too, Anne! Thanks for visiting! Have a great weekend! :)
