Top Ten Tuesday: Bookish Resolutions

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

The topic for this week is: Bookish Resolutions/Goals. I'm not the type of person that makes New Year's Resolutions, so this was not the easiest topic for me. But I finally came up with a few things that I hope I'll be able to do this year.

Read more Fantasy/Paranormal Books. These have always been my favorite genres and last year I mostly stuck with reading Contemporary/Historical novels. This year I'm hoping to find my way back to reading more of these books.

Quality over Quantity. I don't want to stress as much on the number of books I read or how fast/slow I'm reading them. Last year I barely made my Goodreads Reading Challenge goal, so this year I've set my goal lower and am hoping to just enjoy the books I read.

Reread a few books. Last year I wanted to reread quite a few of my favorite books, but felt like I didn't have the time to do that. This year, I'm hoping to find the time to reread at least a few.

Try to curb my spending. I don't want to admit how much I spent on books last year. So I'm gonna try to not spend quite as much this year. (But who am I kidding? I'm more than likely gonna fail this one, lol.)

Don't overcommit on books for review. Last year I said 'Yes' to pretty much every review opportunity. And I loved all those books, but I became very overwhelmed!

Read some longer books. Last year I got in the habit of reading a lot of novellas. And I really enjoyed them! They are great for when I only have a short amount of time to read. But I'm hoping this year I'll be able to read some long books, too. I have some HUGE books that have been on my TBR list for a while that I've been dying to read. ... which leads me to my next resolution ...

Read some books that I've had on my TBR list for a while. My TBR pile is out of control and I keep adding to it. (So many amazing books out there!) I really need to try to read some books that I've had for a while.

What are some of your bookish resolutions for this year? I'd love to hear about them!

  1. Reading more books on my bookshelf TBR (vs my review book TBR) is something I'd really like to improve on - and it seems a popular goal for this week's list of book resolutions. I also love your goal of not over-committing to review books (this is something I am better at, but can still improve on) and also the "quality over quantity" rule.

...I'm also one who believes we should also know what we like, with the odd new-to-me-genre/author thrown in now and again. For me, it doesn't work to try to read a book that isn't suited for my reading tastes because I "force" myself to read a book. That then takes so much joy out of reading.

Great list, Ashley! I hope you are able to accomplish these goals. :)

    1. It does take the joy out of reading when I have to force myself to read a book, too. It makes me procrastinate and find other things to do than read. Which is no fun at all. Hopefully we'll both be reading tons of amazing books this year! Thanks for coming by, Rissi! :)

  2. Some great goals. I am with you on needing to make more time to reread. Yet something always comes in the way. And I sometimes let longer books slide to the side as well. Not this year hopefully!

    1. I have a huge book by one of my favorite authors just sitting in my TBR pile. The size is so daunting, but I know once I pick it up I'm gonna enjoy it. I just have to get over that mental hurdle of 'oh-my-gosh-this-is-too-big' fear. Thanks for visiting, Annemieke! :)

  3. I read a lot of novella last year too. I was good because I got a lot of variety but I've gotten out of the habit of reading longer books. Best of luck with your resolutions!

    1. I love novellas. They're so great for when I need to read something quick, but I got into the habit of only reading novellas so I'd have at least two reviews a week on my blog. I've realized there's no way that I can keep up that pace and am not gonna worry so much about how many I'm reading. I'm just gonna enjoy what I'm reading, even if it takes me a little while to read it.

  4. It's always good to clear out your TBR list sometimes. Good luck with that!

  5. I also really need to commit to that TBR pile this year. I've cut my physical TBR down to just under 100 books and I really don't want it to climb back up into the IMPOSSIBLE HEIGHTS it had become before. Here is my TTT if you fancy a read:

    1. I have over 2000 books on my TBR list. Granted, a lot of them were free books I got for my Kindle, but my goodness, it's daunting! Thanks for stopping by, Lauren! :)

    1. That seems to be a common goal. Hopefully, we can all keep that resolution. Thanks for visiting! :)

  7. All of your goals sound great! I love rereading books and have really all my life. In our enthusiasm for the 'new', we often forget the 'tried and true'. Good luck!

    1. Yes, so true! There's a few books that I've lost count how many times I've read. They're just so good and it's so comforting to go back to those characters and places! Such a great feeling! Thanks for coming by, Kay! :)

  8. I love long books but haven't read any lately. Maybe I should join you on that goal.

  9. Reading more books from my TBR is definitely the goal that I want to accomplish this year. My TBR is seriously getting out of control :P
I hope you accomplish all of your goals this year :)

  10. I'm glad to see that many of the bloggers are going to take it a bit easier this year. That might mean more NOs to reviews, but pushing it will take the enjoyment out of the work. (it will feel like work!)

I hope you meet these goals!

    1. I feel so horrible when I say no, but I don't want to get burned out. It's such a dilemma because there's just so many amazing books out there and not nearly enough time for all of them. Thanks for stopping by, Debra! :)

  11. Isn't it so hard to say no to requests? These sound like some good resolutions, though. Have a good year in blogging!
