Book Beginnings, First Line Friday, & Friday 56: Leave the Lights On (True Crime Junkies #5) by Christy Barritt

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. I'm also linking up with Carrie at Reading is My Superpower for First Line Friday. Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice and asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your ereader and share a non-spoilery sentence or two. Freda is taking a hiatus right now, but Anne over at My Head is Full of Books has taken over in the meantime.

This week I'm featuring Leave the Lights On (True Crime Junkies #5) by Christy Barritt. Yep, ANOTHER Christy Barritt book, lol. I've really been enjoying this series. It's suspenseful and full of twists.

About the Book
First the lights go out . . . then they die.

The body count is rising. Six murder victims. The only connection? An X carved into the dead person’s chest. When the family of one of the victims asks the Artic Circle Murder Club to investigate, the team dives into their toughest case yet.

Stopping the murders isn’t the team’s only challenge. When Duke McAllister sees his teammate Andi Slade dodging the cops, he knows she must be in deep trouble. But Andi isn’t the only one on her team on thin ice. Trouble seems to be following them all.

With more murders making the headlines, the threat level reaches an all-time high. The end game has begun. The clock is ticking, and disaster looms near. Will they stop the killer before the deadly grand finale? Or will the lights go out one final time?

Book Beginnings / First Line Friday
Nicole Windsor paused in the bathroom.
She'd just started running water in the tub, but it took forever for the water to warm.
As she waited, the sound of liquid rushing through the pipes roared so loudly it nearly obstructed any other noises.
Nearly.

Friday 56
She wasn't sure what tomorrow was going to look like.
But this wasn't going to be the end of her. She promised herself that.

Review: Trapped in Yosemite by Dana Mentink

About the Book
When a massive earthquake levels the region, secrets and unknown dangers are exposed…

The ground in still-icy Yosemite National Park isn’t stable, and K-9 handler Von Sharpe fears the worst. But his worries are pushed aside when he sees an SUV viciously forced off the road…with his ex-fiancée at the wheel. It’s only when Stella Rivers steps out of the vehicle that the very ground under their feet cracks and breaks with the onslaught of a terrifying earthquake.

When her meeting with a mysterious client is ambushed, Stella witnesses the man being gunned down by a sniper and becomes a target herself. With the threat of aftershocks triggering landslides and floods, the new mom has no choice but to run to save her baby girl—even if it means teaming up with the man who has no idea he fathered her child.

Trapped in a dangerously unstable wilderness with a killer closing in, Von and Stella are running out of time to get to safety. And every fissure reveals a new secret that will shake them to their foundation…

MY THOUGHTS

What an exciting and action-packed story! I was hooked right at the beginning and couldn’t read fast enough. Danger was coming from every direction. It seemed like anything that could go wrong did go wrong. Whether it was a massive earthquake, powerful aftershocks, freezing temperatures, a snowstorm, or a murderer, there was never a dull moment. My anxiety was high and just kept climbing.

I liked Stella and Von. They were realistically flawed, and while they had a lot to overcome regarding their past relationship, I was rooting for them to work things out. It was obvious that they still cared for each other. I thought Bear was awesome, and I really enjoyed seeing the bond between him and Von. I hope this is the beginning of a series because there are a couple of characters I’d love to read more about.

I really enjoyed the vivid descriptions of Yosemite. I’ve never had a chance to visit, but now it feels like I have. I love when an author can transport me to a setting like that.

This was a thrill ride from start to finish, and I enjoyed every second. If you’re a fan of action-packed romantic suspense, you’ll love this book. I highly recommend it!

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Stella Rivers scoured the dense shrubbery like she'd been doing for the past hour as if the branches might somehow reach out and snatch her van off the mountain road. Ridiculous, but the isolation raked her nerves.

Ava is determined to keep everyone protected, even at the cost of her own safety. She explores dangerous aspects of her new Mentalist abilities—against Elm’s dire warnings.

Tensions escalate when a new visitor arrives claiming to know a way out of the barrier. While this may be the only way to escape the Benefactors, what awaits them on the outside? Will they gain allies or make an entirely new set of enemies?

MY THOUGHTS

I devoured this book. It was compelling, unique, and fast-paced. It's been well over a year since I read Vivid, book one, so while it took me a little while to get my bearings, once I did, I was fully invested and glued to the pages.

I enjoyed seeing the characters’ growth, and I loved that the worldbuilding became even more fleshed out. A lot happened in this book. There were some big revelations and twists that I didn’t see coming. I was surprised multiple times by the turn of events, and I was shocked by that cliffhanger ending. The next book can’t come out soon enough! This isn’t a standalone, so be sure to start with book one.

Review: Rocky Road (Sons of Scandal #2) by Becky Wade

About the Book
Christy Award Hall of Fame Author

FBI Agent Jude Camden handles every aspect of his job with by-the-book professionalism. There's no reason why his latest assignment—which calls for him to pose as the boyfriend of perfumer Gemma Clare—should be any different.

Except Gemma is different. She's creative, bold, and feisty. And as soon as she meets Jude, she wants to loosen him up, wrinkle his perfect shirts, and test every ounce of his towering self-control.

The FBI has an iron-clad rule against romances between those working together on operations. Jude's never met a rule he didn't respect. But adhering to this one is going to be tough because, as time goes by, he finds Gemma more and more irresistible.

Buckle up! It's going to be a rocky road.

Escape to Maine for this swoon-worthy "fake romance"! Banter, humor, perfume, and a mystery from the past intertwine in this sweet Sons of Scandal love story.

MY THOUGHTS

What a great fake dating romance! This was one of my most anticipated releases of the year. I adored the first book, and this sequel did not disappoint. It features wonderful characters, strong family dynamics, lots of laughs, some serious moments, suspense, mystery, and so much more! I enjoyed it so much!

I loved Jude. He’s a serious, no-nonsense, rule-following kind of guy who has a heart of gold. He’s the grumpy to Gemma’s sunshine. Their first meeting was a hilarious misunderstanding that had me literally laughing out loud. I liked Gemma instantly. She had a joyfulness about her that was contagious. Even when things were tough, she kept a level head, which I admired. I really enjoyed getting to know her family. I especially loved, and was completely invested in, the mystery surrounding her great-grandmother.

I had such a great time reading this book and am very much looking forward to the next in the series. This could technically be read as a stand-alone, but I’d still recommend starting with book one.

I received a copy of this book via NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Review: While the City Sleeps by Elizabeth Camden

About the Book
Amid the hushed city, two hearts must navigate danger and deception, bound by a love that outshines the stars.

Katherine Schneider's life as a dentist in 1913 New York is upended when a patient reveals details of a deadly plot while under the influence of laughing gas. As she is plunged into danger, she seeks help from the dashing Lieutenant Jonathan Birch, a police officer she has long admired from afar.

Jonathan has harbored powerful feelings toward Katherine for years but never acted on them, knowing his dark history is something she could never abide. Now, with her safety on the line, he works alongside her through the nights as they unravel the criminal conspiracy that threatens her . . . even as he keeps his deepest secrets hidden at all costs.

MY THOUGHTS

I never would’ve thought that a book featuring a dentist would end up being one of the best I’ve read in recent memory, but “While the City Sleeps” was absolutely fantastic! It was another informative and highly entertaining historical romance from Elizabeth Camden.

I liked Jonathan and Katherine instantly. Katherine was a sweet and humble dentist. It was interesting to get a peek inside the life of a lady dentist in 1913. I also thought it was cool that Katherine wrote a monthly newspaper article that highlighted and celebrated fellow New Yorkers who kept the city running “while the city sleeps." Jonathan was a bit of a mystery at the beginning. He was polite yet kinda standoffish, and very private about his personal life. He had secrets, and I was so eager to find them out!

I was completely invested in the mystery. It was intriguing and dangerous, and it kept me turning the pages as fast as I could.

I didn’t want this story to end! It was so good! If you’re a fan of historical romances that feature an intriguing mystery, you’ll love this book! I highly, highly recommend it!

I received a copy of this book via NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Review: Fatal Witness (Pearl River #2) by Patricia Bradley

About the Book
As a child, artist and potter Dani Bennett witnessed the brutal murder of her parents. With no memory of the incident or her true identity, she was forced to take on a new name and a new life, hidden away in Montana for the past 25 years.

Mae Richmond has spent the same stretch of time searching for her granddaughter, who went missing the night her daughter and son-in-law were murdered. Convinced the woman she saw in a pottery magazine feature is the woman she's been searching for, she enlists the help of K-9 officer Mark Lassiter of Pearl Springs, Tennessee, who tracks Dani down.

Skeptical but curious, Dani sets out on a journey to uncover the secrets of her past and reclaim her true identity. But someone close to her is determined to keep the truth of what happened all those years ago hidden.

MY THOUGHTS

What a thrilling romantic suspense! The first chapter was absolutely gripping, and I was hooked until the very last word. I enjoyed the first book, but I loved this one even more. This is romantic suspense at its finest! The danger and suspense kept ramping up, and I couldn’t read it fast enough. The mystery was compelling and kept me guessing. I had my suspicions, but there were plenty of viable suspects, which had me changing my guess numerous times.

I loved the characters. (Well, most of them.) Dani and Mark were easy to like and root for. And I loved their dogs. They were awesome! My favorite character, though, had to be Mae. What a strong, resilient, stalwart, and fun lady she was! I admired how determined she was to find her granddaughter. Despite the fact that she had been missing for 25 years, Mae never gave up.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys unputdownable romantic suspense. I’m very eager to visit Pearl River again in the next book! And even though this is book two in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone.

I received a copy of this book via NetGalley. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

The back door slammed, and nine-year old Danielle Bennett jumped. She held her breath, waiting to see which daddy it was. The one who laughed and swung her up in the air or the one who yelled and broke things.

Friday 56
Mark turned into the Stones' drive and pulled around to the back just as Sheriff Stone came around the corner with Lizi on her leash. He climbed out and released Gem from the rear seat harness. Review: Sweep with Me (Innkeeper Chronicles) by Ilona Andrews

About the Book
A charming, short novella in the Innkeeper Chronicles, from #1 New York Times bestselling author, Ilona Andrews.

Thank you for joining us at Gertrude Hunt, the nicest Bed and Breakfast in Red Deer, Texas, during the Treaty Stay. As you know, we are honor-bound to accept all guests during this oldest of innkeeper holidays and we are expecting a dangerous guest. Or several. But have no fear. Your safety and comfort is our first priority. The inn and your hosts, Dina Demille and Sean Evans, will defend you at all costs. [But we hope we don’t have to.]

Every winter, Innkeepers look forward to celebrating their own special holiday, which commemorates the ancient treaty that united the very first Inns and established the rules that protect them, their intergalactic guests, and the very unaware/oblivious people of [planet] Earth. By tradition, the Innkeepers welcomed three guests: a warrior, a sage, and a pilgrim, but during the holiday, Innkeepers must open their doors to anyone who seeks lodging. Anyone.

All Dina hopes is that the guests and conduct themselves in a polite manner. But what’s a holiday without at least one disaster?

MY THOUGHTS
"Life gives us precious few opportunities to put our best foot forward, so when a chance to shine presents itself, one should always take it.” Caldenia grinned, baring inhumanely sharp teeth. “Besides, it’s been almost two weeks since anyone was brutally murdered. Things were getting a bit dull. We wouldn’t want to die of boredom, would we?”
I can’t believe it took me so long to get around to reading this book. It was so much fun! I missed these characters and the unique and interesting goings-on at the Gertrude Hunt Inn.

In this installment, it’s time for Treaty Stay, the most important holiday for inns and innkeepers, and, wow, Dina and Sean had quite the eventful holiday! There were so many things that could go wrong. A few extremely dangerous guests showed up, and even some philosophical space chickens. There was never a dull moment, and I enjoyed every second!

There were some pretty good recaps, but I’d still recommend starting with book one. It’ll definitely be worth it; this series is so much fun!

Note: There were a few curse words and some violence, but it was an otherwise clean read.

This week I'm featuring A Lady's Guide to Marvels and Misadventure by Angela Bell releasing February 27.

About the Book
Miss Clara Marie Stanton's family may be eccentric, but they certainly aren't insane.

London, England, 1860
When Clara's ex-fiancé begins to spread rumors that her family suffers from hereditary insanity, it's all she can do to protect them from his desperate schemes, society's prejudice, and a lifetime in an asylum. Then Clara's Grandfather Drosselmeyer brings on an apprentice with a mechanical leg, and all pretense of normalcy takes wing.

Theodore Kingsley, a shame-chased vagabond haunted by the war, wants a fresh start far from Kingsley Court and the disappointed father who declared him dead. Review: Embers in the London Sky by Sarah Sundin

About the Book
As the German army invades the Netherlands in 1940, Aleida van der Zee Martens escapes to London to wait out the Occupation. Separated from her three-year-old son, Theo, in the process, the young widow desperately searches for her little boy even as she works for an agency responsible for evacuating children to the countryside.

When German bombs set London ablaze, BBC radio correspondent Hugh Collingwood reports on the Blitz, eager to boost morale while walking the fine line between truth and censorship. But the Germans are not the only ones Londoners have to fear as a series of murders flame up amid the ashes.

The deaths hit close to home for Hugh, and Aleida needs his help to locate her missing son. As they work together, they grow closer and closer, both to each other and the answers they seek. But with bombs falling and continued killings, they may be running out of time.

MY THOUGHTS

This was another masterful WWII story from Sarah Sundin. I’ve read all of her books, and while this one had a slightly different feel to it, I loved it just as much as her previous stories. In fact, I think it’s my new favorite.

I was completely immersed in this story and was transported back to London in the 1940s, feeling like I was right there alongside these characters. I love when an author can transport me back in time like that.

I really felt for Aleida. She was in a horrible situation at the beginning of the book, and then to be separated from her son? My goodness, my heart broke for her. But I loved her resiliency and straightforwardness. She had an inner strength that I really admired. I liked Hugh instantly. He was a charming guy with a heart of gold. I admired the way that he stuck to his principles and stood firm in his desire to do his job with integrity.

I enjoyed getting to see behind the scenes at the BBC. It was very interesting! And I appreciated the talk about censorship in the media. It was very thought-provoking and is always a timely topic.

I really enjoyed the fact that there was a mystery. It added another layer of intrigue to the story.

I can’t say enough good things about this book. If you’re a fan of WWII fiction, this is a must read! I highly recommend it!

I received an early copy of this book via NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Book Beginnings, First Line Friday, & Friday 56: Sweep with Me (Innkeeper Chronicles) by Ilona Andrews

Freda is taking a hiatus right now, but Anne over at My Head is Full of Books has taken over until Freda returns.

This week I'm featuring Sweep with Me (Innkeeper Chronicles) by Ilona Andrews. I wanted to read a fun, shorter book in between "review" books, so this was perfect! I love this series!

About the Book
A charming, short novella in the Innkeeper Chronicles, from #1 New York Times bestselling author, Ilona Andrews.

Book Beginnings / First Line Friday
Some moments in life you remember forever.

Friday 56
Around us the room was quiet. I had gone for an early nineties feel to it. Wall-to-wall beige carpet, a bed with a flower bedspread, pastel lavender walls, oak furniture, matching desk and dresser: all of it was designed with maximum nostalgia in mind.

Review: Chaos (A Breed Apart: Legacy #2) by Steffani Webb & Ronie Kendig

About the Book
When Rio Silva is told her aunt and uncle are missing in a Philippine rainforest, she knows there is only one way to find them: the retired military working dog her dad entrusted to her. Chaos, however, has a mind of her own. A lot like Rio. Worse, they’ll have to trust arrogant, demanding former Army Ranger Cathal McGowan if she hopes to get them back.

The last thing Cathal McGowan wants as he heads into the darkness of the rainforest is to be shackled with a young, pretty teacher who has no tactical experience. But she has heart—he’ll give her that. And he has the expertise necessary to rescue her family.

Putting everything on the line, Rio and Cathal struggle to navigate the terrain, as well as their emerging feelings for each other. But the closer they get to mission success, the more things aren’t adding up, including who might be behind the disappearances. It’s not long before they realize the rainforest holds greater perils than deadly vipers…and the biggest danger of all might be to their hearts.

Dive into another thrilling A Breed Apart: Legacy adventure!

MY THOUGHTS

What an exciting and action-packed debut from Steffani Webb! This thrill ride grabbed me from the first paragraph and never let go.

I liked the characters a lot. While they had some rough edges, I couldn’t help but root for them. I really enjoyed seeing the sparks fly between Rio and Cathal. They made a good team, even though they got on each other’s nerves at times. And their banter was so much fun! I can’t fail to mention Chaos. What an awesome dog! I loved her!

I enjoyed the setting of the Philippine jungle. I can’t recall ever reading a book that’s set in that location, so that was really interesting!

This was an impressive debut from Steffani Webb, and I’m definitely going to be on the lookout for future books by her. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action-packed romantic suspense. Even though it's part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone just fine.
