Book Beginnings + Friday 56: Agnes at the End of the World by Kelly McWilliams

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice and asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your ereader and share a non-spoilery sentence or two.

This week I'm featuring Agnes at the End of the World by Kelly McWilliams. I'm bummed that I'm probably gonna miss next week's Friday post, but I'm definitely planning to be back the next week. The past few weeks my reading time has seriously dwindled, this week especially. It's like the world is conspiring against me when it comes to my reading. But isn't that the way it goes sometimes?

For the past couple months my Kindle hasn't been wanting to hold a charge. I can read for maybe a couple hours before it dies and I have to plug it in. I do have an extra Kindle, thank goodness, so I'll be using that one soon. I just hate to get rid of this one. I'm the type of person who will use something until it won't work any longer. I'm afraid that time is almost here for this one.

And then, this week, to top it all off, we've been dealing with A/C issues and repairmen and all that fun stuff. We're about to have at least 5 days straight of 100+ degree heat and I'm praying the temporary fix they applied will last until they have the parts in for the permanent fix.

About the Book
The Handmaid's Tale meets Wilder Girls in this unique, voice-driven novel from Kelly McWilliams.

Agnes loves her home of Red Creek--its quiet, sunny mornings, its dusty roads, and its God. There, she cares tirelessly for her younger siblings and follows the town's strict laws. What she doesn't know is that Red Creek is a cult, controlled by a madman who calls himself a prophet.
Then Agnes meets Danny, an Outsider boy, and begins to question what is and isn't a sin. Her younger brother, Ezekiel, will die without the insulin she barters for once a month, even though medicine is considered outlawed. Is she a sinner for saving him? Is her sister, Beth, a sinner for dreaming of the world beyond Red Creek?

As the Prophet grows more dangerous, Agnes realizes she must escape with Ezekiel and leave everyone else, including Beth, behind. But it isn't safe Outside, either: A viral pandemic is burning through the population at a terrifying rate. As Agnes ventures forth, a mysterious connection grows between her and the Virus. But in a world where faith, miracles, and cruelty have long been indistinguishable, will Agnes be able to choose between saving her family and saving the world?

Book Beginnings
Once, a girl lived in a double-wide trailer on ranchland, beneath a wide white sky tumbled with clouds.

Friday 56
Agnes woke gasping in the middle of the night from a vision of the bunker turning red - a vision of all her people, with hard, gem-like skins, wrapped in an infected embrace while they shivered like the tower of crows. The image singed her, charred her soul. She'd never been so badly frightened by a nightmare.

What have you been reading lately?

  1. I kind of hate it when book publishers compare their book to some famous, award-winning book. How dare they? Those comparisons should be made by reviewers, not people trying to sell the book. So, is it as good as The Handmaid's Tale? My book LEAVING TIME

    1. I liked it. It had it's issues, but it was a compelling read. To me, it didn't feel anything like The Handmaid's Tale, so that comparison is a little baffling. I haven't read Wilder Girls, so I can't say about that one.

    1. It's such a weird coincidence! I wonder if there are more of them this year, or if we're just noticing them more. :)

    1. There's just too many good books out there and never enough time to get to them all. :)

  8. Love that first line.
Condolences on the kindle and the AC. I used to escape to the library or a coffee shop when our AC went out, but that isn't really an option right now. Hope you find more reading time soon.

    1. Thank you, Roberta! I'm hopeful things will turn around soon. I had to go ahead and give up with my old Kindle. I'm gonna try the new one today and hope it works out well. :)
