Book Beginnings, First Line Friday, & Friday 56: Of Silver and Secrets (Time's Lost Treasures Book #2) by Michelle Griep

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. I'm also linking up with Carrie at Reading is My Superpower for First Line Friday. Friday 56 asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your ereader and share a non-spoilery sentence or two. It was started by Freda at Freda's Voice, but Anne over at My Head is Full of Books has taken over for the time being.

This week I'm featuring Of Silver and Secrets (Time's Lost Treasures Book #2) by Michelle Griep. I loved this book! It comes out June 3 and I should have my review up then.

About the Book
Buried underneath are truths bent on keeping them apart. . . .

In 1889 Victorian England, Eva Inman is haunted by guilt over her parents' deaths while struggling to care for her blind sister and manage her family's crumbling estate. With the tax deadline looming, Eva's situation looks dire until an ancient silver ring is unearthed on the property. Despite superstitions warning against disturbing the supposedly cursed acres, Eva's need for funds ignites her curiosity about the potential of finding more buried relics.

Cambridge professor Bram Webb must prove a legendary Christian Roman settlement exists, or he'll risk exposing his uncle's deteriorating memory and they'll both lose their positions. Then Eva steps into his office with the prospect of an archaeological dig that might lead to the very evidence Bram requires--provided he and Eva can set aside painful memories of a time they would rather forget. As the dig forces the two to confront their pasts, the work becomes fraught with challenges that threaten Eva's and Bram's hopes, as well as the growing attraction between them.

Book Beginnings / First Line Friday
Royston, England
1889
The end of Eva's world started with a window she never should have left open. A small neglect, yet twelve years later, one that had culminated in a leaky roof, a ledger that refused to balance, and a blind sister. Not to mention her dead mother - for Eva wouldn't. She kept that memory locked tightly in a closet.

Friday 56
Wind rattled the shutters against the house, howling through cracks in the walls, a violent echo of Eva's demand to know his secrets.

Can't Wait Wednesday: The Scarlet Star (Songs of the Adriels #1) by Jennifer Kropf

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week I'm featuring The Scarlet Star (Songs of the Adriels #1) by Jennifer Kropf releasing June 18.

About the Book
He’s a beast trapped in a palace, and she’s a beauty tangled in his web…

Nineteen-year-old Ryn Electus is captured and brought to the palace for a twelve-week trial period along with three of the fairest maidens in the kingdom to try and ‘steal the heart’ of a young, tormented King with a deadly secret. Unfortunately, the King appears to have no interest in the maidens and keeps getting himself into trouble.

But the King isn’t the only one with a dangerous secret. Ryn has been living in hiding all these years, until she’s dragged from her home and put on a public stage where she finds herself in the crosshairs of the Intelligentsia; a council of sages who serve the seven Celestial Divinities and conspire to destroy people like her. If the sages discover who Ryn really is, she’ll be dead by morning.

Things get even more complicated when Ryn learns what Xerxes is fighting against, the internal wars he’s waging on his own, and why he keeps getting himself into trouble.

However, shortly after Ryn arrives at the palace, an old priestess opens Ryn’s eyes to see the workings of false gods at war who are influencing the kingdom of Per-Siana at every turn, dragging the people into destruction and causing chaos. Ryn is forced to question everything she thought she knew about the gods, until she unexpectedly gains the favour of an ancient god who’s been “silent” for decades; the God Original, the first God, enemy of the Celestial Divinities, who beckons Ryn to shake up the very foundations of the domain.

Thus begins a battle fought in the shadows alongside a war of gowns and politics waged in the spotlight.

Ryn must do everything she can to hide that she’s a descendant of King Xerxes’s enemies, and she and Xerxes were born as rivals, destined to hate and destroy each other.

She has only weeks to decide which side she’s on.

Inspired by the fairytale Beauty and the Beast and the Biblical story of Queen Esther, this mashup of high stakes, forbidden romance, and dangerous secrets isn’t the fairytale you know.

This book is ideal for fans of The Selection Series by Kiara Cass and A Curse so Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer and includes gorgeous character illustrations by Kyannah Durocher.

Review: Meet Me on Lilac Lane (A Jonathon Island Novel #2) by Andrea Christenson

About the Book
The Jonathon Island series is created by USA Today bestselling, award-winning author Susan May Warren.

He was her late husband's best friend, but for him she'd always been the one.

Mia Jonathon Franklin has been living a nightmare for the last two years—ever since her husband and high school sweetheart died in a fishing boat accident, leaving her to care for her two young kids on her own. She's managed to stay afloat, but her husband's paltry life insurance money is gone—and if she can't find a way to support her family, she may lose the cozy cottage she and Troy had meant to grow old in.

So when Mia is offered a chance to buy her own house for a dollar if she can find business owners to move to Jonathon Island, it seems like the answer to her prayers. That is until she learns the ridiculous quota required to complete the deal. She’s in over her head...until her late husband's best friend offers to lend a hand.

Cody Hart has been haunted by survivor's guilt since the boating accident that claimed his best friend's life. Torn between his own dreams of reopening his family's fishing business and his desire to help Mia, the woman he has loved since their youth, he steps up to help. She needs him and he’s not going to let her down…or let his heart cause her more pain.

As Mia and Cody work together to breathe new life into the island's Main Street, their shared history and undeniable connection threatens to reignite long-buried feelings. Can they overcome the obstacles that stand in their way and find the courage to embrace a second chance at love, or will the weight of their pasts and the uncertainties of the future keep them from the happiness they both deserve?

MY THOUGHTS

This was such a sweet story! Heartfelt and emotional, I loved it!

I really liked Mia. She's a widow with two young children who's barely making ends meet and is on the verge of losing her home. Things seemed dire, but I loved her determination. She never gave up and was constantly striving to make things better for her kids. It was inspiring to read about. Speaking of her kids, Finn and Maggie were a handful but absolutely adorable!

Cody was very likable and hardworking. He was a great guy. He blamed himself for the death of his best friend, who was also Mia's husband. Seeing him wrestle with that guilt was heartbreaking, but I loved seeing him light up around Mia and her kids. While there were some obstacles in the way of him and Mia getting together, I was rooting for them. They were so good together. Exactly what the other needed.

I loved visiting Jonathon Island again and look forward to visiting it again in the next book! If you're looking for a sweet, small-town romance with a strong message of faith, grab a copy of this book.

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

This week I'm featuring Chain Reaction (Lantern Beach Blackout: Detonation Book 1) by Christy Barritt. Yep, another Christy Barritt book, lol. She writes so fast that I'm having a hard time keeping up! I guess that's a good problem to have with a favorite author though!

About the Book
When an explosion rocks Lantern Beach, authorities scramble into action. Was the WWII relic that washed ashore merely bad luck—or something far more sinister?

Dr. Raven Newton, a forensic archaeologist, is called to investigate the bomb that killed one person. With her specialized knowledge of military artifacts, she’s the perfect person for the job—until she discovers who else is on the case.

Former Navy SEAL Jake Laudner never forgot his whirlwind romance with Raven. This week I'm featuring Awakened by Roseanna M. White releasing June 3.

About the Book
Where sea and land meet, two worlds clash in a fury of wind and waves.

Arden Bleu has always known that her stepsister, Jade, was destined for great things. In a world where beauty follows magic, she has no doubt that their upcoming Awakening ceremony will reveal that gorgeous, kind, compelling Jade is far more than a mere mortal. But when Jade is kidnapped by a mysterious sect of mer on the eve of the newly-returned king’s ball, Arden will do anything to save her sister. Even face down the man she’s always dreaded meeting because of the power he holds over her family, the man to whom her father swore loyalty long before she was born. The Sea King.

Seidon, the Sea King of Daryatla, has grown only more powerful as the centuries have gone by, but lifetime after lifetime have failed to give him what he most yearns for: a family. He knows that it will take a woman of extraordinary power to match him enough to create a child, and no such woman seems to exist…until he feels her magic calling to his one day in the water. And when Arden Bleu, daughter of his most trusted official, arrives to tell him about her missing stepsister, he knows this Jade, with a new magic so coveted that the mer would risk war with his kingdom to steal her away, may be the one he’s waited centuries for. But how can he and the determined Arden ever hope to find one young woman trapped beneath the waves? Perhaps the Great Golden Sea Hawk who has guarded the sisters all their lives holds the key.

In a world on the brink of war between the mer and the land-dwellers, friendship, faith, and love demand the ultimate sacrifice as both kingdoms seek to unlock the prophesied magic waiting to spring forth: the magic of wind and sky. To the mer, it would mean the freedom to return to the land. To Seidon’s court, it would mean safety from every storm. But how can any human hand wield the wind?

Review: Blackmail and Kitty Tails (A Purr-fect Relic Cozy Mystery #5) by DeAnna Drake

About the Book
A glamorous gala, a cursed dagger, and a killer on the loose—Rebecca Cuthbert and her talking cat, Aneksi, face their most dangerous mystery yet.

When Rebecca Cuthbert volunteered to help with the Citrus Grove Women’s Club gala, she envisioned a night filled with elegant silk drapes, Egyptian-themed decorations, and tasty hors d’oeuvres—certainly not murder. But then the lights flicker out during the party setup, and club president Deborah Ralston is found dead, stabbed with an ancient dagger.

With Aneksi purring by her side and a murder weapon steeped in legend, Rebecca must unravel a twisted web of secrets, blackmail, and bitter rivalries behind this sinister murder. Everyone from suspicious club members to scorned lovers is a suspect, and time is running out as Rebecca’s own antique shop becomes linked to the deadly artifact.

Can Rebecca and her cat corner the killer before tragedy slashes her world again?

A cozy mystery perfect for fans of charming small towns, clever cats, and amateur sleuths!

MY THOUGHTS

After recently joining the Citrus Grove Women’s Club, Rebecca is swept up into another mystery when the newly appointed president of the club is murdered while getting things ready for the upcoming Egyptian-themed gala.

I thought the mystery was really good. It definitely kept me guessing. There were plenty of suspects with plenty of motive. I thought I had it figured out several times but ended up being surprised in the end. I love when that happens.

I think my favorite thing about this series is seeing the bond between Rebecca and Grandpa Stirling. It’s so sweet! I also love Aneksi. She’s awesome!

I loved visiting Citrus Grove again. It’s such a cozy and charming town full of so many great characters!

I don’t want to spoil anything, but I will say that ending has me so eager for the next book! I can’t wait! If you’re a fan of cozy mysteries, I highly recommend this series! It’s so good!

Review: Warsafe by Lauren Smyth

About the Book
Play. Win. Survive.

There’s one building on her island that Halley has never visited: the Mercenary House. Perched atop a mountain, surrounded by unnaturally evergreen foliage, the House is rumored to be a breeding ground for criminals. Mercenaries are liars, cheats, spies . . . and maybe, depending on who you ask, killers.

At the Warsafe headquarters in Seattle, Roscoe is beta testing the company’s new video game. It’s her job to track down glitches—but something is different about this one. Lurking behind the lines of malfunctioning code is a secret that threatens to drag her deeper into the game, forcing her to put her life on the line if she ever wants to come home.

Worlds collide as Roscoe teams up with Halley to uncover the island’s secret and expose Warsafe’s designs. But some mysteries are better left unsolved. As traitor after so-called traitor is revealed to be on their side, they begin to wonder: Could Warsafe’s mission be critical enough to justify its cruelty?

MY THOUGHTS

Y'all! This book was fantastic! Where do I even begin? It's a thrill ride from start to finish. We're thrown right into the story, and I was instantly intrigued and invested. I was glued to the pages and reading as fast as I could. I didn't want to put the book down for anything, but when I inevitably had to, it was constantly on my mind.

The world-building was great! Very believable! It was so immersive, like I could just step through the pages and enter the world myself.

There are several different POVs. When there are multiple perspectives like that, I'm usually drawn to one more so than the others, but I enjoyed them all equally here. I really liked the characters and enjoyed getting to know them and seeing things through their unique viewpoints.

I'm a big gamer, so all of the video game stuff was really interesting to me! I was definitely shocked by some of the turn of events. It kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat.

This was an incredibly compelling and unputdownable read! I loved it and highly recommend it! Smyth is a very talented author, and I'm looking forward to whatever she writes next.

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my own honest opinion.

About the Book
No one betrays the Academy. But now Euphemia must decide: break the rules for her enemy, or let the rules break her heart.

On the outskirts of London sits a seemingly innocuous institution with a secretive aim—train young women to distract, disrupt, and discredit the patriarchy. Outraged by a powerful lord’s systematic attack on women’s rights in Parliament, the Academy summons its brightest—and most bitter—pupil to infiltrate the odious man’s inner circle. A deal is struck: bring down the viscount, and Miss Euphemia Flite will finally earn her freedom.

But betting shop owner Gabriel Royce has other plans. The viscount is the perfect pawn to insulate Gabriel’s underworld empire from government interference. He’s not about to let some crinoline-clad miss destroy his carefully constructed enterprise—no matter how captivating he finds her threats.

From the rookeries of St. Giles to the ballrooms of Mayfair, Euphemia and Gabriel engage in a battle of wits and wills that’s complicated by a blossoming desire. Soon Euphemia realizes it’s not the broken promises to her Academy sisters she should fear. . . . It’s the danger to her heart.

COVER REVEAL: Flameheart by Dalton Bequette & Emily Bequette

I'm so excited to be part of the cover reveal for Flameheart by Dalton Bequette & Emily Bequette releasing July 29th. Isn't it epic?!

About the Book

Out of the pages, he comes.
Into the pages, she must go.

Seventeen-year-old Lia Corvine supports her fracturing family, no matter the cost. It’s irrelevant that her father's absence eats away at her false smiles and reassurances, that insecurities plague her mind. Lia’s only reprieve is writing stories with her grandfather, where she can escape as a ranger to a floating kingdom with roguish Prince Kayce.

But everything crumbles when her grandfather suddenly passes away. As grief unleashes her barely-bound anxiety, it also unlocks Lia's slumbering magic–and drags Kayce into reality.

However, when barriers fray and dreams come true, so do nightmares. Monsters lurk in the streets. Envious societies hunger for power. And Lia finds herself in the center of a nefarious plot. With ancient orders governing the magic her family never told her about, it seems her grandfather's death was no accident. Only Lia can retrace his steps for answers. But even with Kayce by her side, can Lia embrace who she's only allowed herself to be in fantasy?

For her kingdom's sake, she must face the darkness within and without…before there are no stories left to tell.

About the Book
Welcome to the Barks & Beans Cafe, a quaint place where folks pet shelter dogs while enjoying a cup of java...and where murder sometimes pays a visit.

The Barks & Beans booth at the Renaissance Faire is hopping, since Macy managed to talk her muscled redhead brother into donning a kilt for the occasion. Even better, Macy's boyfriend Titan has come for a visit, so she can't wait to peruse the shops and watch the shows with him.

Join siblings Macy and Bo Hatfield as they sniff out crimes in their hometown...with plenty of dogs along for the ride! The Barks & Beans Cafe cozy mystery series features a small town, an amateur sleuth, and no swearing or graphic scenes.

MY THOUGHTS

I loved this book so much! It was another great addition to one of my favorite cozy mystery series.

I loved that this book mostly took place at a Renaissance fair. It's such a cool setting! I also really enjoyed the costumes, especially Coal’s!

The mystery was a good one. It definitely kept me guessing. Was it a jousting accident gone wrong, or something more sinister? The victim was not well liked at all, so the likelihood of foul play was high. The suspect list was a long one too. I had my suspicions but ended up being surprised by the reveal.

If you’re a fan of cozy mysteries, you’ll love this series! I can’t wait for the next one!

Review: The Flight of the Spellbound (The Karneesia Chronicles Book 2) by Claire Trella Hill

About the Book
Falcon by day. Girl by night.

Eyl has transformed against her will every day for nine years. She and her fellow captives are magically bound to their captor—and the wizard’s mental state is deteriorating. They have nearly given up hope of escape…until the night a stranger arrives at the tower.

Natural son of the High Wizard, Fee is bone-tired of war and of being his father’s pet interrogator. When he finds letters to his father offering magical experiments to assist the Damaslar war effort, Fee deserts to help them flee. He doesn’t expect to be greeted with a knife to the throat by a prickly but fascinating girl full of hidden pain and deep secrets.

The spells that trap Eyl are as layered and complex as her trust issues, and escape is only the first step. To find a refuge, Eyl and her companions must depend on each other as they cross a haunted forest and traverse a warzone while she and Fee grow from reluctant allies to something more.

But Fee’s father is not ready to let his secret magical weapons go without a fight, and Eyl can’t run from her past forever….

THE FLIGHT OF THE SPELLBOUND is a romantic fantasy adventure perfect for fans of Ladyhawke, Willow the Series, and Shannon Hale. It is the second in the Karneesia Chronicles, interconnected standalones set in the world of Karneesia

MY THOUGHTS

I absolutely loved this book! I’ve loved everything I’ve read by Claire Trella Hill, but I think this is my favorite. It blew my admittedly high expectations out of the water!

I really felt for the characters. They had to deal with some harsh and serious things, but I loved seeing their resiliency. I loved their friendship and strong bond. And I loved how they looked out for each other.

I loved the faith element. Eyl’s relationship with God had its ups and downs, but I loved how real it felt. I think we’ve all been mad and questioned why certain things happen, so it was refreshing to see Eyl’s struggles and ultimately her growth. I think that was my favorite part of the book.

While this book deals with some serious topics, it was all handled with grace. I appreciated the light that was shined on these topics.

My emotions ran the gamut throughout this book. Happy, sad, angry, jubilant, anxious, excited. I love when a book can make me feel so many things.

This book is the second in the series, but it completely stands alone. If you’re a fan of this genre, don’t hesitate to pick up a copy. You’ll love it! It’s going on my favorites shelf. I highly recommend it and can’t wait for Hill’s next release!

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Book Beginnings, First Line Friday, & Friday 56: Warsafe by Lauren Smyth

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. I'm also linking up with Carrie at Reading is My Superpower for First Line Friday. Friday 56 asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your ereader and share a non-spoilery sentence or two. It was started by Freda at Freda's Voice, but Anne over at My Head is Full of Books has taken over for the time being.

This week I'm featuring Warsafe by Lauren Smyth. I'm almost halfway done with my ARC and am loving it!

Book Beginnings / First Line Friday
I'd seen her name at the bottom of the list that morning. I remembered thinking it was a miracle she hadn't been killed yet. But I was more interested in the names at the top of the list - those who still had a fighting chance to win the game - and I soon forgot about her. It's hard to worry about mortality when you're scrubbing burnt egg off a saucepan.

Friday 56
"You were amazing," Roscoe blurted. "You've got the system figured out. I thought this was one of those games where you just charge in and shoot on sight, but you made it look so much easier than that."
