Review: The Edge of Knife (Bobbi Sue Baxter Mysteries Book 3) by Marissa Shrock

About the Book
The summer of ’88 in Wildcat Springs, Indiana, was supposed to be thoroughly boring. But when Bobbi Sue Baxter’s friend enters her into a sweepstakes (without her knowledge) to make a guest appearance on daytime drama, The Cute and the Cunning, and she wins, the season starts to get complicated. Then, her friendship with Hemingway “Hemi” Miller evolves into something more, and things slide toward complex.

After filming, when the star of The Cute and the Cunning gets stabbed with a hunting knife? Life gets downright insane.

Bobbi Sue tries to stay out of the chaos, but with her well-proven instincts for cracking hard-to-solve crimes, that’s highly unlikely. Bobbi Sue’s sleuthing uncovers twists and turns even she couldn’t anticipate, so she can’t see the peril about to be unleashed on her life, with little chance of escape.

The Edge of Knife is Bobbi Sue Baxter’s most riveting adventure yet and definitely not to be missed.

MY THOUGHTS

This was such a fun mystery and another great addition to the series. One of the things I love most about the series, besides the wonderful characters and intriguing mysteries, is the fact that it takes place in the 80s!

The premise was so good! Bobbie Sue’s friend entered her into a sweepstakes for a guest role on the soap opera, The Cute and the Cunning, and won! How cool would that be? Well, things take a turn pretty quickly after the lead actress is stabbed! With a long list of suspects, budding investigative journalist Bobbie Sue is on the case!

Bobbie Sue is such a great character. She has great instincts, and it’s always fun to try to solve the case right alongside her.

There were a lot of laughs, especially when Bobbie Sue’s grandma was around. She’s a hoot!

The mystery was really good and kept me guessing. I was shocked when it came time for the reveal.

If you’re a fan of cozy mysteries, check out this series. I highly recommend it! I can’t wait to see what Bobbie Sue’s up to next!

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Book Beginnings, First Line Friday, & Friday 56: The Crime of Our Lives by Christy Barritt

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. I'm also linking up with Carrie at Reading is My Superpower for First Line Friday. Friday 56 asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your ereader and share a non-spoilery sentence or two. It was started by Freda at Freda's Voice, but Anne over at My Head is Full of Books has taken over for the time being.

This week I'm featuring The Crime of Our Lives by Christy Barritt. This book was so fun! Heroines from three of Barritt's most popular series team up together in this exciting and hilarious mystery.

About the Book
Take a ride with three of your favorite detectives in this Squeaky Clean, Worst Detective Ever, Lantern Beach crossover novel!

A forensic specialist with a knack for solving puzzles.
A police chief with a witness who just vanished.
And a Hollywood actress who can't seem to stay out of trouble.

Forensic specialist Gabby St. Claire Thomas travels to North Carolina’s Outer Banks to investigate a string of mysterious drownings. But what starts as a simple consultation with local law enforcement quickly spirals into chaos when they run into world-famous actress Joey Darling and her legion of fans.

The distraction allows a witness Lantern Beach Chief Cassidy Chambers is transporting to disappear—along with her car and phone. Now these three very different women team up to find him. As they do, it becomes clear that something sinister is brewing in this beach town.

With their unique combination of forensic expertise, law enforcement experience, and Hollywood connections, this trio might just be the perfect team to crack this case . . . if they can stay alive long enough to solve it.

Book Beginnings / First Line Friday
-Gabby-
“Breeze rushing through my hair
Music blaring like I don’t have a care
Iced coffee in my hand
All because I’ve got a plan
I’m going to solve a crime
Right on time…right on time.”
Yes, I made up the song. I even made up the tune, though I could totally hear Meghan Trainor singing it in my head. I, for one, thought the ditty was rather catchy.

Friday 56
My lungs remained frozen as I waited. If they were coming after us, they’d appear in this parking lot at any moment.

Review: Evergreen Chase: A Shady Hollow Mystery Short by Juneau Black

About the Book

A Shady Hollow Holiday Short Story

It’s the winter solstice in Shady Hollow, that magical time of year when creatures of all shapes and sizes come together to honor the season and eat as much pie as possible. Reporter Vera Vixen is eager to experience her first holiday in town and is especially looking forward to the unveiling of the solstice tree. But then disaster strikes. The year’s tree—the tallest in the forest—has disappeared without a trace. Can Vera, her best friend, Lenore, and Deputy Orville Braun find the tree and save the season? Or will this year’s solstice be especially dark?

MY THOUGHTS

This cute short story was the perfect way to spend an afternoon. It had all the cozy, Christmassy vibes, which I absolutely adored. I loved getting a peek at the holidays in Shady Hollow.

The mystery was a good one. The town’s special holiday tree was stolen! Since it’s the tallest and biggest tree in the area, there are lots of questions. How was it moved without being seen? Why would someone steal it? And most importantly, who did it? Who would do such a thing? I had my suspicions but wasn’t a hundred percent sure.

If you’re new to this series, this standalone short story is the perfect way to get a quick peek into this world and its characters. If you’re a fan of quirky cozy mysteries, give it a try! I loved it!
