Book Beginnings + Friday 56: The Storyteller's Daughter by Victoria McCombs

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice and asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your ereader and share a non-spoilery sentence or two.

This week I'm featuring a fun Rumpelstiltskin retelling, The Storyteller's Daughter by Victoria McCombs.

About the Book
His shadowed face lit by flames,
Rumpelstiltskin is my name...

For as long as anyone can remember, every child in Westfallen has been born with a Gift, and these Gifts defined them.

Then Cosette is born, Giftless.

An attempt to hide her misfortune brings her before the King, who entraps her to use her Gift as a pawn in his war.

Caught in a lie, Cosette desperately searches for a power strong enough to free her. Intrigued by whispers of an old king and a dark curse, she calls upon Rumpelstiltskin and finds him trapped in a magic deeper than she bargained for. Now, Cosette must fight to reclaim her freedom from the King and break Rumpel’s curse. When time runs out, she’ll lose more than her heart. She’ll lose her life.

THE STORYTELLER’S DAUGHTER is a Rumpelstiltskin retelling that will satisfy fans of Gail Carson Levine’s ELLA ENCHANTED, as well as Jessica Day George’s DRAGON SLIPPERS and PRINCESS OF GLASS, and Cameron Dokey’s THE WORLD ABOVE.

Book Beginnings
If I could choose my Gift, I'd want it to be practical like making bread or shoes to provide for my family.

Friday 56
I spent most of the night in my family's company as I helped out at the tavern. It was strange, how much I used to despise working there and how much comfort I found in it that night. It was nice to feel something normal again.

Review: Flight Risk by Cara C. Putman

About the Book
Bestselling author Cara Putman returns with a romantic legal thriller that will challenge the assumptions of truth tellers everywhere.

Savannah Daniels has worked hard to build her law practice, to surround herself with good friends, and to be the loyal aunt her troubled niece can always count on. But since her ex-husband’s betrayal, she has trouble trusting anyone.

Jett Glover’s father committed suicide over a false newspaper report that ruined his reputation. Now a fierce champion of truth, Jett is writing the story of his journalism career—an international sex-trafficking exposé that will bring down a celebrity baseball player and the men closest to him, including Savannah’s ex-husband.

When Jett’s story breaks, tragedy ensues. Then a commercial airline crashes, and one of Savannah’s clients is implicated in the crash. Men connected to the scandal, including her ex, begin to die amid mysterious circumstances, and Savannah’s niece becomes an unwitting target.

Against their better instincts, Jett and Savannah join ranks to sort the facts from fiction. But can Savannah trust the reporter who threw her life into chaos? And can Jett face the possibility that he’s made the biggest mistake of his life?

My Thoughts

“Finding truth in a fake news world.”

Flight Risk is the first full-length book I've read by Cara Putman and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's quite a thrilling read full of twists and turns that I didn't see coming.

Jett Glover takes pride in his work as a journalist. He's meticulous in his research and never puts out a piece unless he's 100% sure it's the truth. He knows what it's like to be on the other side of an article full of falsehoods and the devastating consequences that can follow. But when his new article about high profile men involved in human trafficking breaks, tragedy ensues and he's left questioning everything.

Attorney Savannah Daniels gets wrapped up in Jett's story because her ex-husband is one of the guys in the article. Then, she finds out that one of the cases she's working on could possibly be connected to a plane crash that had some of those high profile men on it, one of them being her ex. To protect her niece and find out what's really going on, she teams up with the pesky reporter to discover the truth.

I had a great time reading this book and trying to figure out how everything was connected and what was fact or fiction. It certainly kept me guessing. I'm excited to check out more of this author's work.

Wander Canyon

Book 1: Their Wander Canyon Wish

Book 2: Winning Back Her Heart

Book 3: His Christmas Wish

My Thoughts

What a sweet story! His Christmas Wish is the perfect read to put you in the Christmas spirit. I can always count on Allie Pleiter to deliver a heartwarming read that leaves a smile on my face. This is my favorite one of hers yet.

The characters were great. The connection between Jake and Emma was so strong. And Cole was such an adorable little guy. He'd been through so much, but showed such resiliency. Emma and Jake were so tender with him and really went all out to make Christmas something special for him.

I loved being back in Wander Canyon. It's such a charming town. I wish it was real because I'd love to visit and meet all the wonderful characters and see the iconic carousel in person. If this is your first visit to Wander Canyon, no worries. It's a standalone. Though, I know you'll be wanting to check out the previous books to visit it again.

If you're a fan of Hallmark movies, you'll love His Christmas Wish. I highly recommend it and can't wait to see what Pleiter writes next.

I received a copy of this book from the author and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Review: In an Absent Dream (Wayward Children #4) by Seanan McGuire

About the Book

This fourth entry and prequel tells the story of Lundy, a very serious young girl who would rather study and dream than become a respectable housewife and live up to the expectations of the world around her. As well she should.

When she finds a doorway to a world founded on logic and reason, riddles and lies, she thinks she's found her paradise. Alas, everything costs at the goblin market, and when her time there is drawing to a close, she makes the kind of bargain that never plays out well.

My Thoughts

I really enjoyed In an Absent Dream. I think it might be my favorite one of the series. There's just something about Seanan McGuire's writing style that pulls me straight into the story and tugs at my heartstrings.

This story was haunting, atmospheric, and, like the previous books, a touch bittersweet. Lundy's “world”, the goblin market, was such an interesting place. A place where everything must be fair and the rules are the rules, no exceptions are made for breaking them.

I'm pretty sure this book works as a standalone, but I'd still recommend reading at least the first one before picking this one up.

What an enchanting adventure! I'm excited for more in this series.

Review: Ahab by E.B. Dawson

About the Book
After a devastating interstellar war against the machines known as Mechanized Intelligence Cruisers, the Commonwealth is ready to return to normal life.

Captain Ahab is not.

Tired of being paraded around the capital as a war hero, Ahab finally secures a commission to hunt down the last remaining MICs in the outer planets.

He gets more than he bargained for with Moby Dick.

Ahab’s first encounter with the massive white MIC leaves Ahab without a ship and without a leg. Plagued by fever during his recuperation, Ahab becomes convinced that Moby Dick is a threat to the Commonwealth's newfound peace. But his willingness to do whatever it takes to destroy the MIC leads his best friend and first mate Starbuck to wonder if their captain is in his right mind.

My Thoughts

Ahab was a really great read. It was my first time reading anything by E.B. Dawson and it definitely won't be the last. It's a retelling of Moby Dick set in space. I've never actually read Moby Dick, but that didn't hinder my enjoyment one bit.

The world building was rich with detail. The characters jumped off the page and had such a vibrancy and depth about them. My favorite aspect of the book was the friendship between Ahab and Starbuck. It was such an integral part of the story and was really well done.

If you're a fan of sci-fi, I highly recommend checking out Ahab.

Review: When I’m With You (Big Prairie Romance #3) by Jennifer Rodewald

About the Book
He wants what he deserves, and this time he won’t walk away without it.
Meeting Daisy Hopewell shouldn’t change a thing.

Lane Carson is sick of living like a wandering homeless man. When he receives a text message from a woman claiming to be his brother’s fiancée, nothing short of meeting her will convince him his reclusive older brother has worked up the courage to talk to a woman, let alone propose. And since he’s returning to Big Prairie, he’s determined to claim the inheritance that should have been his. As long as no one expects him to live up to his brother’s impossible standards.

Daisy Hopewell has found refuge in Big Prairie working as a hired hand at the Carson Ranch—an opportunity to prove that her worth goes much deeper than being a rich man’s daughter. Her haven is shaken, however, when the boss’s brother shows up. Lane Carson is nothing like his reserved, serious brother. And Daisy knows from experience that when you add massive flirt to good-looking, the result is heartbreak.

Meeting Daisy sidetracks Lane’s plans, especially when she turns out to be irritatingly immune to his charm. But after being caught with her in a devastating flood, Lane suddenly finds himself reevaluating his approach to everything. Daisy’s stubborn determination and unflappable kindness feed his burgeoning desire to be more than a reckless, selfish man, but the last thing Lane needs is to be deemed unworthy by yet another person in his world.

Daisy is discovering a depth to Lane she hadn’t expected, and with Daisy, Lane finds himself believing he could be a better man. But by the time he figures that out, it might be too late, because she’s determined never to play the fool again.

Can Lane and Daisy release the resentment they cling to from the disappointments of their pasts and step toward the possibility of being different—better—together?

Small town Christian stories of romance and redemption, begin the Big Prairie Romance series today!

My Thoughts

I absolutely loved this book! As I've come to expect from Jennifer Rodewald, this was another stellar and poignant read that went deep and pulled at my heartstrings. Tender, at times, yet hard-hitting when it needed to be, I ran the gamut of emotions. I felt the highs and the lows and was right in the thick of things with these realistic characters.

Lane had a lot of rough edges to him. It took me a little bit to fully connect with him, but, gosh, when I did, he became one of my favorite characters ever. Him and his brother Lance weren't on the best of terms. He felt slighted and hurt, so he lashed out with sarcastic remarks and sharp barbs. Not gonna lie, he was a bit of a jerk sometimes. It was painful to watch the struggle, but it was such a powerful journey to redemption and healing. I loved getting to know the real Lane, the man he tried to hide from everyone. He's a real good guy underneath it all.

Daisy was easy to like and easy to root for. She's an all-around good and hardworking young lady. She's feisty, doesn't back down from a challenge, and goes toe-to-toe with the best of them. She's the perfect match for Lane. She's got some trust issues, though, after being wronged recently, so her guard is high.

I seriously can't recommend this book highly enough. It's fantastic. And while it is book three in the series, it stands alone just fine.

I received a copy of this book from the author and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Favorite Quotes

“I have learned – over and again, and sometimes with great difficulties – that maintaining a label on others based on their failures is selling everyone short. Those particular people and myself. More importantly, the Redeemer who washes stains until they are white as snow.”

“...while reputations are earned, God's grace is not. Perhaps along with that, people may not be able to change on their own, but God's redemption and transformation are often woven together.”

“I can't help but wonder at God's timing. You are here to begin again. And here Lane arrives after years of being gone. Suppose he wants a clean start too? You came partly because no one here was witness to your great disappointment. What if we allow Lane such an innocent audience as well?”

If he stayed, he could reinvent himself so that every day he wouldn't have to take a shovel to the shame.

“...I've walked a path of reckless rebellion. But God has littered the path with nuggets of grace, with tokens that have whispered His faithful love into my selfish destruction. That kind of love – it leaves me breathless.”

Review: Forsaken Island (The Dancing Realms #2) by Sharon Hinck

About the Book
On an uncharted world, happiness is effortless and constant ... but can true joy exist without sacrifice?

The people of Meriel have long believed their island world floats alone in the vast ocean universe, so they are astonished when another island drifts into view. With resources becoming scarce, Carya and Brantley quickly volunteer to search the new land for supplies.

After navigating a barrier of menacing trees, the pair encounter a culture of perpetually happy people who readily share their talents and their possessions. But all is not what it seems. At the core of the island is a horror that threatens everyone, including Brantley and Carya.

Freeing the villagers of the bondage they've chosen may cost Carya and Brantley more than they could have imagined. Even if the two succeed, they'll have to find a way to return to Meriel quickly ... or be cut off from their home forever.

My Thoughts

I absolutely loved Forsaken Island! It's book two in The Dancing Realms series and I definitely recommend reading book one, Hidden Current, before diving into this one.

Hidden Current is one of the best books I've read this year so I was extremely excited for this follow-up. Forsaken Island did not disappoint. It's just as stunning as the first one. It's got such a powerful and poignant message full of so many spiritual truths. I was left breathless by the sheer beauty of it all. It was so thought-provoking. I became so absorbed in it that I barely noticed the real world around me. It was just that good.

I highly recommend this series to everyone. It's unique and enchanting and unputdownable. I know I'll be thinking about it for a long time to come.

Review: Saltwater Cowboy by Christy Barritt

About the Book
He’s trying to forget. She’d give anything to remember.

Officer Levi Sutherland wants to protect the wild horses of Cape Corral and keep the island residents safe. But memories of his deceased wife haunt him at every turn and make him long for a fresh start. When a woman washes ashore with a bullet wound and no memories, Levi knows he can’t leave until he discovers what happened to her.

The woman—whose necklace reads Dani—captures Levi’s attention like no one has in a long time. But which side of the law is she on? Could Dani be mixed up with other mysterious incidents happening on the island?

Together, can the two find answers and create new memories? Or will secrets tear them apart and destroy a future as uncertain as Dani’s past?

My Thoughts

What a great start to a new series. The danger and suspense start right off the bat and barely let up for the rest of the book. I loved that I was able to slowly figure out the mystery as more of the pieces to the puzzle were revealed.

I really liked the island setting of Cape Corral. And while, at first, it might be a bit reminiscent of Barritt's Lantern Beach, it's actually quite different and such a unique place. The residents, the horses, the whole atmosphere really give it so much character and such a strong identity.

I highly recommend Saltwater Cowboy to anyone who's a fan of romantic suspense. I'm excited to visit Cape Corral again in the next book!

My Thoughts

I really enjoyed this anthology. It was a great introduction to so many authors. There were a few that I was familiar with, but most of them were new to me and quite a few are going on my watchlist. I'm excited to check out more from them. It's amazing how they packed so much story into so few words!

The Spark by Julie Hall was my favorite. My goodness, she can do no wrong! This was such a powerful, fierce, and emotional story. It goes along with her Fallen Legacy series and is a bit of a prequel. It explains an integral part of the history behind it and is so, so good!

Some of my other favorites were The Hero of Parker City by Emily Grant, The Last Gateway by Cassandra Ham, The Boy with the Crows by Hope Ann, The Ways of War by Madison Brown, The Inheritance by Carrie Ann Noble, Name that Planet by Alex Mellen, and both stories from R.F. Gammon, To Catch a Killer and A Healing Touch. But really the list could go on and on. This was such an awesome anthology. There's something here for every fan of speculative fiction. I highly recommend it!

Review: One Little Lie (Pelican Harbor #1) by Colleen Coble

About the Book
It started with one little lie. But Jane Hardy will do everything in her power to uncover the truth.

When Jane Hardy is appointed interim sheriff in Pelican Harbor, Alabama, after her father retires, there's no time for an adjustment period. He is arrested for theft and then implicated in a recent murder, and Jane quickly realizes she's facing someone out to destroy her father.

They escaped from a cult fifteen years ago, and Jane has searched relentlessly for her mother—who refused to leave—ever since. Could someone from that horrible past have found them?

Reid Bechtol is a well-known journalist who makes documentaries, and his sights are currently set on covering Jane's career. Jane has little interest in the attention, but the committee who appointed her loves the idea of the publicity.

Jane finds herself depending on Reid's calm manner as he follows her around taping his documentary, and they begin working together to clear her father. But Reid has his own secrets from the past, and the gulf between them may be impossible to cross.

My Thoughts

It's been way too long since I've read a Colleen Coble book and I'm so glad I dove back in with One Little Lie. It was so good! It grabbed me at the very beginning and didn't let go. Once I reached the halfway point, I could not put it down and finished it in one afternoon. The mystery was superb and had me stumped until right before the big reveal. There wasn't much romance, but I'm hoping that will change in the sequel.

Full of diverse and interesting characters, the small town of Pelican Harbor really came to life. I'm excited to visit the town again in the next book, Two Reasons to Run, and to continue the journey alongside Police Chief Jane Hardy.
