Book Beginnings, First Line Friday, & Friday 56: Sunshine and Sin: Echoes of Olympus by Anna Hawke

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. I'm also linking up with Carrie at Reading is My Superpower for First Line Friday. Friday 56 asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your ereader and share a non-spoilery sentence or two. It was started by Freda at Freda's Voice, but Anne over at My Head is Full of Books has taken over for the time being.

This week I'm featuring Sunshine and Sin: Echoes of Olympus by Anna Hawke. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this no-spice reimagining of Greek myth. I loved it and am looking forward to more in this series.

SYNOPSIS
A cursed human. A cynical god. A bewildering prophecy that binds them together.

Apollo loathes the life he’s forced to lead. After an Oracle ties the sun god to a human who doesn’t recognize him, he must grapple with a dangerous mission and a woman who challenges him at every turn. As dark forces attack his throne, Apollo will either claim victory with Cyrene at his side or find devastating defeat.

Cursed by Zeus, Cyrene has struggled to make ends meet. When she accepts help from a man cast in mystery, an unexpected passion begins to burn between them. Despite their connection, she realizes that truth isn’t always what it seems—and the gods have wronged her before.

With every attack against the pantheon, more lives are lost. If Apollo and Cyrene can’t uncover the danger that lurks in the shadows, it may devour them whole.

Echoes of Olympus is a non-explicit shared world of dark fantasy and paranormal romance reimagining classic Greek myths through shadow and desire. Each story follows different myths, different couples, and a different descent into danger—where gods and mortals collide.

Book Beginnings / First Line Friday
Apollo was the most beautiful god.

Review: The Girl Upstairs by Jessica R. Patch

SYNOPSIS
She bought this house to save her marriage. Unearthing its secrets might just claim her life.

Gwen McDaniel’s life is broken. But she knows the perfect place to fix it. Cold Harbor, Maine, an idyllic small town with views of Acadia National Park, is where she used to vacation with her parents as a child. Here, she and Steven can start over, renovating their cliff-side fixer-upper while patching up their marriage. Soon, everything will be better.

Except from the moment they arrive, Gwen sees and hears things, and it’s more than just the drafts and shadows that are part of any old house. Steven downplays her fears, warning her not to fixate on problems as she has in the past. But Gwen spent years as a homicide detective, and her instincts don’t lie. Something happened here. Proof comes when she rips up the attic’s carpet to discover a chilling message carved into the wood underneath.

As Gwen delves into the history of the house and the Cold Harbor community, she begins to piece the fragments together. And gradually, a terrifying picture emerges: A missing girl. A house of horrors. And a dark, decades-old nightmare that is more haunting than Gwen ever imagined…

MY THOUGHTS

Y’all! This was such a masterful psychological thriller! Full of shocking twists and surprising turns, this superb read was nearly impossible to put down. I was completely and totally engrossed in it. I think it’s my new favorite Jessica R. Patch book.

The suspense and intrigue just kept ramping up the further into the book I got. I thought I had everything figured out, but there were several surprising twists and reveals that left me completely stunned. They blew my mind. As soon as I finished the book, I wanted to immediately start it over again to see all the clues I missed. I don’t want to say too much more, but my goodness, what a shock!

This book tackles some heavy and dark topics with grace. There were some truly disturbing things that happened, but things never got graphic, which I appreciated.

This is one of the best books I’ve read this year. I highly, highly recommend it. If you’re a fan of dark thrillers with a dash of hope, don’t hesitate to grab a copy. I loved it so much!

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Review: Lady Agatha Speaks Her Mind by Elisabeth Aimee Brown

SYNOPSIS
If anyone else had been her fairy godmother, Lady Agatha’s birthday party would have gone swimmingly.

It really wasn’t Agatha’s fault that she insulted all those guests. After preparing for years to receive a select list of suitors for her charming, fairy-blessed hand, the last thing she wanted to do was alienate the lot of them … but her godmother’s final gift was, well, difficult to control. Now her father doesn’t care that she didn’t mean to call the visiting foreign prince a pathetic little fungus—the damage has been done.

Prince Limplemoyne would’ve been more offended if he was actually attending the party to court Agatha, but that’s not what brought him to these backwoods, fairy-infested mountains. He just wants to find a godmother powerful enough to free him from the royal life he never asked for. But when a mischievous fairy answers his plea in an unexpected way, he finds himself suddenly stuck with the beautiful, sharp-tongued Lady Agatha. Fairies can’t help them get out of this unwanted alliance—they’ll have to stop bickering long enough to figure it out on their own.

Lady Agatha Speaks Her Mind is a no-spice, standalone reimagining of King Thrushbeard, perfect for readers who like both whimsy and comedy in their mutually-annoyed-strangers-to-lovers romance.

MY THOUGHTS

This book was so much fun! I was a big fan of Brown’s debut novel, What Comes of Attending the Commoners Ball, so this was one of my most anticipated reads this year. It was an absolute blast to read! It’s a King Thrushbeard retelling. I’m not super familiar with that fairy tale, but that didn’t hinder my enjoyment one bit. I loved it!

Neither main character was very likable in the beginning, which is usually a big turnoff for me, but it somehow worked really well here. They were awful in the most humorous and entertaining way. Plus, it was great seeing their character growth.

I thought it was really interesting how Agatha got a fairy gift on her birthday up to her 21st. And that 21st Gift was a doozy, lol! It caused all kinds of chaos! I thought Agatha’s fairy godmother was a hoot!

This was a really fun read. It had a lot of depth alongside the humor, too, which I really appreciated. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys no-spice fantasy.

"If only Melusine hadn't been your fairy godmother," Father says, "then we wouldn't have to worry about it." He stares out the window, glum despite the cheerful dancing of the late-spring leaves outside and the gentle breeze that carries in the scent of apple blossoms and honeysuckle.

Review: The Callers: The Hidden Forest: Book 2 by Kiah Thomas

SYNOPSIS
Return to the world of the Callers in this exciting middle-grade fantasy series that explores the amazing power of summoning objects into being and the ominous consequences of doing so. Perfect for fans of Rick Riordan.

The Callers, Book 1, which Printz Honor–winning author Garret Weyr called “beautifully told and engaging and just thrilling,” set the stage for a riveting series that introduced the world of Elipsom and its inhabitants’ unique ability to Call—or summon

In Book 2, a month has passed since Quin fled his home world of Elipsom after revealing the shocking truth about Calling: that the magic ability to conjure something out of thin air actually steals resources from another place. And that other place is Evantra, a nation suffering from exploitation by the Callers. Across the country, rumors are spreading that perhaps Calling isn’t a force for good after all. Even so, Quin’s sister, Davinia, has maintained calm under the pressure of her mother, the Chief Counselor of the Callers, who is determined to keep the status quo and quash anyone who questions the rightness of Calling. But when Davinia is assigned to investigate and plant evidence in a rebellious part of the city, her loyalties begin to waver.

Meanwhile, Quin and his friend Allie are in a race against the clock to heal the Vine, the source of all growing things in Evantra, which has been slowly dying. Their search leads them to a mysterious forest that may have the answers they seek—and the truth about Quin’s past.

Arresting and thought-provoking, this story explores some of the most crucial topics of our time and shows the power of standing up and fighting for a better tomorrow.

MY THOUGHTS

I started reading this book immediately after finishing the first one. And, I've gotta say, this sequel was just as entertaining and compelling! I was completely captivated by it!

I enjoyed seeing Quin’s character growth, and I loved seeing him embrace the truth of who he was. I also enjoyed seeing the friendship between him and Allie grow. They’re a great duo! I really enjoyed getting Davinia’s POV. She was wrestling with some things, and I was very curious to see how that would turn out.

This story ends on an even bigger cliffhanger than the first one, so I’m very anxious for the next book. It can’t come out soon enough!

Review: The Callers by Kiah Thomas

SYNOPSIS
Kenneth Oppel meets Andrew Clements in this riveting middle grade novel that will capture fantasy and fiction lovers alike as it thoughtfully explores the power of summoning, other worlds, and consumerism versus necessity.

Arresting, fast-paced, and thought-provoking, this nonstop middle grade adventure turns familiar magic upside down and inside out.

In the world of Elipsom, the ability to Call, or summon objects, is a coveted, crucial skill, revered among its people as both a powerful tool and an essential way to sustain life. But despite an elite family history, a phenom for an older sister, a best friend who is set to join the Council of Callers, and his mother's steely insistence that he learn to Call, Quin doesn't have the gift—an embarrassment made worse when his mother gets his sister to cheat for him on his Calling exam. But everything changes in a moment of frustration when Quin, instead of summoning an object, makes something disappear. And what's more, he quickly discovers that the objects Callers bring into their world aren't conjured at all but are whisked away from another world and a people who for years have had their lives slowly stolen from them. Now Quin must team up with Allie, a girl who's determined to stop this unfair practice, and decide whether he should remain loyal to his family or betray them—and save the world.

MY THOUGHTS

I really enjoyed this middle grade fantasy. It was unique, entertaining, and held my full attention. It had a bit of a dystopian feel to it, too, which I thought was done really well.

I really felt for Quin in the beginning. He felt like he was a letdown and a failure to his prestigious family. He didn’t have the ability to “Call” items like the rest of his family did. But I loved watching him grow and discover the truth about himself.

This was a fast-paced and quick read that I really enjoyed. It ended on a cliffhanger, though, so I’m very anxious to start the sequel! I’m curious to see what happens next!

I won this book in a giveaway and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Review: Until I Knew Youby Tanya Eavenson

ABOUT THE BOOK
Photographer Jacob Michaels has spent his life running, from foster homes, from emotional attachment, from anything that asks more of him than a fleeting moment through his camera lens, except for Clay Logan, his one true friend and the only person who ever saw past the walls.

Olivia Logan lives in a world of color and quiet, expressing through art what words cannot, and Clay understood her without explanation, offering a steady presence in a world that often feels overwhelming.

But when a hiking trip ends in tragedy and Jacob returns alone, everything changes, and Clay’s final request becomes Jacob’s new reality: take care of Olivia, protect her, don’t walk away.

Now her legal trustee, Jacob steps into a life he never intended. Bound by grief and a promise neither asked for, he and Olivia are drawn into a fragile closeness they don’t know how to navigate.

And perhaps God isn’t finished mending what was never meant to be broken.

MY THOUGHTS

I loved this book so much! It’s a stunning story of faith that left me speechless and teary-eyed. It had such a powerful message of hope amidst grief and learning to trust in God even through the hard spots.

I was instantly invested in the characters' lives and was rooting them on from the very start. I really felt for them in their grief.

I enjoyed getting to know Olivia. And I really appreciated the autism representation. She saw things through a unique lens, which I appreciated seeing. Jacob was a bit harsh in the beginning, but I loved seeing him get to know Olivia better and understand her better. Their character growth was amazing to see. Their journeys were very inspiring.

I didn’t want this book to end. I didn’t want my time with these characters to come to a close. They felt so authentic. I know I’ll be thinking about this story for a long time to come. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys heartfelt, emotional, and faith-filled stories. I loved it! It’s a new favorite story from author Tanya Eavenson.

About the Book
The apocalypse didn’t take everyone. It just took us.

Ever since the rain turned green, Kyrie’s world has been bathed in glowing dust. She packs it into old mascara tubes and sells it as makeup alongside dried cacti, threadbare blankets, and long-expired canned food. There’s not much else to do when everyone outside Kyrie’s small town in the Mojave Desert died from the plague-bearing rain ten years ago.

Everyone—except the man in the rubber mask.

He’s on the dangerous side of the fence, huffing infected air like it’s nothing, babbling to Kyrie about college and umbrellas and yogurt and everything else that disappeared the day it rained. He doesn't seem to know that the world ended, and he has no explanation for how he survived the apocalypse. But Kyrie doesn't believe in ghosts.

She can’t trust him, but he’s right about one thing: Towns without secrets aren’t surrounded by chain-link fences. And chain-link fences won’t keep out the plague forever.

Review: Warrior (Heroes of Renegade Book 2) by Lisa Phillips

SYNOPSIS
★ Some rescues require more than medical training. Some battles are worth the risk. ★

The last person Dr. Kira Yassan expects to walk back into her life is the soldier whose life she saved in a war zone three years ago.

She came to Renegade, Colorado to disappear—to work her ER shifts and forget the classified missions that nearly destroyed her soul. But when US Marshals drag her into a witness protection case, every carefully built wall comes crashing down.

Private investigator Luca Saxon thought the mysterious doctor who patched him up in Syria was just a beautiful memory. Now she's standing in front of him, and the chemistry that burned between them in that refugee camp hasn't dimmed. But someone wants their witness dead, and keeping Kira safe might cost him everything.

When cartel enforcers storm the hospital and prison riots explode across town, there's nowhere left to run.

Their witness is Francisco Abalos—former cartel kingpin with secrets that could topple governments. The shadow syndicate controlling Renegade wants him silenced. And Kira's medical expertise makes her the perfect target.

From midnight shootouts to explosive prison breaks, Luca and Kira race against time to expose a conspiracy that reaches into the highest levels of their small town. But as buried secrets surface and old enemies emerge, they must decide: Can love survive when trust becomes a weapon?

MY THOUGHTS

Action-packed right from the start, I could hardly put down this intense second installment of the Heroes of Renegade series. It starts off in Syria and then moves forward five years to the present day in Renegade, Colorado.

Saxon was an easy guy to like. He’s amiable, hardworking, and just an all-around good guy. It took a little longer for me to figure Kira out, but once I got to know her a little better and heard about her past, I ended up really liking her too.

I’m really looking forward to the next book! And highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys faith-filled romantic suspense. While this could technically be read as a standalone, I’d still recommend starting with Renegade first. There’s an overarching story thread that will run through the series. Plus, it’s fun to catch up with characters from the previous book!

Review: The Bookshop of 99 Doors by Jaime Jo Wright

SYNOPSIS
The manor's rumored one-hundredth door may conceal secrets hidden as deep as the estate's bookshelves extend high . . . but the haunted past has a way of ensnaring curious souls.

In 1888, Minnie Tipton finds herself beset by the dark superstitions that envelop the Pennsylvania mansion her father bought. Convinced the vengeful spirit of a Civil War captain haunts the house and worried by her father's rapidly worsening illness, Minnie delves into the home's fraught past in an effort to bring him peace. Yet the lingering impact of the war and the gruesome tale of murder she uncovers only foster more fear and threaten to unravel Minnie's own sanity.

In the present day, Triss Bellamy eagerly steps into the role of bookshop manager in the mansion-turned-museum boasting ninety-nine doors. But Triss's dream job turns into a nightmare when havoc breaks loose with the arrival of her brother's team of self-proclaimed paranormal investigators. Their determination to find a rumored one-hundredth door--a dangerous portal to the madness long said to plague the mansion--results in calamity, leaving Triss no choice but to hunt down the truth or watch her brother slip forever beyond her reach.

An atmospheric dual-time Gothic suspense masterfully penned by acclaimed author Jaime Jo Wright with themes of a Civil War-era ghost, a possible hidden door, and unexplained mysteries at a historic mansion's bookshop with a troubled past.

MY THOUGHTS

The Bookshop of 99 Doors is a new favorite! Jaime Jo Wright’s books are always some of my most anticipated reads. And, I’ve gotta say, this new release exceeded all of my very high expectations. I loved it so much!

Following Minnie Tipton in 1888 and Triss Bellamy in the present day, I was instantly intrigued by this suspenseful dual timeline. In books like this, I’m usually drawn to one timeline over the other, but I was equally invested in both. I couldn’t read it fast enough!

While this wasn’t too scary, there were a few times when I got goosebumps and chills down my spine. But I appreciated the explanations of what was really going on. And I loved the faith threads woven throughout both timelines. It was powerful and inspiring, especially given the subject matter.

Jaime Jo Wright is a master of Gothic fiction, and I can’t wait to read whatever she writes next. I highly, highly recommend this story!

SYNOPSIS
Fated to be his mate. Coerced to murder him.

Instead, she finds herself at the mercy of the man she’s been ordered to kill. The powerful leader proves she’s safe with him, but he’ll never truly be safe with her.

Even if Lark can break the compulsion that binds her, the true battle is yet to come. Will their desire deepen into a love that survives their traumatic past—or dooms their future?

MY THOUGHTS

I was so excited to dive into this book! I’ve loved the previous installments in the series, and I loved this one just as much. I feel like I become more invested in this storyworld and the characters with each new book.

I really liked Roman and Lark. He’s leading a rebellion against Julian, Lark’s father. And it just so happens that her father has sent her to kill Roman. Talk about twisty! I was so curious to see how that would play out!

I really felt for Lark and the way her father treated her and for what he was coercing her to do. But I loved seeing her blossom away from his influence.

This book was full of suspense and mounting danger. I was completely engrossed and didn’t want to set it down. There were many times when I wondered how everything was going to work out in the end. Things seemed pretty dire in spots! If you’re a fan of urban fantasy, don’t hesitate to start this series. It’s fantastic! I can’t wait for the next book!

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Review: Apollo (Discarded Heroes: Scions Book 2) by Ronie Kendig

SYNOPSIS
When Love Becomes the Ultimate Mission

From award-winning author Ronie Kendig comes a heart-stopping romantic suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page.

HE WAS TRAINED TO SAVE LIVES. SHE WAS BORN TO LIVE A LIE.

Owen Metcalfe thought his military career was over—two failed attempts at becoming an elite operator leave him questioning everything he believes about himself. When a desperate mercenary seeks help to rescue his daughter—a kidnapped princess—from the most dangerous royal family in the world, Owen discovers his true calling isn't about earning a beret or proving his worth to the Army.

It's about saving her.

Leighton Kingslake has spent her entire life guarding a deadly secret far from the Saudi princess who gave birth to her and the brutal king they fled. She’s lived in the shadows, knowing one wrong move could end not just her life, but her mother's as well. When she's violently torn from her safe world and imprisoned halfway around the globe, survival becomes her only goal.

Until a blue-eyed warrior crashes into her world and threatens everything.

This isn't just a rescue mission—it's a collision of two hearts that will either save them both or destroy them completely.

When Owen infiltrates the palace as Leighton's bodyguard sparks fly! She doesn’t want him ruining her plan, and he holds fast to his promise to bring her safely home. But with a vengeful king, murderous princes, and a deadly enemy closing in, they’re forced to set differences aside. Soon, begrudging respect breeds something far more powerful that becomes both their greatest strength and their most dangerous weakness.

MY THOUGHTS

This book was so good! I’ve always loved the Metcalfe family, so I was excited to revisit them and get to know Owen. I had a really hard time putting this book down. It gripped me from the very beginning and didn’t let go until the last word.

Owen was an easy guy to like. He felt like a failure. Like he didn’t measure up. Like he was always coming up short. But, man, he proved that wrong time and time again. He was an incredibly likable guy. Hardworking and loyal and just an all-around good guy.

I liked Leighton a lot and really felt for her. She was in a bad situation, to put it mildly. But I admired her fighting spirit and enjoyed seeing the way she and Owen worked together.

I appreciated the note from the author at the beginning of the book. It shed some light on the heartbreaking history that inspired the story.

The settings really came to life. And I thought the safari was amazing! They faced some seriously intense moments that had me holding my breath. But there were some really inspiring moments too. If you’re a fan of romantic suspense, don’t hesitate to grab a copy of this book. I loved it and highly recommend it! I’m really looking forward to the next in the series!

Review: Two Purloined Pillows (A Nimble Needle Mystery Book 2) by Allie Pleiter

SYNOPSIS
When 30-something graphic artist Shelby Phillips reluctantly returned to her small hometown outside Asheville, North Carolina to manage her mother’s needlepoint shop, she thought it was temporary. But getting entangled in murder investigations has a timeline of its own…

It’s been a little over a year since Shelby started managing Nina’s Nimble Needle following her office-romance and career implosion, and Shelby’s mom has finally handed her the reins—technically, at least. Next, Shelby is excited to oversee two well-known needlepoint designers who will be participating in the town’s first two-week-long arts festival . . .

Laura Bitters and Paul Bardo have each stitched up one-of-a-kind pillows that should be big wins for the Nimble Needle at the festival’s auction . . . until the pillows vanish amid a sudden string of shoplifting incidents.

To add to the knot in Shelby’s stomach, Laura proves highly anxious, while Paul is an egomaniac who believes Laura has been stealing his customers for years. But things go from bad to tragic when Laura behaves oddly at the auction dinner, then collapses—dead.

Soon after, Shelby makes a shocking discovery in Laura’s room at the local inn. Then tests reveal that Laura was poisoned. Resolved to piece together the truth, despite the police chief’s determination to keep her on the fringes, Shelby rallies her personal team, including her sister, Jessica, her friend Deb, and Jake, her potentially more than a friend. As an extra twist, a magazine reporter arrives with unsettling—yet useful—dirt that includes Laura and Paul.

What unravels is a skein of suspects, long-held resentment, bitter jealousy, and betrayal, from which Shelby will have to pull the one crucial thread tied to the killer: a murder-worthy motive . . .

MY THOUGHTS

This was such a great sequel! I enjoyed it just as much as One Sharp Stitch, the first book in the series!

It was great catching up with the characters again, especially the NYAGs, and hanging out in the charming small town of Gwen Lake.

The mystery was great! There were plenty of suspects, and I suspected each one at one point or another. I did keep going back to one person, though, which turned out to be correct. I was still surprised by it, though.

This masterful mystery kept me glued to the pages. I loved it! Even though this is book two in the series, it can stand alone perfectly fine. I highly, highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries, especially craft-related ones.

Can't Wait Wednesday: A Brewed Awakening by Pepper Basham

This week I'm featuring A Brewed Awakening by Pepper Basham releasing May 5.

SYNOPSIS
Daphne dreams of Mr. Darcy. Finn serves up pints and rock music. Can opposites attract when a tea shop princess meets her pub-owning rival?

In the charming mountain town of Wisteria, North Carolina, Daphne Austen clings to tradition like cream to a scone. She's built her life--and her late grandmother's tearoom, Tea Thyme--around all things English: delicate china, Jane Austen novels, and the comforting predictability of routine. The only thing threatening her perfectly ordered world? The loud, aggravatingly handsome Brit opening a pub next door.

After his ex-wife broke his heart and his business partner nearly destroyed his career, Finn Dashwood packed up his six-year-old daughter and left England behind. He's looking for a fresh start, and the last thing he needs is a fussy, tea-obsessed neighbor criticizing his every pint and playlist. It doesn't matter that she's ridiculously kind (to everyone else) and that his daughter is utterly fascinated by her. Finn's heart is not open to being broken again.

But disagreements turn into prank wars and then a competition when a high-profile wedding needs a last-minute caterer. The townsfolk are thrilled--Wisteria hasn't seen this much excitement since the county fair lost a goat.

When the wedding demands both sweet and savory fare, Daphne and Finn are forced to put down their swords and pick up their serving trays. Between burnt pastries, brewing tempers, trending hashtags (#SipsAndSpats, anyone?), and one very adorable little girl, rivalry soon gives way to reluctant friendship--and maybe something that feels suspiciously like chemistry.

Can a tea shop princess and a pub owner with a past mix their lives as seamlessly as clotted cream and jam . . . or will their differences keep them steeped in rivalry forever?

Review: Miss Fortune by Ashley Bustamante

SYNOPSIS
The moonlight gave her luck...love might take it away.

Since childhood, eighteen-year-old Nia has relied on the fortune stone—a gift from a boy who once saved her from drowning. Its magic, tied to the phases of the moon, brings her extraordinary luck…at the cost of a life spent in hiding from those who would exploit her.

But on the night of the dark moon, Nia is attacked by a nightmare creature and left for dead—only to awaken in an enchanted castle ruled by the enigmatic Neilos. He offers her a bargain: he’ll heal her damaged lungs, but only if she remains within the castle’s walls until the next dark moon.

There, Nia discovers the boy from her past, Enitan, now serves as Neilos’s guard. In stolen moments with Enitan, Nia uncovers a devastating truth: whenever he is near, her fortune stone falls silent. She can have her luck or Enitan…never both.

As Nia uncovers the castle's twisted secrets, she realizes the cost of staying may be more than she's willing to pay. Nia must choose: keep the magic that has protected her, or risk everything for love.

MY THOUGHTS

I absolutely adored this whimsical tale! I loved Bustamante’s Color Theory trilogy, so I was very eager to dive into this new book from her. It was fantastic! I was swept away into this fascinating storyworld and couldn’t get enough of it.

This book had such a unique premise. The world was vibrant and full of imaginative creatures and wonderful, fully fleshed out characters. I was so intrigued by the castle and its residents. And I loved all the puns!

I really enjoyed this book and loved the hints of Beauty and the Beast and Howl’s Moving Castle. I didn’t want the story to end! While it’s beautifully wrapped up, I’d love to visit this world and the characters again.

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Review: The Star-Blessed by Angie Dickinson

About the Book
Three legendary origins of power. Two royal bloodlines. One deadly curse.

The kingdom of Stelauris is slowly dying. A season of poison infects the air, earth, and water with increasing deadliness each year, and a deep love of gold and power infects the failing mind of the king. His only daughter and first in line to the throne, Princess Seren, lives in tightly controlled isolation. When she is suddenly thrust into royal society, she struggles to hide the strain of untamed magic awakening in her blood.

Seren’s newly appointed personal guard, Sir Corin, resents the exile of his people. As heir to a long-banished line of succession and the last of the land’s legendary protectors, he holds no loyalty for the current royal family and their history of unhinged cruelty.

As death steals over the kingdom and the schemes at court grow deadlier, the princess and the guard are forced to face their fears, their troubled pasts, and the cost of personal freedom.

The Star-Blessed is a reimagining and reinventing of two fairy tales: “Rumpelstiltskin” and “Cat-Skin” by the Brothers Grimm.

MY THOUGHTS

I always love a good fairytale retelling and I really enjoyed this one. This story reimagines Rumpelstiltskin and Catskin. I’m not familiar with Catskin, but Rumpelstiltskin is a favorite. I enjoyed seeing the nods to it.

I instantly felt for Seren. She was put in a new and stressful position. I thought she handled herself well, and I admired her strength and courage in the face of such daunting situations. I loved seeing her character growth throughout the story.

I was intrigued by Corin. There was a mysterious air about him, and I couldn’t figure out what to think of him at first. But I enjoyed getting to know him better.

There were some parts of the book that were unsettling and dark, but I thought it showed that Light will always overcome the darkness.

I became completely immersed in this story world. There were a few massive twists that I never saw coming. I was shocked! I look forward to reading more from Angie Dickinson. She’s quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

MY THOUGHTS

I loved this book so much! It had everything I love in a good romantic suspense! It was so action-packed. There was cattle rustling, vandalism, theft, a dangerous killer, and so much more! I couldn’t read it fast enough.

I was so excited to learn more about the Trouble Boys. I’ve been curious about them for a while now.

Things were complicated between Sierra and Rowan, to say the least. He’s back from the dead and has to earn her trust back after such a huge deception. Then, add their son Huck to the mix, the son he didn’t know about, and yeah, complicated sums it up. I really liked them both, though, and thought Huck was an adorable kid. I was rooting for everything to work out.

The first chapter grabbed my attention immediately and didn’t let go until the final word. It was such a compelling read! If you’re a fan of faith-filled romantic suspense, run and grab a copy of this book. You won’t be disappointed. I’m really looking for the next book in the series!
