Review: Waking Beauty by Brittlyn Gallacher Doyle

About the Book
Fairy tales always end with “and they lived happily ever after,” but what if there was more to the story?
When Princess Aurora Claire wakes up from her 100-year sleep, she thinks she’s found her happily ever after with Prince Damien. Her picturesque world is soon shaken when people in the castle start falling into a deep sleep. The charm of her prince charming begins to wear thin as they embark on a perilous journey to save the kingdom. Has she been falling in love with the wrong person all along? As she battles an enchanted forest and races against time to find the original fairy who saved them all, will she find a way to revive her kingdom and discover the secret to lasting happiness?

My Thoughts

Waking Beauty was a sweet and fun retelling of Sleeping Beauty. It starts immediately after Aurora, or Claire as she prefers to be called, is awakened by the prince. It gives us an extended version of the classic tale and a peek at what life is like after the 'happily ever after'.

I've always wondered what happens after the end. Do the characters live the life I imagine? Is it better? Worse? Well, Waking Beauty answers that question.

My favorite character was definitely James. He was an honorable guy with a great sense of humor. Loved him! The pacing was a little slow at times, but it did pick up in the last half of the book. I'd definitely recommend this to young readers who love fairytales.

I won this book in a giveaway and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

  1. It's a fun idea to continue the fairy tale beyond the usual happy ending. Kind of like the second half of Into the Woods.

  2. Sounds like I would like this one. I like retelling and that fact that this picks up where the story ended. Great pick!
