Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week I'm featuring Fire Mountain (Elements of Danger #1) by Dana Mentink releasing July 1.

About the Book
In the shadow of a threatening volcano, long-haul trucker Kit Garrido wakes up in her crashed big rig, unable to recall what happened or why she's suddenly in possession of someone's baby. Fiercely independent, she has to admit that perhaps this time she could use a little help.

As the threat of eruption grows, former cop Cullen Landry refuses to leave his cabin in the evacuation area, which is why he's the only one left who can help Kit escape the crumpled cab of her truck. He doesn't want to get tangled up in the mystery of the beautiful woman with an abandoned infant, but when he sees the bullet hole in the windshield and the bloody handprint on the interior, he realizes that he's in this thing, like it or not.

When two armed men with ill intent approach, the race is on to stay alive, discover the truth, and find the baby's missing mother--all while a deadly mountain rains fire from above.

Experience the explosive start to this nail-biting series from USA Today bestselling author Dana Mentink!

MY THOUGHTS

What a clever sci-fi retelling of Little Red Riding Hood! I loved it! I was pulled right into the story. The worldbuilding was great. Vivid and detailed but never overwhelming.

Ava was endearing and easy to like. I thought her special ability was really interesting. I loved seeing the special and loving bond she had with her grandma. I also really liked her pet, Mo.

I didn’t know what to think of Blaiz at first, but he was very intriguing. I enjoyed getting to know him, his motives, and his background.

I really, really, really didn’t like Vujic. What a horrible man! I was so hoping he’d get his comeuppance!

I’m glad this is the start of a new series! I’m very eager for more stories set in this world! I can’t wait!

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

About the Book
Welcome to the Barks & Beans Cafe, a quaint place where folks pet shelter dogs while enjoying a cup of java...and where murder sometimes pays a visit.

The Barks & Beans booth at the Renaissance Faire is hopping, since Macy managed to talk her muscled redhead brother into donning a kilt for the occasion. Even better, Macy's boyfriend Titan has come for a visit, so she can't wait to peruse the shops and watch the shows with him.

But when a well-rehearsed joust takes a fatal turn, Macy becomes a key witness. Can she believe her eyes, or did someone cloak their ruthless intent with smoke and mirrors? A late night stakeout seems the only way to determine what really happened...but someone scarier than the plague doctor is lying in wait for Macy, and this time, the damsel might not find a way out of her distress.

Join siblings Macy and Bo Hatfield as they sniff out crimes in their hometown...with plenty of dogs along for the ride! The Barks & Beans Cafe cozy mystery series features a small town, an amateur sleuth, and no swearing or graphic scenes.

Book Beginnings / First Line Friday
As I took a huge bite of my Italian sub, my Great Dane Coal licked his lips, but managed to keep himself firmly planted at the top of my brother's back deck steps. He was aware that if he intruded on our meal, I'd put him inside, where Bo's incorrigible calico Stormy was anxiously awaiting her chance to pounce on his tail.

Friday 56
Since Titan was having lunch with Julius, I decided to use my break to do a little fairground sleuthing on behalf of August.

Review: Meet Me at The Grand (Jonathon Island #1) by Lindsay Harrel

About the Book
The Jonathon Island series is created by USA Today bestselling, award-winning author Susan May Warren.

The last thing she needs is for some big-city know-it-all to destroy everything she loves…

Tourism director Dani Sullivan is desperate to save her island home from bankruptcy—and that means rebuilding the Grand Sullivan Hotel, a once-glorious hotel that burned to the ground ten years ago. And, in the aftermath, tore apart her family. So yes, she’ll bring in an outside developer to help ignite the project. But his too-modern, out-of-touch vision isn’t at all what Jonathon Island needs…or is it?

It’s his last chance to get everything he wants…and she’s standing in the way.

Architect Liam Stone isn’t a fan of small towns located in the middle of nowhere. But when his about-to-retire father hands him the assignment to rebuild the Grand, it’s his chance to prove he can take over the company. Only problem—the stubborn tourism director-slash-protector of Jonathon Island refuses to see things his way.

Maybe Liam can change her mind. Except Dani’s plan is the same. Change Liam’s mind, make him see what he might be missing. Hopefully without getting her heart involved.

And when another builder shows up with big plans…suddenly Liam sees what’s at stake, and it isn’t only the Grand Hotel. But is it too late to save everything he’s started to love?

It’s a battle for the future of Jonathon Island in this heartwarming fish-out-of-water, rivals, and fresh-starts small-town romance, the first in the Jonathon Island series.

MY THOUGHTS

What a great start to this new series! I absolutely adored Jonathon Island. It's such a charming and cozy place. There was something so comforting about it. Something that felt like home. If it were a real place, I'd love to visit.

This book is full of so many wonderful and complex characters. Dani was a great heroine. I loved her passion for Jonathon Island and her dream of revitalizing the place and bringing back tourism. Even though there were some people around her that had given up on the island, she never did. I appreciated how family-oriented she was and how she wanted to bring her family back together.

It took a couple of chapters for me to figure out what I thought of Liam, but it wasn't long before I completely fell for him. I loved his dedication and his hardworking attitude. I also really liked seeing the bond between him and his dad.

Dani and Liam were complete opposites. They were both very stubborn too. They definitely didn't see eye-to-eye on a lot of things, but they sure did have amazing chemistry!

I'm very eager to visit Jonathon Island again. If you're a fan of sweet contemporary romance with a small-town vibe, grab a copy of this book. You won't be disappointed.

Review: A Lethal Engagement by April J. Skelly

About the Book
An airship bound for London is thrown off course by a murder on the first night of its transatlantic voyage in this locked-room historical mystery debut, perfect for fans of Deanna Raybourn and Katharine Schellman.

1890. American heiress, Cora Beaumont is celebrating her engagement to Terrance Tristan, the second son of a duke. Their union will solidify Cora's place in British society and put her in a rare position of power, but as they embark on the Lady Air’s maiden voyage to England, Cora soon finds that not everyone in society is accepting of her recent engagement, and tensions fly as high as the airship. When a body is discovered the first night on the ship, with a calling card for Cora on the victim, she’s determined to find the killer hidden among the passengers before they come for her next.

As Cora tries to solve the murder without attracting unsavory attention, her fiancé’s wandering eye may cause even more problems for her position in society. Gossip travels fast aboard the airship and bad news could sink the Lady Air, as well as Cora's own social status, before they reach their final destination. When more bodies are discovered, Cora teams up with her soon-to-be brother-in-law, Nicholas, as they scour the ship for clues. If she fails, it won’t only be her reputation visiting the undertaker.

No one is who they seem in this Gilded Age locked room historical mystery, perfect for fans of And Then There Were None and Alyssa Maxwell.

MY THOUGHTS
“Engagements are lethal creatures.”
I had a blast reading this historical mystery. I loved the time period, and I really enjoyed the setting of the airship. It gave the story a bit of a steampunk vibe, which I loved.

I liked that the story was told from both Cora and Nicholas’ points of view. While there were a few times in the middle of a chapter that I forgot who was narrating it, I figured it out again fairly quickly, so it didn't bother me too much.

I really liked Cora and Nicholas, but I think Ophelia was my favorite character. She had such a vibrant and fun personality. She certainly kept things lively!

The mystery was very intriguing. It definitely kept me guessing! I ended up being very surprised by the reveal.

I really enjoyed this book and hope there’s a sequel! I’d love to revisit these characters again. If you’re a fan of historical mysteries, grab a copy of this book. I highly recommend it.

Charlotte may have wanted Acelynn’s life, yet now that she’s living it, she wants out. But if she reveals the truth about herself, it will mean returning to her old life—and she’s already a dead woman there.

MY THOUGHTS
“Truth hidden in darkness always comes to light, and secrets with it. Sins always find you out.”
Y’all! This book was so good! Full of secrets, lies, danger, and duplicity, this dark and twisty thriller was completely engrossing. I was hooked from the first sentence until the final word. I’ll be thinking about it for a long time. It’s a definite contender for best book of the year.

I had a lot of theories, but they were constantly changing. I never knew who or what to trust. And while I figured out a couple of things, there were plenty of surprises that left me completely shocked.

I appreciated the fact that the author tackled serious topics such as addiction and mental illness. I also appreciated that even though this was a dark and, at times, disturbing book, there was a ray of hope in the end.

This is the best psychological thriller that I’ve read! If you’re a fan of the genre, it’s a must read. I can’t recommend it highly enough!

Can't Wait Wednesday: Everything's Coming Up Rosie by Courtney Walsh

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week I'm featuring Everything's Coming Up Rosie by Courtney Walsh releasing June 10.

About the Book
Sometimes what you think you want and what you actually want turn out to be different things . . .

Rosie Waterman has one dream: to become a working actor. But lately, that hasn't been working out. When she loses her apartment and her job on the same day, she does what she always does--puts herself out there, ready to find the next big thing. But a trip home makes her realize that while she's been struggling to make this dream come true, all her friends have become real adults with careers and weddings and babies on the way. Rosie's been at this for years, and she has nothing to show for it. But how does she simply let go of her dream?

When she's offered a job as the director of a regional theatre's production of Cinderella, she jumps at the chance--even though she's only directed in college and the job is in Door County, Wisconsin, and not in New York. She has no other offers, and at least she'll be getting paid to do something theatrical. But when she arrives, she quickly realizes that the "regional theatre" is actually in a retirement community, and the "actors" are actually senior citizens with no acting experience whatsoever.

Working on the show presents new challenges, forcing Rosie to learn how to step up and be the leader this fledgling theatre troupe needs. The more time she spends with her new cast, the more she begins to rethink what it means to dream big, especially when that big dream hasn't turned out to be at all what she thought it would be. It's not at all what she expected, but could it be exactly what she needs?

Review: Master of Memories by Lani Forbes

About the Book
In a grim not-so-distant future where debt and drugs run rampant, Margot Azenari studies memory editing alongside the offspring of the rich and famous. She dreams of erasing the bad memories from her childhood-of her father's involvement with the Vibora drug cartel and her mother's struggle with addiction. Margot makes plans to escape the pain of her past, but her plans go awry when her mentor, Dr. Xander, asks for her help with a top-secret project.

Margot has always admired her classmate Isaac, a senator's son, who once saved her from a mean prank. She's shocked to find him in Dr. Xander's office unconscious and bruised after a recent plane crash. Just as Margot and Dr. Xander finish erasing dangerous memories from Isaac's brain, Dr. Xander gives Margot an urgent mission-she alone must return the memories that they've removed from Isaac, or the lives of thousands of people will be in jeopardy. Their conversation is cut short as two Vibora drug cartel goons break in. Margot hides as they shoot Dr. Xander.

Margot makes contact with Isaac, and the two agree to try to put the memories back. Slowly, they piece together a connection between the cartel and the US government...and how Isaac tried to discover the truth. Battling her own growing romantic feelings for Isaac, Margot finds herself stuck in the middle of a government conspiracy where Isaac's father is the main suspect. As they race to reinsert the memories, they find themselves walking a treacherous line, not knowing who they can trust.

Or if they can trust each other.

MY THOUGHTS
“We can’t change yesterday, and we have no idea what tomorrow will ask of us. All we have is now, and now is everything.”
What a stunning story! Thought-provoking and incredibly relevant to our time right now, I could hardly put it down. I finished it in record time.

I was transported inside the pages of this vibrant and dangerous world. The worldbuilding was excellent, and the memory editing technology was fascinating and slightly scary.

I liked Margot right from the start. I admired how resilient and kind she was despite all the things she had gone through. I loved watching her journey and her character growth.

I appreciated the lighter moments amidst the serious subject matter. The fake dating angle was a lot of fun.

This book has left a lasting impression on me. I know I’ll be thinking about it for a long time to come. I loved that even though this book deals with some hard and serious topics, it also showed that there is light and hope too. I can’t recommend it highly enough. I loved it.

But without the funds to restore the hotel, Dani’s forced to accept help from Liam Stone—a big-city hotel developer whose sleek, modern vision is everything she’s trying to avoid.

Liam has never been one for small towns or rundown hotels, but this project isn’t just any job. His father’s health is declining, and if Liam can prove himself by turning the hotel around, he’ll finally earn the chance to take over the business so his dad can retire. But Jonathon Island is far from the high-end luxury projects he’s used to, and Dani’s fierce dedication to preserving its history clashes with everything Liam stands for.

As they battle over the future of the Grand, Liam starts to see Jonathon Island as more than just another project—it feels like the home he’s never had. But with his responsibilities pulling him back to Los Angeles, can he really stay? And can Dani trust him with her dream—and her heart?

Review: Some Like It Scot by Pepper Basham

About the Book
She lives her life on the fly. His heart is double-knotted to home. Can two different souls create a life together?

Popular travel writer and podcaster Katie Campbell roams the world collecting other people's stories. She's built a career as "Miss Adventure," known for saying yes to anything new--country, food, or experience--and predictably finding those adventures taking a downward turn into misadventures.

Offered the chance to explore her ancestral roots through a three-week Edwardian experience, Katie finds herself immersed in the beauty and eccentricity of Scotland. In her period attire, with traditional foods and activities, the opportunities for misadventures are endless, especially with the presence of a maniacal macaw, a jealous co-worker, and an all-too-surly Scotsman.

Reclusive and protective Graeme MacKerrow doesn't venture far from his island home. A stoic Scotsman, Graeme's comfort zone has always been family, and after his sister's death, he's even more determined to save the MacKerrow ancestral home and keep those he loves close. The sudden intrusion of a six-foot-one American lass, famous for her traveling misfortunes, was far from his plan.

As this world of folklore, community, and woodworkers-in-kilts tempts Katie to discover her own story, could this one grand series of misadventures lead her directly to where she belongs? And would a settled-in-Scot ever risk loosening his grip on what's familiar to allow a wanderlust writer a home in his heart? How could their very different worlds share the same page of life's story when "home" is in two very different places? But maybe home--and the future--isn't quite what either one imagined it would be. Maybe home is less about a place . . . and more about a person.

MY THOUGHTS

This book was so good! It featured many hilarious, laugh-out-loud moments but also had a lot of depth too. It pulled at my heartstrings many times.

Katie was a great heroine. Famous for her misadventures in her job as a travel writer, she's earned the nickname Miss Adventure. And while she had many mishaps during her Scottish trip, I loved how she'd get right back up and laugh it off. The first time that Katie and Graeme met was... memorable, to say the least, lol! Graeme was such a lovable grump. Swoony isn't a strong enough word to describe him. I adored his tight-knit family too. Lachlan and his dog were adorable helpers and guides. And Graeme's mom was so sweet.

The descriptions of Scotland were so great and vivid. I've never been, but I felt like I was actually there!

I thought the "Edwardian Experience" was such a cool idea. I wouldn't say it went off without a hitch here, but it was a lot of fun to read about and led to a lot of laughs.

This book left a big smile on my face. I really enjoyed it and look forward to whatever author Pepper Basham comes out with next. I highly recommend it to people who enjoy no spice, swoony romances.

I received a copy of this book via NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Book Beginnings, First Line Friday, & Friday 56: Some Like It Scot by Pepper Basham

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. I'm also linking up with Carrie at Reading is My Superpower for First Line Friday. Friday 56 asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your ereader and share a non-spoilery sentence or two. It was started by Freda at Freda's Voice, but Anne over at My Head is Full of Books has taken over for the time being.

This week I'm featuring Some Like It Scot by Pepper Basham. I just finished it and loved it! It had me laughing out loud in several spots.

Book Beginnings / First Line Friday
I'd love to say I became famous because of my excellent writing skills. Doesn't that sound like a superb reason for fame? Or, at the very least, a wonderful way to pay the bills.

Friday 56
"You look a bit peely-wally, Katie." Lachlan slowed his pace and glanced from me to the terrifying creatures. "You don't like sheep?"

Can't Wait Wednesday: The Curious Inheritance of Blakely House by Joanna Davidson Politano

This week I'm featuring The Curious Inheritance of Blakely House by Joanna Davidson Politano releasing April 15.

About the Book
It is 1901 when clockmaker and brilliant tinker Sydney Forrester inherits Blakely House, the eclectic estate of an estranged uncle she's never met. The well-known but mysterious industrialist has left behind a stunning array of peculiar inventions--and a couple of nephews intent on removing this interloper from the estate. Convinced that Sydney has something to do with their uncle's death, the late master's nephews contest the will and work against their cousin at every turn.

Sydney finds a sometimes-ally in the estate's butler, an ex-adventurer who ran aground on the island years ago. But when a mysterious man washes ashore with a stunning surprise that upsets everything, Sydney must prove she has inherited the late master's brilliance as well as his property--or someone else will.

What upcoming release are you eagerly awaiting?

Review: Rune by Victoria McCombs

About the Book
PERHAPS WE ARE SAVAGES AFTER ALL

Rune wants only one thing from the gods: the heart of a boy who already claims to love her. She wants it enough that she's willing to make a deal with a god to keep it.

The deal is simple: the heart of the boy, and in return, Rune will make this god revered among the clan.

Then, out of nowhere, the boy proposes to Rune's sister instead.

In her anger, she renounces the gods. But the gods have plans of their own. They snatch Rune from earth and throw her in Asgard, claiming her as their lost goddess and drowning her in a world of dangerous power. It's clear a god is pulling the strings here, but Rune can't guess who, or what her role is in their games. Desperate, she strikes a second deal with a god-one who might be as broken and twisted as she, and quite possibly more capable of breaking her heart than anyone. As her Viking past finds a way into Asgard, it's clear that someone's heart will be slaughtered. She can only hope to be long gone before it all crashes down.

A standalone fantasy for lovers of the fake engagement trope, shields and axes, or poison in teacups.

MY THOUGHTS

I haven't read many Viking books, nor ones about Norse mythology, so this book was very interesting! I think because I wasn't super familiar with the lore, it took me just a little bit to get into, but once I got my bearings, I was fully invested and flying through the pages. I ended up loving it. It's one of my favorites that I've read this year. The worldbuilding was fantastic. Vivid and Immersive. And the characters were great. Fully fleshed out and dynamic.

Rune was a very sympathetic character. At the beginning of the story, it seemed like nothing was going her way. She couldn't seem to catch a break. But I loved how determined she was. She was fierce and spirited and never backed down. It was great to watch her come into her own and discover her true self.

This was exciting and action-packed. The pace steadily climbed until it reached its peak at the thrilling conclusion. This book is going on my favorites shelf. I loved it so much and highly, highly recommend it!
