Can't Wait Wednesday: Midnight on the Scottish Shore by Sarah Sundin

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week I'm featuring Midnight on the Scottish Shore by Sarah Sundin releasing February 4.

About the Book
The only way Cilla van der Zee can survive the German occupation of the Netherlands is to do the unthinkable--become a spy for the Nazis in Britain. She soothes her conscience with a plan to abandon her mission and instead aid the Allies. Her scheme is thwarted when naval officer Lt. Lachlan Mackenzie finds her along the Scottish shore and turns her in to be executed.

But perhaps she is more useful alive than dead. British intelligence sends her to Scotland to radio misleading messages to Germany, messages about the naval base at Scapa Flow to be crafted by Lachlan. At the station in the lighthouse at Dunnet Head, Lachlan and Cilla must work together if the war is to be won. But how can he trust a woman who arrived on his shores as a tool of the enemy--a woman certain to betray both him and the Allied cause?

Master of World War II fiction Sarah Sundin takes you to the wild Scottish seaside, where danger lurks under the surface of the water--and in the depths of the human heart--for a WWII tale you won't soon forget.

What upcoming release are you eagerly awaiting?

Review: Madeleine’s Mistletoe Meet Cute by Ellie Hall

About the Book
I’m a ghostbaker—covertly making Christmas cookies for the dough-challenged—and a virtual assistant on the side. When an impossibly attractive guy in flannel kisses me under the mistletoe, sparks fly, then fizzle. He’s my boss.

Maddie
You know the saying, “Things are coming up roses”? More like they’re last year’s wilted and withered poinsettias. To cap off a series of unfortunate events, I accidentally sent my boss another client’s content. He didn't find the first kiss quote social media graphic amusing. Despite never meeting face-to-face, I doubt anything could make the grumbler smile.

However, when I get a cookie baking contract in a charming small town, I can’t help but think this is my big chance to pay off Gran’s medical bills. Then I realize I’m competing with the enemy: Stone’s Coal Co., my boss’s business.

Duffy
My mother fancies herself Mrs. Claus. She and her merry band of matchmaking elves are determined to find me “The One.” Home for the holidays, the “Not-The-One” who single-handedly ruined me for romance, is at the company holiday party. Acting rashly, I kiss a cute woman under the mistletoe. When our lips touch, it’s nothing short of a Christmas miracle. But it turns out she’s my virtual assistant.

Instead of stomping on the brakes, we go on a fake dating spree, resulting in entering the Annual Christmas Charity Bake & Bazaar Auction. I tell myself after the oven timer dings, it’ll be over. But I’m tangled in tinsel as secrets and lies pile up.

Even if we leave Santa cookies, I have a feeling if we keep up the charade, we’ll end up with coal in our stockings. But can we somehow make it work and land on the “Good List?”

This is a clean, sweet, closed door, small town, Christmas romantic comedy featuring a grumpy boss, mistaken identity, a fake relationship, a chorkie named Pop Tart, and lots of holiday merriment.

MY THOUGHTS

This was such a cute story! It’s a quick read, but the length felt just right.

The grumpy/sunshine trope is my favorite, and it’s done so well here. Duffy was such an endearing grump while Maddie was likeable and easy to relate to. I also loved her dog. Pop Tart was adorable!

I’d never heard of a “ghostbaker” before, so that was really neat to read about.

I loved the town of North Pole! It was so charming and full of Christmas cheer!

There were so many laugh out loud moments in this book. I had a blast reading it. This was my first book by this author, but it won’t be the last. I’m eager to read more from her.

Review: Giver of Wonders by Roseanna M. White

About the Book
A miracle once saved her life ~ will another give her a future?

Cyprus was little more than a child when a fall left her paralyzed...and when the boy known as the wonder-worker healed her. Ever since, she has wondered why the Lord spared her, what he has in store for her. But her pagan father thinks she was spared solely so she could be introduced to the wealthy wonder-worker, Nikolaos.

Nikolaos has never questioned that his call in life is to dedicate himself to the church and to God. Never, that is, until he and his cousin Petros meet the compelling Cyprus Visibullis. For years he struggles with the feelings she inspires...and with the sure knowledge that Petros loves her too.

Petros knows he will never be good enough for Cyprus's father to consider him as a match for his favorite daughter not as long as Nikolaos is there. But when tragedy strikes the Visibullis family, he will do anything to save his beloved. Unfortunately, his beloved is determined to do anything to save her sisters ~ even at the cost of herself.

As the festival of lights bathes their Greek city in beauty, Cyprus, Petros, and Nikolaos celebrate the miracle of their Savior s birth together one last time. And in remembrance of their Lord's greatest gift, one of them will make the ultimate sacrifice for the others...and a centuries-long tradition will be born.

MY THOUGHTS

What a beautiful story! I loved how fully God was woven into every page. It was inspiring and hope-filled. The characters faced troubles. Many, in fact. There was a lot of strife, but they trusted in the Lord, and I loved seeing that!

I really liked the characters, and I loved seeing their passion for the Lord. Cyprus was misunderstood by her neighbors and was striving to be good enough for the miracle that healed her—trying to find her purpose. Her relationship with her sisters was so sweet to see. The way they loved each other and sacrificed for each other was so inspiring. Petros was so kind and selfless. And Nikolaus was such an inspiration. It was amazing to see the kind of faith he had.

This story really brought a whole new perspective to Santa Claus. It made me see the tradition in a whole new light, which I greatly appreciated. I’ve been disheartened by the commercialism of the holiday, so it was wonderful to read about the origin of Santa Claus and to see how God-honoring it was in the beginning.

This story broke my heart at times, but it also pieced it back together. This was a beautiful love story. Not just the romantic kind, but also the love God has for His children. I loved it so much and highly, highly recommend it!

- Patara, Lycia
She would die today, one way or another. Cyprus Visibullis risked one glance over her shoulder without slowing her feet. They still pursued, those lecherous sailors, shouting words at her that would make Mater’s face flush scarlet if she could hear.

Friday 56
The room filled as she prayed. With the scent of the cooking meat, with the music of the rain, and with the certainty that her Lord was right there, at her side. She had only to listen for him, and she would hear his voice.

MY THOUGHTS

What an exciting and action-packed conclusion to this series. I’ve enjoyed every book, and this wraps things up in such a great way. It was a thrilling race against time. There was a missing nuke, raging wildfires, and bad guys on the loose. There was never a dull moment! The lightning-fast pace and escalating danger had me flipping through the pages as fast as possible.

I really liked Jade and Crispin. They were both strong-willed and determined, and had amazing chemistry. Their banter was so much fun!

I loved the strong message of faith woven throughout the pages. My favorite quote was: “Why worry about things I can’t control? I have today. And that’s all I need to worry about.” What a great reminder!

If you’re a fan of action-packed romantic suspense, you’ll love this series! I highly recommend it!

Review: Empire of Ruin: Book 1 by Merrie Destefano

Will she rise as a hero, or fall as a monster?

By USA Today bestselling author and award-winning author, Merrie Destefano.

MY THOUGHTS

This book completely blew me away! I’ve loved everything I’ve read by this author, but Empire of Ruin might just be my new favorite. It was such an imaginative story! It had impressive worldbuilding, complex characters, and an intriguing plot. I was hooked from the first page to the last and didn’t want it to end.

I was so intrigued by the Invaders. What were they? Why were they there? What was their purpose? I needed to know!

There was a feeling of unease and creeping danger throughout the book. I was so nervous for the characters. I got goosebumps several times.

Everything about this story was so vivid and had an authentic, almost haunting feel about it. And even though it’s a fantasy story, it felt real. This story came to life. I absolutely loved it and highly, highly recommend it! I can’t wait for the next one!

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

Can't Wait Wednesday: Cloaked in Beauty (Texas Ever After) by Karen Witemeyer

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week I'm featuring Cloaked in Beauty (Texas Ever After) by Karen Witemeyer releasing December 17.

About the Book
In the heart of the Piney Woods of Texas, Letty Hood has spent the last fifteen years of her life hidden away with her grandmother to escape the deadly schemes of an uncle who wants her dead. Now, with her twenty-first birthday on the horizon, she is forced to accept the escort of a stranger and return to Houston in secret so she can claim a birthright that will make her one of the wealthiest women in Texas. If she lives long enough to inherit.

Pinkerton agent Philip Carmichael has one duty: get the Radcliffe heiress home alive. Expecting a spoiled girl, Philip is surprised to encounter a woman of rare strength with a kind soul and keen wit. As they journey together, Letty's resilience wins his admiration, breaking through his hardened cynicism. Yet the threat to Letty grows more menacing with every mile, and Philip fears that keeping her out of harm's way may be just as impossible as keeping her out of his heart.

"Little Red Riding Hood" and "Sleeping Beauty" entwine for a romantic fairy tale retelling that explores the power of true love conquering even the darkest of nights.

Review: Most Likely to Die (True Crime Junkies #8) by Christy Barritt

About the Book
When a plane goes down in the Alaskan wilderness, so does the senator onboard . . .

With voting for the proposed oil drilling project only days away, former defense attorney Andi Slade knows what happened to the senator was no accident. It was a calculated and ruthless attack by Victor Goodman, the man who ruined Andi’s reputation and career.

As Andi and her friends, members of The Round Table podcast, join forces to put an end to Victor’s destruction once and for all, the stakes rise to a new level.

The team has had their share of differences in the past, but they can all agree on one thing: justice comes with a price. As they fight for their lives in a killer’s twisted game, one question remains . . . who will be the most likely to die?

MY THOUGHTS

Full of intrigue and gripping suspenseful moments, this book was impossible to put down. The danger was high, and so was my anxiety. Just when I’d think things couldn’t get worse, they did. I couldn’t read fast enough.

I’ve loved getting to know these characters throughout the series, and I’ve enjoyed seeing them overcome some seriously daunting (and dangerous) obstacles. I’ve been eager for the villain to get his comeuppance, and things come to a head quite spectacularly here.

While this book wraps up the longstanding mysteries of the series, I’m so glad this isn’t the end! I’m excited for this group of podcasting friends to solve more mysteries! I can’t wait for the next one!

Review: A Soul as Cold as Frost (The Winter Souls #1) by Jennifer Kropf

About the Book
“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good fright…”

What if St. Nicholas was really a young, mad trickster and you had the one thing he wanted? What if the only person who agreed to protect you from him had a past of letting those he’s meant to protect die? What if you were in the wrong place at the wrong time, and you gained the ability to see a whole other world tucked into the cracks of your own?

Helen Bell is a student with a past she’d rather not remember and a high school social life that doesn’t exist. Almost everyone she passes either forgets she’s there or doesn’t notice her in the first place. Though it’s hard to live like a shadow, she survives by focusing on her studies.

Until the day everything changes.

When a strange encounter leaves Helen able to see a species of invisible people among us, naturally she assumes she’s going delusional or is getting ill from the cold Canadian weather. But when a young, handsome Winter guardian appears to aid her in a crisis, and a train horn starts blasting over the city in a search to hunt her down, she finds herself in the middle of a war where nothing is quite as it seems, and what’s “right” isn’t always right.

“No matter what happens,” her Winter guardian warns as creatures all down the street begin to shriek and freeze in place, “Don’t move a muscle…”

Zane Cohen is a young, retired Patrolman. Even though he craves mischief and would rather play tricks on snow rabbits than get dragged back into the guardian life, he finds he can’t help himself when he meets Helen Bell. She’s not suitable to play the games of the Rime Folk. If she’s not careful, she’s going to get herself killed. And he shouldn’t care, but…

But a long time ago, he believed in an ancient “Truth”. This same Truth begins calling Helen’s name across the snow, forcing her to make the ultimate decision to either run back to her empty life, or do the unthinkable—to face off with the Snow Queen in The Quarrel of Sword and Bone; a match that takes place in a Winter arena before one thousand witnesses and will likely mean certain death.

So, the retired Patrolman becomes not so retired after all.

A Soul as Cold as Frost is Jennifer Kropf's debut novel, ideal for fans of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis, and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms by Meredith Rusu and Ashleigh Powell.

Book Facts:
*The Winter Souls Series is an adventure for ages 10+, loved by teens and parents alike.

*A Soul as Cold as Frost was rewrittenreimagined, and reformatted with illustrations by Kyannah Durocher in 2024 for a better reading experience.

MY THOUGHTS

I really enjoyed this whimsical and cozy portal fantasy. It transported me and even invaded my dreams. It’s a story the whole family will love. I can imagine reading this will become an annual Christmas tradition.

The worldbuilding was great, and the characters were fully fleshed out and interesting. Main character Helen was likable. I appreciated her resiliency and determination as she was thrust into a dangerous and strange situation. I thought she handled herself really well, all things considered.

I enjoyed visiting Winter, learning the lore, and meeting all the different Folk.

I loved that this story focused on the true meaning of Christmas! What a fantastic allegory! It was so meaningful and impactful. I’m so glad this is the beginning of a series! I’m eager to read more!

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

A prayer is how this story begins
'Twas a thought no larger than a button, no tastier than honey or hope, slipping out into the midnight hush by the mouth of a mother before she passed.

Friday 56
Panic was a disease. It could start as something small like a simple fear - something that might not have been enough to stir logic from a mind and spread sickness into the rest of a body. But my panic now bled into a monster of tunnel vision, erasing my memories and all thoughts of the future.

Goodreads TBR Cleanup #2

I saw this meme over on Dark Shelf of Wonders and thought it was such a neat idea, so I wanted to give it a try.

How It Works:
  • Go to your Goodreads want-to-read shelf.
  • Ask Siri to pick a number between 1 and however many books are on the list.
  • Go to that book and look at it and the 4 after it, for a total of 5.
  • Read the synopses of the books.
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?
  • Discuss here.
Original Creator: Mega Bunny Reads

The number I got was 2685 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣 (I have a ridiculous amount of books on my TBR list. To be fair, there are a lot that I just put on there because I wanted to read them, not because I own them. And, also, there are a lot of Kindle Freebies.)

A Gathering Tempest: A Broken Tides Prequel by Catherine Jones Payne

This was a Kindle freebie. (It looks like it's still free.) I'm kinda on the fence with this one, but I think I'm gonna go ahead and keep it. It's been a while since I've read a mermaid story and this sounds interesting. And, also, since it's a short story, it won't take me too long to read it when I do get around to it.

VERDICT: Keep It

This is a definite keeper. This is a series I've been wanting to read for a while and I have no good excuse for why I haven't yet.

VERDICT: Keep It

This was another Kindle freebie. And, while I feel kinda bad doing this, I'm tossing it. It doesn't sound bad, but it's just not one I see myself reading anytime soon.

VERDICT: Toss It

This collection has an interesting premise and some really great authors, so I'm keeping it.

VERDICT: Keep It

This is another Kindle freebie. I'm kinda on the fence about it, but I think I'm gonna reluctantly toss it. My TBR list is just too big.

VERDICT: Toss It

Well, I did better this time. I got two books off of my TBR list. It's not a lot, but at least it's better than nothing.

What Andi had said was correct. No one should know they were here. They'd covered all their tracks. Their cellphones were untraceable. They weren't in their normal vehicles.
So how would someone know they were in Anchorage?

And when he sends her an online message, he's surprised she responds. Before long they are chatting every day, and once they start meeting in person, a spark-filled friendship begins.

But both of them are keeping secrets. Big ones. When all truths are revealed in one pivotal moment, Britt and Hunter are at a crossroads. Will he fight for the happiness he's worked so hard to obtain? And will she continue to hide from life, or can she finally step out of her own shadow?

As traitor after so-called traitor is revealed to be on their side, they begin to wonder: Could Warsafe’s mission be critical enough to justify its cruelty?

Review: Cornered: Three Romantic Suspense Novellas by Lynette Eason, Lynn H. Blackburn, & Natalie Walters

About the Book
Prepare for three times the thrills with these nail-biting page-turners from your favorite romantic suspense authors!

In In the Dark by Lynette Eason, accountant Steph Cross is cleaning out a coworker's desk after her untimely death when she finds cryptic notes that lead her to believe her friend's car accident was no accident at all. Detective Tate Cooper is determined to help her crack the case before someone else gets hurt. But can he protect the woman who has so quickly laid claim to his heart?

In Downfall by Lynn H. Blackburn, chef Cassie Quinn gets an offer she can't refuse: to fill in as chef at an exclusive mountain resort. But when the kitchen is destroyed and it becomes clear Cassie is in danger, she's forced to accept the help of her ex-boyfriend, Detective Donovan Bledsoe, to find the culprit and keep her safe.

In Perilous Obsession by Natalie Walters, teacher Lahela Young becomes the target of someone with a twisted obsession of righting a wrong. The first person she turns to is her good friend Briggs Turner. Briggs may have left his career as a police officer, but he still has the instinct to protect--especially for Lahela.

MY THOUGHTS

This fantastic collection features fast-paced and exciting stories from three of my favorite suspense authors. Sometimes novellas can feel rushed and leave me unsatisfied, but that was not the case here. These stories were jam-packed full of everything I love in a romantic suspense. I loved all three of them.

In the Dark by Lynette Eason
I was hooked from the very first page. I liked Steph and Tate together. They had great chemistry right from the start, and I enjoyed watching them work together to try and solve the mystery surrounding her friend’s murder. There was so much intrigue! I couldn’t read fast enough. I could hardly catch my breath during the climactic ending. And that twist left me reeling! So good!

Downfall by Lynn H. Blackburn
This story was suspenseful and full of danger. I was really rooting for Cassie and Donovan to work through their issues because they were so good for each other. I thought Cassie’s dislike of confrontation was relatable, especially after what had happened to her. I loved to see so much character growth packed into this novella. I also thought that the Hatfield and McCoy-esque feud added a really interesting aspect to the story.

Perilous Obsession by Natalie Walters

This was an intense and action-packed story that gripped me from the very beginning and didn’t let go until the very end. I instantly liked Lahela and Briggs and was eager to see them go from friends to more. They had amazing chemistry! The danger started off kinda slow, but it kept ramping up until I could hardly catch my breath. I was so worried for Lahela. There was one point near the end where I could hardly read fast enough. My anxiety was at an all-time high. There were a couple of moments that sent chills down my spine.

If you're looking for edge-of-your-seat, heart-pounding romantic suspense, grab a copy of this book! You won't be disappointed. Even though these stories are connected to the authors’ series, they standalone perfectly fine.

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.
