Review: The Dos and Don'ts of Dating a Doppelgänger: A Sweet Romantic Comedy by Kari Monet

About the Book (From Amazon)
It was love at first click . . . until she found out who his late wife was.

Ava would never move to a small town just because she met someone online—except she kinda did. The first surprise is that she shares a workplace with her mystery man, Tanner, and the chemistry is just as strong as their online friendship was. But the biggest shock is that Ava's the mirror image of Maggie St. Giles, who died five years ago. And this might be a problem for Tanner, who was married to her.

Of course, everyone in the small town of Caterwaul has an opinion about how Tanner and Ava should proceed, and their hilarious matchmaking efforts create a whirlwind of emotions for the couple to navigate. Will Ava be able to put down roots in a place where people still sometimes mistake her for her doppelgänger, Maggie? Will Tanner get over the sensation of dating a ghost?

This friends-to-lovers romantic comedy features a full cast of charming eccentrics, and celebrates the power of love to heal old wounds.

MY THOUGHTS

I really enjoyed this sweet romance. There were plenty of laughs, a lot of heart, and even some tears.

Ava and Tanner were great characters. They were so genuine and real, and their banter was so much fun. Things got complicated pretty fast, though, when they met face-to-face. What are the odds that Ava looks exactly like Tanner's deceased wife? What a surprise! I didn't know how a relationship between them would work, but I was rooting for them. I liked that there were chapters from both of their perspectives. And I also loved that there were even some chapters with POVs from other characters around town.

Speaking of the town, I loved Caterwaul and all of its nosy residents. I also thought the rivalry between them and their neighboring city of Canaan was pretty fun too.

I liked the whole concept of the TrueVoice app. No pictures, no videos. It was just voice recordings, which I thought was a neat way to get to know someone.

While there were a lot of laughs and humorous situations, this book also dealt with some serious topics—addiction, in particular. I thought it was handled well and appreciated the spotlight on such an important topic.

This was the first book I've read by this author, and I look forward to more! I recommend it to readers who enjoy sweet romances with humor and depth.

I received an advanced copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

  1. Small town romances are so fun. And the fact that she looks so much like his first wife? That's a new one. :D
